Soloists with international careers, they are also founding members of the Trio Albatros Ensemble and the Quartetto DuePiùDue – two of the most interesting ensembles in the Italian and internatio- nal chamber scene – and boast collaborations with some of the most signifcant modern and contem- porary composers. Both have obtained several degrees in prestigious European musical and university institutions and have performed in important theatres and concert halls in Austria, Chile, China, Colombia, Croatia, Estonia, France, Hong- Kong, Italy, Peru, Romania, Russia, Slovenia, Spain, Switzerland, Turkey and United Kingdom, receiving enthusiastic praise from the public and the critics alike. Their repertoires span from eighteenth-century to contemporary music, with special attention to the nineteen- th-century repertoire and the discovery of unjustly neglected works and composers. Both of them are busy pedagogues and are currently teaching staf at the Conservatories “Niccolò Paganini” of Genoa and “Arcangelo Corelli” in Messina. They are the founders and organisers of the Festival-Masterclass “LeAltreNote”, an internatio- nal event that takes place in Valtellina (Italy). In 2015, which marked the fftieth anniversary of Giorgio Federico Ghedini’s death, Francesco and Stefano have given a series of concerts celebrating the composer and, together with the violin concerto (“Il belprato”) and the fute concerto (Sonata da concerto), have been privileged to perform Ghedini’s double concerto “dell’Alderina” for fute, violin and strings for the frst time in sixty fve years, since its frst and sole performance. Francesco and Stefano have collaborated as soloists with several orchestras: the ensembles of Aarad and Kosice, the Turin Philharmonic, the Orchestra of the Catanzaro Province, the Sicilian Symphony Orchestra, the “Armonici” Cham- ber Orchestra, the “Bartolomeo Bruni” Chamber Orchestra, the “Stesichoros” Chamber Orchestra, the San Remo Symphony, the Academic Orchestra of the St. Petersburg Philharmonic, the Symphonia of the London Royal Academy of Music, the Suisse-Italian Radio Orchestra, the “Arturo Toscanini” Symphony. They have made numerous world première recordings for the Stradivarius label as soloists (Friedrich Kuhlau, Saverio Mercadante, Henri Vieuxtemps), soloists with orchestra (Giorgio Federico Ghedini and Gian Francesco Malipiero), in duo with piano (Louis Spohr) and in trio (Bohuslav Martinů and Nino Rota). Another world première, the double CD containing the fute quartets by Giuseppe Maria Cambini (Quartetto DuePiùDue), has recently been released by Brilliant Classics and the same record label will soon release Leo Ornstein’s works for violin and piano as well as for fute and piano. Francesco plays on three beautiful violins: a Gaetano Gadda (circa 1930), a Giacomo & Leandro Bisiach (1962) and a Giuseppe & Antonio Gagliano (circa 1790-1805) that he has been generously lent by the heirs of the great conductor Gino Marinuzzi. He owns two precious bows made by Benoit Rolland and a 1930 Eugène Sartory he was given by an anonymous admi- rer. Stefano, beside being ambassador of AZUMI futes in Italy, is a Yamaha International Artist. He plays two precious Yamaha wooden and golden futes..

  • La Generazione Dell'ottanta and the Italian Sound
    LA GENERAZIONE DELL’OTTANTA AND THE ITALIAN SOUND A DISSERTATION IN Trumpet Performance Presented to the Faculty of the University of Missouri-Kansas City in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree DOCTOR OF MUSICAL ARTS by ALBERTO RACANATI M.M., Western Illinois University, 2016 B.A., Conservatorio Piccinni, 2010 Kansas City, Missouri 2021 LA GENERAZIONE DELL’OTTANTA AND THE ITALIAN SOUND Alberto Racanati, Candidate for the Doctor of Musical Arts Degree University of Missouri-Kansas City, 2021 ABSTRACT . La Generazione dell’Ottanta (The Generation of the Eighties) is a generation of Italian composers born in the 1880s, all of whom reached their artistic maturity between the two World Wars and who made it a point to part ways musically from the preceding generations that were rooted in operatic music, especially in the Verismo tradition. The names commonly associated with the Generazione are Alfredo Casella (1883-1947), Gian Francesco Malipiero (1882-1973), Ildebrando Pizzetti (1880-1968), and Ottorino Respighi (1879- 1936). In their efforts to create a new music that sounded unmistakingly Italian and fueled by the musical nationalism rampant throughout Europe at the time, the four composers took inspiration from the pre-Romantic music of their country. Individually and collectively, they embarked on a journey to bring back what they considered the golden age of Italian music, with each one yielding a different result. iii Through the creation of artistic associations facilitated by the fascist government, the musicians from the Generazione established themselves on the international scene and were involved with performances of their works around the world.

  • Thesis Submission
    Rebuilding a Culture: Studies in Italian Music after Fascism, 1943-1953 Peter Roderick PhD Music Department of Music, University of York March 2010 Abstract The devastation enacted on the Italian nation by Mussolini’s ventennio and the Second World War had cultural as well as political effects. Combined with the fading careers of the leading generazione dell’ottanta composers (Alfredo Casella, Gian Francesco Malipiero and Ildebrando Pizzetti), it led to a historical moment of perceived crisis and artistic vulnerability within Italian contemporary music. Yet by 1953, dodecaphony had swept the artistic establishment, musical theatre was beginning a renaissance, Italian composers featured prominently at the Darmstadt Ferienkurse , Milan was a pioneering frontier for electronic composition, and contemporary music journals and concerts had become major cultural loci. What happened to effect these monumental stylistic and historical transitions? In addressing this question, this thesis provides a series of studies on music and the politics of musical culture in this ten-year period. It charts Italy’s musical journey from the cultural destruction of the post-war period to its role in the early fifties within the meteoric international rise of the avant-garde artist as institutionally and governmentally-endorsed superman. Integrating stylistic and aesthetic analysis within a historicist framework, its chapters deal with topics such as the collective memory of fascism, internationalism, anti- fascist reaction, the appropriation of serialist aesthetics, the nature of Italian modernism in the ‘aftermath’, the Italian realist/formalist debates, the contradictory politics of musical ‘commitment’, and the growth of a ‘new-music’ culture. In demonstrating how the conflict of the Second World War and its diverse aftermath precipitated a pluralistic and increasingly avant-garde musical society in Italy, this study offers new insights into the transition between pre- and post-war modernist aesthetics and brings musicological focus onto an important but little-studied era.

  • Selected Vocal Works by Progressive Italian
    ABSTRACT Title of Document: SELECTED VOCAL WORKS BY PROGRESSIVE ITALIAN COMPOSERS OF THE TWENTIETH CENTURY: THE CONFLUENCE OF NATIONALISM AND INTERNATIONALISM FROM THE EVE OF WORLD WAR I THROUGH POST-WORLD WAR I1 RECONSTRUCTION Stacey Lynn Mastrian, D.M.A., 2007 Directed By: Professor Dominic Cossa, School of Music This dissertation project explored the non-operatic vocal music (i.e., art song, chamber music, solo works, and other more experimental media) by Italian composers of the 20th century. This body of repertoire suffers from poor availability and quality of scores, recordings, performances, and information. Research took place in the U.S. and Italy-through musical investigations, personal collections and contacts, libraries, and online resources. The project was designed with several parameters in mind: 1. work was centered on the composers who cast the text and the piano or other "accompaniment" in important roles, with correspondingly complex rhythms and harmonies, and who melded cosmopolitan influences with Italianate lyricism, as opposed to those who merely continued in the simplistic, insular manner of their predecessors; 2. settings by Italian composers of texts in other languages were included (Apollinaire, Ibn-Ezra, Machado, Verlaine, etc.) in addition to settings of Italian poetry (d'Annunzio, Pavese, Ungaretti, etc.); 3. works were chosen that were not just for single voice and piano but also utilized other performing forces (i.e., chamber music, electronics.. .). Other selection factors included: score availability;

  • GIORGIO FEDERICO GHEDINI Dopo Aver Studiato Organo, Pianoforte E
