Music Librarian Job Summary - The Stockton Symphony (SSA) seeks a part-time Music Librarian to participate in all orchestra library functions under the direction and supervision of Music Director and Executive Director. Functions include but are not limited to: acquisition and preparation of music for rehearsals and performances; supplying music for all SSA functions, cataloging music, and serving as a source of musical reference and assistance to members of the SSA and its staff. Beginning date July 1, 2018. Responsibilities: Music Procurement and Preparation Ordering Music for purchase and rental. Returning rental music as required by rental company. Prepare each concert series. Review all music to determine if orchestra parts meet acceptable standards and correct problems that could potentially disrupt rehearsals. Assemble and arrange music in orchestra folders. Place bowings in parts as provided by Music Director and/or Section Principals. Place markings in parts as provided by Music Director. Research “Errata” and make changes in parts as required. Provide parts to all musicians for pre-rehearsal practice. Ensure that rehearsal letter/numbers and measure numbers are compatible between conductors’ scores and players’ parts. Generate and submit reports to ASCAP, BMI, and any other licensing organization. Concert/Rehearsal Duties Arrive early for rehearsals and concerts to execute stage set-up and address any needs. Set conductor’s scores and batons; collect and store all scores at conclusion of service. Distribute and collect music at concerts and rehearsals. Follows up with the conductor and string principals at every rehearsal for any changes or corrections. Orchestra Library Maintenance Catalogue and file all music in the orchestra library and maintain accurate inventory. Maintain the orchestra’s collection of scores and parts; repair and maintain music and folders. Disassemble concert folders, properly filing SSA music and returning non-SSA materials in a timely manner. Track all items borrowed from the library and ensure their timely return. Track and submits all financial items. Research seasonal music costs, rental and purchase, and generate music budget projections. Requirements: College Degree in music or equivalent musical knowledge. Knowledge of orchestral repertoire, music theory, foreign terms, musical terms/signs, transposition and notation. Excellent computer skills including working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite. Experience with music notation software. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge of U.S. copyright laws. Ability to provide leadership and supervision as needed to musicians and staff. Excellent communication skills and the ability to interact effectively and productively with the Music Director, guest conductors, musicians, stage crew and staff. Excellent organizational skills and attention to details. Ability to work independently with good time management and multi-tasking skills. Ability to work well under pressure. Ability to regularly lift and move boxes of music. Must be able to work evenings and weekends.
