Greg Wyatt, NSS Falling Icarus Sculptor Agrigento Archeological Museum Agrigento, Sicily GregProfile Wyatt Bronze - 9 feet tall Greg Wyatt, NSS ou are the Sculptor-in-Residence at St. John the Divine and most recently you were appointed a duplex studio at the YNational Arts Club in Gramercy Park. What exactly do those honors mean? I was appointed the third sculptor-in-residence by the Dean of the Ca- thedral Church of St. John the Divine, the Very Rev. James Parks Mor- ton, in early 1982. Soon after receiving my appointment letter, the Dean opened the large wooden door to the historic sculpture studio below the Chapel of St. James. Over these twenty eight years, within the Cathedral crypt, it is where I have created most of my career bronze monuments. Since its first cornerstone was placed in 1892, each of the Cathedral’s commissioned sculptors have contributed special permanent works for its sacred architecture or within its protected grounds. For example, the magnificent twelve figures executed in the top niches of the turrets and but- tresses are carved stone statues of the Apostles by early 20th century sculp- tor Gutzon Borglum. Now my work hasthe honor of being among theirs. In 1983, I began creating the on-site enlargement model for my first Cathedral work, a public art monument entitled the “Peace Foun- tain”. On May 18th 1985, it was unveiled in the garden and placed permanently at the entranceway edge of the Cathedral Close. For a period of five years after the unveiling of the “Peace Fountain,” I oversaw the development and completion of 120 bronze works, created by NYC-Metro school children, which became permanent, integral parts of the “Peace Fountain.” Parallel to this commitment to art education, I have provided the opportunities for young sculptor apprenticeships

Two Rivers Duomo Museum Garden Opera Della Primaziale Pisana Leaning Tower of Pisa, Italy Bronze - 17 feet tall working side-by-side in the crypt studio as well as work/study grants. Greg Wyatt, NSS One of my preferred means is contributing to the Fantasy Fountain Fund which creates studio education scholarships and study-abroad funding for meritorious students of visual arts. Currently, the Fantasy Fountain Fund and the Modern Art Foundy of Queens are creating apprenticeship programs for high school and undergraduate students to learn within the foundry art technology and lost-wax bronze casting processes. You have created a good many public monuments all over the world. What is it about public sculpture and the process you enjoy? I enjoy the sustainability of public monuments, arising especially with the opportunities for creating “model-to-monument” design process- es which begin with questions of how best to address the perceived environmental deficiencies of a city or particular area of community. It is very exciting to succeed with activating and contributing last- ing improvements to urban and built environments. I have found it excellent professional practice to create any number of mid-size maquettes to make sure that sponsors and boards completely under- stand their communicated values. It is absolutely about the read- ability of proposal models, their expanded forms, and the well-un- derstood implications of full scale bronze monument commissioning. During my career I have placed many public monuments through- out the country. I enjoy working collaboratively with well-trained, experience and innovative professionals who similarly take on the challenges of contributing responsibly to the public square. Your father was an artist and taught painting at the City College of New York (CCNY). How did he influence your career? Novation Bardini Gardens I firmly believe in the art historical themes of “artists learning from artists”, Florence, Italy “family education” and “on-the-floor studio apprenticeship”. One of my ear- Bronze - 7 ft H x 4 ft. W liest recollections is being instructed in life drawing, watercolor and tempera Greg Wyatt, NSS painting by my father. An example I fondly recall is when I was ten years old I would travel daily with my father from Rockland County to the City College of New York to study drawing. While his summer term studio in- struction proceeded, I was placed in a neighboring workspace to draw from plaster casts, the human skeleton and to copy the reproductions old masters’ drawings. In succeeding summers, I would be introduced and encouraged by my father to practice the blind contour and sculpture massing drawing methods found in his recommended Kimon Nicolaides seminal book, “The Natural Way to Draw”. These and other drawing techniques were extremely influential for my interests with watercolor, and thus I came to the arts at a very early age of wonder and respect. Typical in some of your work are figures and fragments caught up in a spiraling vortex of energy. Please discuss. Many of the circular narrative works, both those ascending and descending, are benefited from influences of hidden and guiding spiral geometries within their “open air” compositions. Early in my career I made many drawings from nature that were premised on the careful observation of specific inter- locking patterns of form and growth. I became fascinated by Leonardo Da- Vinci’s drawings of natural specimens which unfold dynamically, exhibiting on-surface textural forces of expansion as with the master’s interweaving of plant-like forms and spaces. It seemed to me a good idea to explore further these patterns in wax and clay models with eventually the thought in mind to foster the public’s viewing of unfolding narrative events in bronze monumental scale. As invited viewers circle about the in-the-round works, perhaps I could supply underlying messages of deeper emotional and psychological connections helped along with upward spirals of dynamically expres- sive forms. Tell us about your solo exhibition “Two Rivers” which occurred in Florence, Italy in 2009. I have long been a student of the Renaissance figurative tradition and have had a connection to Florence since the first time I taught there in my mid-twenties. For many years, I have created overseas works of sculpture and exhibited them in Italy and throughout Europe. However, it was my longstanding bond with Florence which lead to a meeting with City of Florence representatives in 2007 who invited me to exhibit within the Sala d’Arme gallery of Palazzo Vecchio. For the next two years, almost forty works in bronze were assembled Two Sculptors and cast for the exhibition. Some collection works were on loan from Georgetown University Florence and environs while several other sculptures were cast in New Medical School York, Pietrasanta and Paris. It was at this time that I was informed that Washington, DC Bronze - 35” H my work, “Two Rivers” would be exhibited outside the Sala d’Arme Greg Wyatt, NSS in the Piazza della Signoria. The exhibition of “Two Rivers” and my exhibition of 36 sculptures within La Sala d’Arme di Palazzo Vecchio was on display for three months. This is an achievement of which I am very proud. In the months since the retrospective’s closing, almost all of the ex- hibited works have found permanent placement in many Tuscan public collections, including the sculpture courtyards of Museo Civico di San Gimignano; Comune di Stia, Arezzo; Masaccio Museum and several other noteworthy and historical sites. In June of this year, “Two Riv- ers” was placed permanently in the garden of the Museo Dell’Opera del Duomo and unveiled in a ceremony on the grounds of the Leaning Tower of Pisa. www.g-wyatt.com recent works

Tell us what you Ydid before and how your interest turned to sculpture. I still do what I did before, which is draw storyboards mostly for TV commercials. I learned to sculpt by accident really, sketching from sculptures all over London (like life models who never need to rest) and learning to draw anatomy from Edouard Lanteri sculpture books. It wasn’t until my wife, Meridee, and I moved to Santa Fe that I really decided to give sculpture a serious try. You couldn’t go anywhere without running into it at every turn. Before long I just had to buy a bunch of clay and get stuck in!
