In this context, the Brain Storming Session focused on the current trends in aquatic ecosystem conservation, restoration and management including the hydrological and the biophysical aspects, peoples’ participation and the role of non-governmental, educational and governmental organisations and future research needs for the restoration, conservation and management. It was acknowledged that most of urban wetlands are seriously threatened by conversion to non wetland purposes, encroachment of drainage, through landfill, pollution (discharge of domestic and industrial effluents, disposal of solid wastes), hydrological alterations (water withdrawal and inflow changes), and over-exploitation of their natural resources resulting in loss of biodiversity and disruption in goods and services provided by wetlands. This report compiles the strategies for conservation and sustainable management of urban wetlands based on the discussions during the Brain storming session (26th September 2009) and recommendations of Lake Symposiums (Lake 2008, Lake 2006, Lake 2004, Lake 2002, LimGIS 2001, Lake 2000, 1998 symposium). Annexure II documents the draft notification of the Regulatory Framework for Wetlands Conservation of The Ministry of Environment and Forests, Government of India apart from various legal instruments that are relevant for the conservation and management of wetland ecosystems. E-mail: Abstract: Quantification of butterfly diversity and species richness is of prime importance for evaluating the status of protected areas. Permanent line transect counts were used to record species richness and abundance of butterfly communities of different habitat types in Trishna wildlife sanctuary. A total of 1005 individuals representing 59 species in 48 genera belonging to five families were recorded in the present study. Of these, 23 species belonged to the family Nymphalidae and accounted for 38.98% of the total species and 45.20% of the total number of individuals. Mature secondary mixed moist deciduous forest showed the maximum diversity and species richness, while exotic grassland showed minimum diversity and species richness. Out of 59 species, 31 are new records for Tripura state, while 21 are unique species and nine are listed in the threatened category. This study revealed that mature secondary forests are more important for butterfly communities, while exotic grasslands have a negative impact on species composition. Webb1* Abstract. Habitat loss and urbanisation in the tropics have been recognised as major drivers of species extinctions. Concurrently, novel habitats such as urban parks have been shown to be important as habitats and stepping stones in urban ecosystems around the world. However, few studies have assessed long-term patterns of species extinctions and discoveries in response to these drivers in the tropics. We know little about long-term persistence and utility of novel habitats in tropical urban ecosystems. In this study, we produced an updated and exhaustive butterfy checklist of species recorded from Singapore till December 2017 to investigate trends in butterfy extirpations (local extinctions), discoveries (new country records) and rediscoveries and how these relate to land use change in 28 years (1990–2017) in Singapore. Up to 144 butterfy species were identifed to be extirpated in Singapore by 1990. From 1990–2017, an additional nine butterfy extirpations have potentially occurred, which suggests a maximum of 153 butterfy extirpations to date. The rate of extirpations between 1990 to 2017 (< 0.33 extirpations per year) was much lower than the rate of extirpations between 1926 to 1989 (> 1.52 extirpations per year). The majority of potentially extirpated butterfies between 1990 to 2017 were species restricted to mature forests.

Lethe sura (DOUBLEDAY, 1849) and L. dura (MARSHAll, 1882), belonging to the subgenus Zophoessa DOUBLEDAY, 1849, Satyrinae, are superficially similar species known from the oriental region. The range of Lethe dura (MAR- SHAll) is from Sikkim eastwards to S. China, including Taiwan, with five known subspecies as following,L. dura gam- miei (MOORE, 1892) from Bhutan, Sikkim and NE. India, L. dura dura (MARSHAll) from W. Yunnan, Myanmar and Thailand, L. dura mansonia FRUHSTORFER, 1911 from Laos and Vietnam, L. dura neoclides FRUHSTORFER, 1909 from Taiwan and L. dura moupinensis (POUJADE, 1884) from SE. to W. China. Comparatively, the range of L. sura (DBLD.) is somewhat restricted with only the typical form known from C. Nepal eastwards to N. Indo-China. According to TALBOT (1947) and MONASTYRSKII (2005), L. sura (DBLD.) is also collected from W. China. TALBOT (1947) mentioned L. sura (DOUBLEDAY) from W. China and noted that “The species occurs also in Western China, where it appears to form another subspecies”. MONASTYRSKII (per. comm.) has examined a specimen from Tien-Tsuen (Tianquan, Sichuan) which is deposited in the Natural History Museum, London and according to him, it is much smaller than the typical form of L.

Accepted 21 October, 2009 We examine the hypothesis, whether the diversity of Nymphalid butterflies in primary forest is related to vegetation structure and canopy openness and that this relationship differs between butterfly taxa in relation to phylogenetic differences in light and shade preferences. The study also examines whether the increasing diversity of butterflies in degraded tropical forest is associated with the loss of species with restricted geographical distribution. Present study has considered eight habitat parameters for habitat data collections and the t-test using equal variance, spearman rank correlation and multiple regressions were used for statistical analyses. Species diversity was analyzed using Margalef’s D indices that indicate both the species richness and abundance. Bootstrap method was used to compare the diversity among samples. PCA was carried out to examine the relationship between vegetation structure and species diversity in primary and degraded forest. The relationship between vegetation factor scores and species diversity at each sampling station in primary and degraded forest was analyzed using stepwise multiple regression. Results indicates that the butterflies species sampled in closed canopy forest had more restricted geographical distribution than those being sampled in disturbed forest. The species with greater light preference had significantly wider geographical distribution, whereas, the species with greater shade preferences had significantly narrower geographical distributions.

The total land area of the islands is about 8,293 sq km with a coastline of 1,962 km.

A total of 421 butterfly species were recorded during the survey, including two species new to India (Gonepteryx amintha thibetana and Bhutanitis ludlowi) and several species rediscoveries and range extensions in the Eastern Himalaya, most notably Arhopala belphoebe, Sovia separata magna, Aulocera saraswati vishnu, Calinaga aborica, Callerebia annada annada, and Callerebria scanda opima. Here we provide an annotated checklist of butterflies of the Kameng Protected Area Complex, including historical records, distributions, abundance, habitats and other notes on these 421 species. An additional 42 species recorded in older literature or by other authors in recent times are also listed, taking the total number of species recorded in the landscape to 463.

E-mail: [email protected] Abstract Results of the odonatological survey of the coastal SW regions of Cambodia on No- vember 28 - December 11, 2001, are presented, including field notes, enumeration of all records by locality, discussion of interesting specimens and their taxonomy and of seasonality aspects. Fifteen (14 named) species have been added to the known fauna of Cambodia: Aristocypha fenestrella (Rambur, 1842), Rhinagrion viridatum Fraser, 1938, Lestes elatus Hagen in Selys, 1862, L. platystylus Rambur, 1842, Aci- agrion tillyardi Laidlaw, 1919, Agriocnemis f. femina (Brauer, 1868), Archibasis viola Lieftinck, Ceriagrion calamineum Laidlaw, 1951, Mortonagrion aborense (Laidlaw, 1914), M. falcatum Lieftinck, 1934, Pseudagrion microcephalum (Rambur, 1842), 1948, Paragomphus capricornis (Förster, 1914), Hemicordulia undescr. spec., Macro- diplax cora (Brauer, 1867), Nannophya pygmaea Rambur, 1842, plus a provisionally identified Ceriagrion indochinense Asahina, 1976. The country list now achieves 106 named species (not counting Prodasineura verticalis sensu Asahina, 1983, C. indo- chinense and Hemicordulia sp.). Coeliccia megumii Asahina, 1984 is synonymised with C. kazukoae Asahina, 1984. The differences between Ceriagrion olivaceum Laid- law, 1914 and C. calamineum Lieftinck, 1951 are discussed. Introduction In April 2010, I studied the Cardamon foothills in SW Cambodia for their Odonata (Kosterin 2010). We included 77 representative genera from the satyrine clade sensu( Wahlberg et al., 2003) as represented in Ackery et al. s (1999) classification for Charaxinae and Amathusiini, Lamas (2004) s for Morphini and Brassolini, including all major lineages in Satyrinae found in our previous paper (Peña et al., 2006), and two outgroup genera (Libythea and Danaus). All sequences have been deposited in GenBank. Appendix S1 shows the sampled species in their current taxonomic classification and GenBank accession numbers. 2. DNA isolation. We extracted DNA from two butterfly legs, dried or freshly conserved in 96% alcohol and kept at -80C until DNA extraction. Total DNA was isolated using QIAGEN s DNeasy extraction kit (Hilden, Germany) following the manufacturer s instructions. 3. PCR amplification. For each species, we amplified five nuclear genes and one mitochondrial gene by PCR using published primers (Table S1). Amplification was performed in 20 µL volume PCR reactions: 12.5 µL distilled water, 2.0 µL 10x buffer, 2.0 µL MgCl, 1.0 µL of each primer, 0.4 µL dNTP, 0.1 µL of AmpliTaq Gold polymerase and 1.0 µL of DNA extract. The reaction cycle profile consisted in a denaturation phase at 95C for 5 min, followed by 35 cycles of denaturation at 94C for 30s, annealing at 47 55C (depending on primers) for 30s, 72C for 1 min 30s, and a final extension period of 72C for 10 min. 4.
