Each “piece” appears almost exactly as it was published originally. Only obvious typographical errors have been corrected and a modest effort was made render consistent some of the stylistic differences that exist between transliterations in earlier and later issues of Hamaayan. (In addition, some references to Torah scholars who were living when their words originally appeared have unfortunately had to be changed to reflect the fact of their passing.) This work would not have been possible without the help of several people (in addition to the sponsors and the other supporters of Hamaayan).

  • Agudath Israel 2016 Yerushalayim Yarchei Kallah Report,PHOTOS
Agudath Israel 2016 Yerushalayim Yarchei Kallah Report January 18, 2016 The Torah communities of the United States and Eretz Yisroel derived a boost of ruchniyus and mutual chizuk last week, during the annual Agudath Israel of America Yarchei Kallah in Yerushalayim. For the 16th consecutive year, a large group of businessmen and professionals, from North America and beyond, many accompanied by their wives, spent a full week – from Monday through Thursday – in Yerushalayim, learning Torah the entire day. The banquet hall at the Ramada Hotel was turned into a vibrant Bais Medrash, with a kol Torah and pilpul chaverim that you would expect to find in a prestigious yeshiva or kollel. Even with the pace of life seeming to speed up, and the security situation perennially volatile, the Yarchei Kallah’s show of force on behalf of Torah learning and the bnei Eretz Yisroel only intensifies each year. The 2016 Yarchei Kallah drew close to 225 men and 75 women. Not only does the number of participants increase each year, but the diversity does too. There are participants from every major community – American, European, Chassidish, Litvish, Sephardic – and an increasing number of younger and middle age professionals, including several father-and-son pairs. Day One “It is heartwarming to see the oilam…” With these words, Rabbi Asher Weiss, Av Beis Din of Darchei Hora’ah and Rosh Yeshiva of Yeshiva Darchei Torah, opened his shiur hakdamah on the sugya of the Yarchei Kallah: Tzitzis. Rabbi Weiss has delivered a shiur at the Yarchei Kallah since its inception, and feels a powerful kinship with the program’s participants.

YISMACH HILCHOS Jewish Laws SHIDDUCHIM R elating to Shidduchim Compliled by Rafi Newman o n be half of Yismach PART 1: Halochos of Shidduchim Chapter 1 The Shidduch Process Why Marry The basic principle is that it is a mitzvah to marry and have children. On a more spiritual level, the Tomer Devorah says1 that a man’s primary attachment to the schechina is through his wife. If a person wants to attain any lofty state, he must get married. Marriage isn’t exclusively about having children, but rather a man is also commanded to love his wife. Love in marriage is crucial not only because a house that has shalom brings the shechina, but also because having a loving marriage leads to the birth of extraordinary Tzadikim2 Do I need to actively look for a Shidduch? Does this Hishtadlus conflict with Bitachon? Some people, especially yeshiva buchrim do not approach shadchanim, but rather wait to hear a suggestion. They feel that trying contradicts their bitachon. Some specifically quote the Gra who says that the efforts people make to find a zivug is in vain, because everything is from Hashem. However R’ Shlomo Zalman Auerbach corrects this misinterpretation of the Gra and states : “Even though Hashem makes shidduchim, one must still do hishtadlus, though less than one would do for one’s other needs.” In the same vain the Chazon Ish states: "We need to remember that it is not in our power to do anything: Only by our actions do we arouse the gates of mercy that our actions should accomplish its goal.

  • Vnei Banim: Generations Dedicated to Torah at Agudath Israel’
Photos/Video: Banim U’vnei Banim: Generations Dedicated to Torah at Agudath Israel’s 18th Annual Yerushalayim Yarchei Kallah January 23, 2018 By all accounts, this year’s Agudath Israel of American’s Torah Projects Commission’s annual Yerushalayim Yarchei Kallah was one for the history books, with more than 500 participants spanning five continents, 30 cities and several groups that spanned two and even three generations. Now in its 18th year, the Yarchei Kallah delved into Sugyos throughout Shas that deal with refuah and pikuach nefesh, a topic that had attendees alternately transfixed and engaged in animated debate. This was indicative of an extremely high level of intensity on display throughout the week-long event which also attracted many additional participants who flocked to the Ramada Jerusalem Hotel to take part in the program. Known for attracting top magidei shiur and rabbonim, the Yarchei Kallah participants themselves represented a veritable universe of talmidei chachamim. The group spanned decades in age and represented every segment of the Jewish community, with some earning their livelihood in klei kodesh with others successful professionals and businessmen. All were united by a burning desire to devote themselves exclusively to four solid days of limud. Monday [wonderplugin_gallery id=”159″] “The concentration here was unbelievable,” said Rabbi Labish Becker, executive director for Agudath Israel of America. “Normally everyone is always busy but here you didn’t even hear a phone ring. Walking through the room and around the tables no one even looked up at you because they were all so focused on their learning.” The Sugya D’Kallah lent itself to countless fascinating discussions as a wide variety of questions arose that addressed dozens of different medical scenarios that impact daily life as well as emergency situations.

Leib Scheinbaum Parashat Shemot Come let us outsmart it lest it become numerous....and it too, may join our enemies. (1:10) Chazal tell us that Pharaoh had a council composed of three advisors, Bilaam, Iyov, and Yisro. Bilaam was the one who suggested the diabolical scheme to enslave the Jews. Iyov remained silent; he was later punished for his silence with ordeals of terrible pain and anguish. Yisro fled Egypt, rather than acquiesce to the evil advice. He was rewarded with the promise that his descendants would one day sit in the Sanhedrin. This well-known Midrash assumes a new meaning when one considers the nature of each of the three advisors and the inconsistency of their advice with his own personal character. Bilaam was as arrogant and egotistical as he was evil. He had the power to curse entire nations. He could cast anyone under his evil spell. Why did he fear the Jews to the point that he initiated the scheme to destroy them? Iyov, a pacifist, was the symbol of loving-kindness and human decency. He could not tolerate evil; he would never turn his back on oppression. Yet, what did he do when the tragic decree to enslave an entire nation was made? He remained silent! Is that consistent with his nature? Is this the response we would expect from a man of his noble stature? Is silence the type of reaction one would expect from a man whose life was dedicated to humane causes? How could he tolerate the screams of the Jewish infants as they were cast in the river? Yisro, the great philosopher, epitomized justice and truth.
