Batman stops Two-Face and discovers that even though Dent has been physically rehabilitated, psychologically he is still Two-Face. Meanwhile Commissioner Gordon, at age seventy, is forced to retire due to his age. He is replaced by Ellen Yindel, a fierce critic of Batman. Batman discovers that a United States Army general had been supplying the Mutants with military weapons in exchange for cash. When Batman confronts him, the general confesses and justifies his actions by saying he needs to help his sick wife. However, the general's conscience is still eating away at him and he eventually commits suicide in front of Batman. Batman then drives a new, fortified version of the Batmobile to the Mutants' meeting ground at the city dump. He fights the Mutants' leader in hand-to-hand combat, and he is badly injured. Only Carrie's quick intervention saves him. As they head back to the Batcave, Carrie tends to Batman's wounds. Batman recovers quickly and allows Carrie to become the new Robin. The Mutant Leader has still threatened to unleash his army on the city, so the Mayor tries to negotiate with him in jail. The Leader then kills the Mayor by ripping his throat out with his teeth. Batman and Carrie infiltrate their ranks and spread a rumor that the Leader wants an assembly. Batman Batman: Dark Knight Returns asks Commissioner Gordon to allow the Leader to escape from jail and draws him to a mud-hole, where the Dark Knight finally defeats him in front of the other mutants. A number of the Mutants accept Batman as their leader and take the name 'the Sons of Batman'; Batman: Dark Knight Returns remainder splinter into small gangs. Batman chases after the Joker as they run through the fair; during the chase the Joker kills several people and Batman manages to gouge one of the Joker's eyes. Eventually, the two confront each other, ironically, in the tunnel of love. Despite being stabbed several times during their struggle, an enraged Batman finally breaks the Joker's neck, but stops short of killing him. Taunting Batman as a coward, Joker twists his head until the remainder of his spine snaps, committing suicide in order to frame Batman: Dark Knight Returns for murder. The Sons of Batman have become vigilantes, maintaining law and order with force. Batman decides to train them to fight crime with non-lethal methods. Meanwhile, a Russian built nuke Batman: Dark Knight Returns off, blocking out the sun and shutting off electronics in the US. Batman and the Sons restore order in Gotham, but soon, the Government dispatches Superman to take down Batman, as he undermines their authority. However, Oliver Queen, the former Green Arrow, who is now a one-armed revolutionary, warns Batman of the Government's plans. Batman begins preparing for his battle against Superman and is equipped with a powerful suit of armor, sonic blaster, a mysterious pill and synthetic Kryptonite which he had spent years developing. Batman and Superman engage in a powerful battle, and, when Queen shoots Superman using an arrowhead loaded with Batman's synthetic Kryptonite, Batman emerges the winner. However, Batman dies of a heart attack shortly thereafter. Meanwhile, Alfred Pennyworth detonates bombs that he and Batman had deliberately planted in the Batcave for just this purpose, and destroys Wayne Manor. Alfred suffers a stroke and dies almost immediately afterward. Bruce Wayne's secret identity as Batman quickly becomes public knowledge, but his accounts have been emptied and his stocks Batman: Dark Knight Returns funds have already been sold. Turns out that it was an excellent decision which not only successfully adapted the first half of Batman: Dark Knight Returns Miller's epic, but added layers to the story and characters that the limited page count of the graphic novel could not leave in. But is Batman truly just a mask Bruce wears? Or is it the other way around? And as for the mutant leader, both he and Batman operate as a symbol to inspire others to action. One a symbol of chaos and crime, the other a symbol of hope and justice. But if the mutant leader's extreme acts Batman: Dark Knight Returns rouse Batman to return to vigilantism, so too can Batman's actions rouse criminals to return to their old ways as one Batman: Dark Knight Returns claims in the story. The characters are brought to life by a fine voice cast who nail their roles perfectly. Peter Weller of Robocop fame takes the role of Batman; a role that may comes across as a monotone baritone at first. But Weller infuses Batman's voice with nuance and subtlety which fits the character well. The only downside is that despite wanting to show a dichotomy between Batman and Bruce Wayne, Weller uses the same tone of voice throughout the whole movie; Compared to previous voice actors, like Kevin Conroy, who used different speech patterns and tones for Wayne and Batman. A lot of deep themes about the nature of heroism vs vigilantism abound in this tale, all of which were in the Batman: Dark Knight Returns comic but just expanded upon in the animation medium. On that note, the animation presented here is the perfect balance of fluidity and Batman: Dark Knight Returns detail. Iconic frames, memorable battles and atmospheric scenes are Batman: Dark Knight Returns faithfully. Its only downside is that Warner decided to use its generic color palate rather than replicate the muted tones and heavy grays colored by Lynn Varley in the original artwork. Fans would be pleased at how true to the original this is and how it expands on the original, smoothening out the rough edges while adding a whole new dimension to the characters. Batman's investigation leads him to Selina, whom he finds bound and dressed like Wonder Woman. Kelley notices cotton candy on the floor, and Batman deduces that Joker is at the fairgrounds. There Kelley accidentally kills Abner while Batman pursues the Joker, who indiscriminately guns down dozens of people. As Batman corners a wounded and partially blinded Joker, he admits to feeling responsible for every murder Joker has committed and intends to stop him permanently. In the ensuing fight, Joker stabs Batman repeatedly, and Batman breaks Joker's neck in front of witnesses. However, Joker is still alive, albeit paralyzed from the neck-down. Content that Batman will be branded a murderer, the Joker finishes twisting his neck, killing himself. Superman deflects a Soviet nuclear missile, but is hit with the blast and badly injured. The detonation creates an electromagnetic pulse that wipes out all electrical equipment in the United States and causes a nuclear winter. When Superman gains the advantage, Queen hits him with an arrow made with synthetic Kryptoniteseverely weakening him. Batman savagely beats Superman, claiming that he intentionally made the Kryptonite weak, and tells Superman never to forget that Batman could have killed him whenever he wanted. In the aftermath, the world learns that Bruce was Batman; all of his secrets are destroyed with the manor and his finances disappear.
