TUESDAY, MAY TWENTIETH, TWO THOUSAND AND EIGHT Monmouth University was founded in 1933 as the Central Jersey Shore’s first center of higher education. Its beginning was attended by an outpouring of support from the state’s educational community and great expectations of good. Now in the year 2008, as Monmouth University celebrates its Diamond Jubilee and looks back proudly on 75 years of excellence in higher education, the future is bright, indeed.
Today, well launched into its second half century, Monmouth has fulfilled its early expectations. From a two-year junior college conducting classes in borrowed quarters, Monmouth grew to achieve university status in 1995. The University’s 156-acre campus in suburban West Long Branch connects Monmouth with New Jersey’s historic past. Woodrow Wilson Hall, the University’s administrative center, is a National Historic Landmark, and the Guggenheim building, a wing of the Monmouth University Library, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Monmouth University serves an enrollment of more than 6,000 undergraduate and graduate students—a richly diverse group that comes from a number of states other than New Jersey and from 30 foreign nations. The student body includes traditional-age students, young professionals pursuing advanced studies, and mature men and women resuming studies in preparation for a career change or for personal enrichment. Within Monmouth’s six schools—the School of Business Administration, the Wayne D. McMurray School of Humanities and Social Sciences, the School of Education, the School of Science, Technology, and Engineering, the Marjorie K. Unterberg School of Nursing and Health Studies, and the Graduate School—students have a choice of 49 undergraduate and graduate degree programs. At Monmouth, students participate in more than 65 extracurricular organizations and special interest activities, in addition to an NCAA Division I Athletics program, which fields 19 men’s and women’s teams. 3 HONORARY DEGREES ROBERT KLEIN Doctor of Humanities, honoris causa

A self-described amorous busboy and child of the 1950s, award-winning comedian and actor Robert Klein is a pioneer of observational humor. His razor-sharp routines helped define what we know today as stand-up comedy. And, Klein continues to have an acclaimed career in comedy on Broadway, on television, and in film.
In his memoir, The Amorous Busboy of Decatur Avenue, he unravels an affectionate tale of growing up before embarking on a show business career. With wry wit and frank honesty, Klein recounts the journey from his parents’ small Bronx apartment, to developing his comedic talent in Chicago with the famed Second City troupe, as well as the beginning of his show business stardom.
According to Klein, while writing the book, he was surprised at how unsure he was of himself when he was younger—how afraid he was of risk and rejection, how intensely he felt things, both large and small. Klein claims this intensity is one of the mixed blessings of youth. “Mellowing, it seems, is one of the meager compensatory blessing of being old,” he said.
Fortunately for his audiences, Klein was not a mellow young man. It is difficult to overestimate how fresh and unexpected Klein’s comedy was when he first appeared on television. Brash, intelligent, and edgy without being confrontational, Klein provided a role model for a generation of comedians that followed him including: Richard Belzer, Billy Crystal, Richard Lewis, and Jerry Seinfeld. Klein’s first album, Child of the 50’s, became a handbook of sorts for the comedically inclined who were following in his footsteps.
Robert Klein attended one year of graduate school at the Yale School of Drama (1962–1963), but left because he thought he could make it as an actor in theater in New York City. That did not happen quite so quickly, but he then successfully auditioned for Second City and spent fourteen crucial months learning and performing in Chicago, before returning to New York and a role in Mike Nichol’s musical, The Apple Tree.
After the curtain fell on Broadway each night, Klein would rush to the Improvisation, the pioneering comedy club on West 44th Street, where he would absorb the master class in comedy being conducted there by Rodney Dangerfield. Dangerfield saw potential in the young Klein and took the eager would-be comic under his wing, helping to find him management and to launch his career with a Tonight Show appearance in 1968.
By 1975, when the first of Klein’s many HBO concerts aired, Robert Klein was a comic king. He appeared on variety and talk shows, found acclaim as an actor, and recorded many comedy albums. Klein’s first HBO appearance was also a first for HBO: its first live comedy concert, which set new benchmarks for audacity and language, demonstrating that the sparks that are struck during live performance can be felt through the medium of television.
Robert Klein was nominated twice for Grammy Awards for best comedy album of the year for his albums Child of the 50’s and Mind Over Matter.
He received a Tony Award nomination for best actor and won a Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle Award for his performance in the hit Neil Simon musical, They’re Playing Our Song. In 1993, Klein won an Obie and the Outer Critics Circle Award for Outstanding Performance by an Actor in Wendy Wasserstein’s, The Sisters Rosensweig.
Klein has had many starring roles in television. He co-starred in the hit NBC series, Sisters, and regularly appears on talk-shows, making more than 100 appearances on The Tonight Show and The Late Show with David Letterman.
Robert Klein has also appeared in many notable films including, Hooper, The Owl and the Pussycat, Primary Colors, People I Know, Two Weeks Notice, and How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days.
He obtained his Bachelor of Arts degree in history and political science in 1962 from Alfred University and also received a Doctor of Humane Letters from Alfred University in 1979.
According to Jerry Seinfeld, “Robert Klein has always been the funniest, most intelligent, coolest comedian. If he would also like to be known as an amorous busboy, who am I to stand in his way?”
4 JUDITH K. BRODSKY Doctor of Fine Arts, honoris causa

As a working artist and champion of the arts, particularly women in the arts, Judith K. Brodsky has organized and curated numerous exhibitions and written extensively about women artists.
A renowned printmaker and artist in her own right, Brodsky’s work is in the permanent collections of over 100 museums and corporations such as the Library of Congress; the Victoria and Albert Museum, London; the Stadtsmuseum, Berlin; the Grunwald Center for the Graphic Arts, University of California at Los Angeles; the Rhode Island School of Design Museum; the New Jersey State Museum; and the Fogg Museum at Harvard.
Brodsky has also contributed to the first comprehensive history of the American women’s movement in art, called The Power of Feminist Art, published in 1994. A recent exhibition she organized, called 100 New Jersey Artists Make Prints, traveled throughout the United States, Europe, the Middle East, and Africa.
A current curatorial project for Brodsky is the organization of the twenty-fifth anniversary exhibition of the Brodsky Center, an innovative print and papermaking center she founded at Rutgers University, which is scheduled to open at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, in 2011.
Very active in policy-making positions in the art world, Brodsky presently serves on the boards of ArtPride/New Jersey, Jersey City Museum, International Print Center New York, the New York Foundation for the Arts, and Philagrafika, an international fine art print exposition that will take place in Philadelphia in 2010. Focused around the printed image as central to contemporary artmaking, this exposition will feature the work of over 100 internationally known artists. Brodsky is also co-coordinator of the Feminist Art Project, a national program to celebrate the contributions of feminist artists to contemporary art practice.
In her own prints and drawings, Brodsky works with an early twenty-first century iconography, reflecting the intellectual, political, and social issues of our time as filtered through her own individuality. Her images of the environment, women, and family become metaphors for her feelings about life, decay, death, and possible salvation.
Brodsky’s most recent body of work is an installation titled Memoir of an Assimilated Family, consisting of approximately 100 etchings based on old family photographs.
The daughter of two teachers, Brodsky is a Rhode Island native, and classes at the Rhode Island School of Design nurtured her early interest in art. She has been a Princeton resident since 1955 and is professor emeriti in the Department of Visual Arts at Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University. Active throughout her career in the women’s movement, she is a past national president of ArtTable, an organization of 1,200 women in leadership positions in the visual arts.
Professor Brodsky is a frequent lecturer throughout the United States and abroad including international venues such as the Academy of Fine Arts, Beijing; the Academy of Fine Arts, Berlin; and the Royal Academy, Edinburgh. She is also frequently invited to be on panels for selection of artists to receive fellowships or for university department external reviews.
She received her BA degree, magna cum laude from Radcliffe College, Harvard University, where she was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. She received her MFA from Tyler School of Art, Temple University, in painting and printmaking.
5 MILTON GRAY CAMPBELL Doctor of Public Service, honoris causa

The term decathlon is Greek for “ten events.” Contested only by men, the decathlon consists of ten different competitions held over two days. On day one, athletes compete in the 100-meter dash, long jump, shot put, high jump, and 400-meter dash. Day two features the 110-meter hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin, and 1,500-meter running event.
In 1951, 16-year-old Plainfield High School student Milt Campbell had just had a life-changing conversation with his track coach. The coach told Campbell that to be the best athlete in the world, he had to win the decathlon at the Olympics. The only problem with that advice was that Milt Campbell had no idea what the decathlon was, but that didn’t stop him from wanting to win it.
Between his junior and senior years at Plainfield, Campbell nearly earned the title of best athlete when he won a silver medal at the 1952 Olympics in Helsinki, Finland. He recalls thinking at the time that in four years, he would win the gold medal. And he did just that in Melbourne, Australia, scoring 7,937 points, setting an Olympic record and becoming the first black athlete to win the decathlon.
In addition to his world-class athletic accomplishments, which included playing football for the Cleveland Browns and Montreal Alouettes, Campbell has been named by The Star-Ledger as the greatest athlete of the twentieth century, not only for his sports accomplishments, but also for the strength of his personal character.
And his personal character is as much admired as his athletic achievements. Campbell has dedicated his adult life to humanitarian and community service. He served as an advisor for the Model Cities Program in Newark, which offers tutorial and recreational activities for young people and adults. He was also a cofounder and fundraiser for the Chad School, an alternative school in Newark.
Campbell worked tirelessly to restore peace in Newark after the riots there in 1967. His message became “fighting is not the answer, but education is.” Campbell has succeeded at motivating students to make better choices in life and has instilled in many students an understanding that their lives are not only worthwhile, but precious.
Campbell is a motivation and personal development coach for major corporations including AT&T, IBM, and MetLife. He also devotes time to numerous DARE programs and the Scared Straight program to help deter young people away from drugs and crime.
THOMAS I. UNTERBERG Doctor of Laws, honoris causa

An active philanthropist and great supporter of theater arts in Monmouth County, as well as a long-standing supporter of Monmouth Medical Center, Thomas I. Unterberg is an extraordinary member of the Monmouth University community. He is a former trustee of the University and was instrumental in establishing the Marjorie K. Unterberg School of Nursing and Health Studies in honor of his mother.
A graduate of Princeton University and an MBA graduate of the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, Unterberg has been in the investment banking business since 1956. He is founder and senior advisor of Collins Stewart LLC (formerly C.E. Unterberg, Towbin), a boutique investment banking firm, and is widely respected as a supplier of capital to emerging technology companies. He was named by Redherring as one of the top 100 people responsible for the growth of Silicon Valley during its formative years.
He has served on the boards of such companies as AES Corporation, Lin Broadcasting, Thermal Electonic, Tandem Computers, Electronics for Imaging, and Systems and Computer Technology, and he has worked on the IPOs of companies including Intel, AES, Thermo Electric, Lin Broadcasting, Seagate, and Tandem Computers.
With his wife Ann Unterberg, a current trustee of Monmouth University, their philanthropic generosity helps support the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS), a leading worldwide conservation organization and parent to the New York City Zoos and Brooklyn Aquarium. They are also active supporters of Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts and the Unterberg Poetry Center at the 92nd Street YMHA in New York City, and the Two River Theater Company in Red Bank.
6 DISTINGUISHED TEACHER AWARD, 2008 RECIPIENT KELLY WARD, PhD
Professor Kelly Ward graduated with a Bachelor in Social Work from Eastern Michigan University, a Masters Degree in Social Work from Rutgers University, and her Doctorate degree in Social Work from Fordham University. Originally from Cleveland, Ohio, where she was the eldest daughter of six children born to Patricia and Francis Hughes, Dr. Ward settled in New Jersey where she met and married her husband Robert Ward, EdD. Prior to teaching, Dr. Ward was a practicing social worker primarily working with those who were addicted to drugs and alcohol. She is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and Licensed Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor who also has a small private practice here in Monmouth County.
Dr. Ward started as an adjunct at Monmouth University and is currently an Associate Professor and the BSW Program Director in the soon to be School of Social Work (July 1, 2008) as well as the Director of Experiential Education. Dr. Ward is passionate about social work and is committed to working with students so that they work with people to end socially unjust issues including but not limited to poverty, homelessness, human trafficking, drug trafficking, lack of health care, and unequal education, ultimately helping people achieve their human rights.
Dr. Ward’s current research interests include parents’ views of confidentiality when their adolescent seeks mental health treatment, and she has just completed co-editing a book on forensic social work. She enjoys kayaking, hiking, traveling, and loves her two cats Elliot and Whitman.
As Provost Thomas Pearson notes, “Professor Ward is certainly one of our finest teacher-scholar-practitioners on campus. She models the high standards of social work practice in her classes, treats her students as rising professionals in the field, and is a master at facilitating discussion and reflection within her classes on sensitive topics that draw upon the experiences of her students in the field. She inspires her students to learn and grow and, not surprisingly, many of them come back to visit and learn from her even after they graduate from Monmouth.”
Message to the Graduates from Dr. Kelly Ward
Congratulations on being conferred with your bachelor or master’s degree! I am humbled to be able to have this opportunity to address you on one of the most significant days in your life. Each and every one of you should be proud of your accomplishments. Did you know that only 29 percent of the people in the U.S. have a bachelor’s degree and only 6.9 percent have a master’s degree (http://www.census.gov/population/www/socdemo/education/cps2007.html)?
As you join these distinguished ranks, think about the journey that brought you here today. Think about the people you met, those who have walked alongside you on this adventure. Continue those bonds; they will always be an important part of who you are as a person. If I could offer only one word of advice, it would be this: be true to your inner self and follow your bliss. You know inside what your hopes and dreams are; those hopes and dreams are obtainable today.
Education is the key to obtaining those dreams; compassion is the key to sustaining the connections with other human beings. Wherever you go from here, always remember to give back to your community; civic engagement and volunteering are an important part of how you can share the knowledge learned while obtaining your degree.
Live life with open hearts and minds, work hard, laugh often, and hug generously—today and throughout your lives.

47 THE ACADEMIC PROCESSION AND REGALIA
For the benefit of our visitors’ the following information, digested from “An Academic Costume Code and Ceremony Guide” prepared by the American Council on Education, may prove helpful in identifying the costumes you will see in the Commencement procession.
The history of academic dress reaches far back into the earliest days of the oldest universities. A statute of 1321 required that all “Doctors, Licentiates, and Bachelors” of the University of Coimbra wear gowns. In England, in the second half of the fourteenth century, the statutes of certain colleges prescribed the wearing of a long gown. In the sixteenth and seventeeth centuries in Europe, the wearing of a robe often signified a degree candidate’s political or religious affiliation; in the northern universities and those of the British Isles, the robes signified that tuition and boarding fees of the wearer had been paid and also entitled him to special immunities in civil law—as well as providing him warmth at lectures and chapel.
When American colleges and universities desired to adopt some suitable system of academic apparel, a conference held at Columbia University in 1895, made up of representatives from various institutions, drew up a “By-Law, Regulation, or Statute” for the establishment of a suitable code of academic dress for colleges and universities in the United States. This code, with modifications made in 1959 by the Committee on Academic Costumes and Ceremonies of the American Council on Education, is still in force; the costumes and colors, trimmings, and patterns you will see are traditional, and interpret both the degree and field of learning. The bachelor’s gown, designed to be worn closed, has pointed sleeves; the master’s gown, which may be worn open or closed, has an oblong sleeve open at the wrist that hangs down in the traditional manner. The rear part of its oblong shape is square cut, and the front part has the arc cut away. The doctor’s gown has bell-shaped sleeves. It may be worn open or closed.
Black is the recommended color for all academic gowns. Bachelor’s and master’s gowns are untrimmed. Doctor’s gowns are faced with black velvet, with three bars across the sleeves, or the color of the velvet may be that which is distinctive to the degree, agreeing with that of the edging of the hood. In the 1960s, many American land-grant universities adopted the British and the Scottish tradition of using the official school color(s) for the robes of their doctoral recipients—for instance, Yale: sky blue; Harvard: crimson; University of Pennsylvania: scarlet and blue; Columbia: slate gray; Rutgers: deep red and black.
The colors you will see in the hoods of our faculty represent the various fields in which the degrees were taken:

The hoods, differing in length for the three degrees—bachelor’s, master’s, and doctor’s—are lined with the official colors of the university or college conferring the degree, usually with one color forming a chevron pattern over the other. Hoods are edged and bound with velvet or the color appropriate for the degree. You will see in our procession many hoods edged with dark blue, representing doctor of philosophy.
Mortarboards are the approved headgear. The tassel, worn on the left side of the cap, may be of gold if the holder has a doctor’s degree.
In the procession, first come the faculty members, then the candidates for degrees arranged in the order in which degrees are to be conferred, and finally, the speakers, trustees, administrative officers, candidates for honorary degrees, and other members of the platform party.
