  • Music and History in Italian Film Melodrama, 1940-2010
Between Soundtrack and Performance: Music and History in Italian Film Melodrama, 1940-2010 By Marina Romani A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Italian Studies and the Designated Emphasis in Film Studies in the Graduate Division of the University of California, Berkeley Committee in charge: Professor Barbara Spackman, Chair Professor Mary Ann Smart Professor Linda Williams Professor Mia Fuller Summer 2015 Abstract Between Soundtrack and Performance: Music and History in Italian Film Melodrama, 1940-2010 by Marina Romani Doctor of Philosophy in Italian Studies and the Designated Emphasis in Film Studies University of California, Berkeley Professor Barbara Spackman, Chair Melodrama manifests itself in a variety of forms – as a film and theatre practice, as a discursive category, as a mode of imagination. This dissertation discusses film melodrama in its visual, gestural, and aural manifestations. My focus is on the persistence of melodrama and the traces it leaves on post-World War II Italian cinema: from the Neorealist canon of the 1940s to works that engage with the psychological and physical, private, and collective traumas after the experience of a totalitarian regime (Cavani’s Il portiere di notte, 1974), to postmodern Viscontian experiments set in a 21st-century capitalist society (Guadagnino’s Io sono l’amore, 2009). The aural dimension is fundamental as an opening to the epistemology of each film. I pay particular attention to the presence of operatic music – as evoked directly or through semiotic displacement involving the film’s aesthetic and expressive figures – and I acknowledge the existence of a long legacy of practical and imaginative influences, infiltrations and borrowings between the screen and the operatic stage in the Italian cinematographic tradition.

HART William S. Hart came to the movies in 1914 from a long line of theatrical ex perience, mostly Shakespearean and while to many he is the strong, silent Western hero of film he is also the peer of John Ford as a major force in shaping and developing this genre we enjoy, the Western. In 1889 in what is to become Oklahoma Territory the Cherokee Strip is just a graz ing area owned by Indians and worked day and night be the itinerant cowboys called 'tumbleweeds'. Alas, it is the end of the old West as the homesteaders are moving in . Hart becomes involved with a homesteader's daughter and her evil brother who has a scheme to jump the line as "sooners". The scenes of the gigantic land rush is one of the most noted action sequences in film history.

  • Stanlio & Ollio
The purple moment [1928], Should married man go home? [1928], Chickens come home [1931]).

  • The Definitive Restorations
LAUREL & HARDY — THE DEFINITIVE RESTORATIONS Reported by Tracy M. Tolzmann The noted author, film conservator, historian, and Block-Heads tent Grand Sheik Emeritus Richard W. Bann has just announced the upcoming release of 19 Laurel and Hardy comedies that have been meticulously restored by Jeff Joseph/SabuCat in conjunction with the UCLA Film and Television Archive and the Library of Congress. Using careful photochemical and digital techniques, these classic films have been restored to pristine condition. In these stunning new transfers, the films look and sound as beautiful as they did when they were first released. Stan and Ollie look and sound great in the new 2K and 4K digital restorations made from the original 35mm nitrate films. Laurel and Hardy's classic comedies are presented here in the best quality since their first release over 75 years ago! The release contains two features and 17 shorts, including the legendary pie-fight silent film THE BATTLE OF THE CENTURY, making its video debut and nearly complete for the first time in over 90 years! The DVD is packed with Bonus Materials: • Commentaries by Randy Skretvedt and Richard W. Bann • Never before seen video and audio interviews with L&H co-workers • Over 2,500 rare photos, posters, scripts and studio files • Alternate Soundtracks and Music Tracks • "Ship's Reporter" Interview of Oliver Hardy (restored) • THAT’S THAT (restored/first time on video — gag reel to honor Stan’s birthday) • THE TREE IN A TEST TUBE (restored from 16mm color Kodachrome) • L&H off-screen pictures from
