The recent decision of the Council of Ministers to ban unvaccinated citizens from traveling resulted in the reduction of the number of passengers departing from the airport by one third of the previous num- ber. Operations Department Director at the Directo- rate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) Mansour Al-Hashimi told the daily that 63 fl ights with a total of 6,136 passengers departed on May 20 and 21. Af- ter the implementation of the abovementioned deci- sion, the number of passengers decreased by 47% on May 22 and 23 -- a total of 4,138 passengers. He added the number of arrival fl ights decreased from 62 with 1,900 passengers on May 20 and 21 to 44 fl ights with 1,410 passengers on May 22 and 23. He said the coronavirus pandemic, which led to the cancellation of many fl ights and reservations, along with strict health regulations in some coun- tries, did not prevent those wishing to spend their vacation outside the country. He affi rmed the DGCA is keen on implementing the decisions and circulars of the Council of Minis- ters and follow the procedures specifi ed by health authorities as these are in the interest of everyone. He revealed Kuwait International Airport is still op- erating at 10 percent capacity, and all fl ights are for citizens and their fi rst-degree relatives only. Bid to review bad decisions Advocates new push to bring back deportees

MIAMI, May 29, (AP): Jesus Lopez says he feels like a stran- ger in the place he was born. He’s from Guadalajara, Mexico, but his life was in Chicago. After 15 years in the city, he was deported a year ago during the COVID-19 pandemic. “I want to go back because I belong there, that’s where I have my friends, my family,” said the 25-year-old, once a re- cipient of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program that gives protections to immigrants brought to the US as chil- dren. Lopez, who said he didn’t renew his spot in the program because he couldn’t afford it, hopes to benefi t from new efforts by advocates, groups and attorneys to bring back immigrants they believe were unfairly deported from the United States. Thursday, the government estimated that the economy grew at a robust 6.4% rate in the January-March quarter, powered in large part by consumer and business spending. The economy is thought to be expanding even faster in the current April-June quarter with many analysts forecasting an annual fi gure of 10% or more. The outlook for the rest of the year is brightening, too, on the strength of trillions of dollars more in government support, increased mobility as vaccinations keep increasing and a surge in pent-up consumer demand. More Americans are venturing out to shop, travel, dine out and gather in large groups at sporting and entertainment venues. For 2021 as a whole, many economists foresee growth, as measured by the gross domestic product, achieving its fastest pace since at least 1984. As the recovery rapidly expands, the risk of a pickup in infl ation continues to loom. Should infl ation, which has been dormant for years, begin to accelerate on a sustained basis, it might compel the Fed to respond with interest rate hikes that could derail the recovery. Gus Faucher, chief economist at PNC Financial, said that while the April infl ation fi gures exceeded expectations, much of the increase related to supply-chain bottlenecks in such areas as computer chips and autos. “We have some temporary infl ation pressures,” Faucher said, “but those will fade, so there is nothing that the Fed- eral Reserve is going to be concerned about.” When asked about the rise in infl ation, Chair Jerome Powell and other Fed offi cials have said repeatedly that they believe the infl a- tion spikes that have surfaced with some goods will prove temporary as bottlenecked supply chains are unclogged. ‘Group illegally raised $2b in crypto offering’ WASHINGTON, May 29, (AP): Federal regulators have accused a group of people of promoting a securities offering tied to digital currency that raised over $2 billion from retail investors without being properly registered. The Securities and Exchange Commission filed the civil lawsuit Friday in federal court in Manhattan. It alleges that an outfit called BitConnect used a network of promoters to sell the securities without registering the offering with the SEC, or registering themselves, as brokers as required by law. The promoters touted the benefits of investing in BitConnect’s program, creating testimonial-style videos and publishing them on YouTube, some- times multiple times a day, according to the regula- tors. The promoters allegedly received commis- sions based on their success in bringing in money from investors. The suit is the latest in a series of enforcement actions involving digital assets that the SEC has taken starting in 2013. The actions against crypto- currency issuers, brokers and exchanges have come as digital currencies like Bitcoin have exploded in popularity in recent years amid extreme price vola- tility. The SEC has collected an estimated $1.77 billion in penalties in settlements of cases, accord- ing to financial experts. ARAB TIMES, SUNDAY, MAY 30, 2021 BUSINESS 9

Germany, Norway fl ip switch on $2.4 bln link BERLIN, May 29, (AP): Germany and Norway inau- gurated a new undersea cable Thursday that directly links the two countries’ electricity networks, a pro- ject that has been described as a key step in Europe’s effort to shift away from fossil fuels to renewable energy. The 2-billion-euro ($2.4 billion) project, called Nordlink, will allow Germany to export excess elec- tricity from its wind parks to Norway, effectively banking it in Nordic nation’s vast hydropower res- ervoirs. During periods of little wind, electricity can be released from Norwegian reservoirs again to meet German demand. “We’re setting a milestone for the modern ener- gy supply in Europe,” German Chancellor Angela Merkel said during a virtual ceremony to offi cially switch on the power link. The 623-kilometer (387-mile) cable runs under the North Sea, from Germany’s windswept northern state of Schleswig-Holstein to Tonstad in southern Norway. Operators say it can carry enough electric- ity to supply 3.6 million households at once. The new system should help lower the price of electricity in Germany, which is relatively high compared to other European countries, said Claudia Kemfert, a senior energy expert at the German Insti- tute for Economic Research. Oil-rich Norway meets almost all of its electricity needs using renewable sources, and electricity from its hydropower facilities is comparatively cheap. By tapping into the Norwegian grid, Germany can avoid building costly stand-by power plants of its own, Kemfert said. “Nordlink is no replacement for the expansion of renewable energy here in Germany, but it can signifi - cantly help balance out fl uctuations,” she said. The German government recently announced that it aims to reduce the country’s greenhouse gas emis- sions to “net zero” by 2045. Since Germany is shutting down its last nuclear plants next year and phasing out the use of coal by 2038, a massive expansion of wind and solar power generation will be required to meet the demands of its 83 million inhabitants and industry. “Nordlink will facilitate Germany’s transition to renewable energy,” Norwegian Prime Minister Erna Solberg said of the project, which took 10 years to complete. “At the same time, it will give us in Nor- way energy when we need it.” ARAB TIMES, SUNDAY, MAY 30, 2021 SCIENCE 11

UK approves J&J shot India’s jab inequality to prolong pandemic

NEW DELHI, May 29, (AP): As the coronavirus tears through India, night watchman Sagar Kumar thinks constant- ly about getting vaccines for himself and his family of fi ve amid critical shortages of shots in the country. But even if he knew how to get one, it wouldn’t be easy. The main way is to register through a government website. But it is in English — a language the 25-year-old Kumar and nearly 90% of Indians can’t speak, read or write — and his family has a single smartphone, with spotty internet service. And even though his state of Uttar Pradesh gives free shots to those under 45, there is no vaccination site in his village, with the nearest hospital an hour away. “All I can do now is hope for the best,” Kumar said. The pandemic’s disparities already were stark in India, where access to health care is as stratifi ed and unequal as many other parts of society. Now wealth and technology is further wid- ening those chasms, and millions are falling through the gaps. That worries health experts, who say vaccine inequality could hamper India’s already diffi cult fi ght against a virus that has been killing more than 4,000 people a day in recent weeks. “Inequitable vaccination risks pro- longing the pandemic in India,” said Krishna Udayakumar, founding di- Udayakumar rector of the Duke Global Health In- novation Center at Duke University in North Carolina. “Re- ducing barriers for the most vulnerable populations should be a priority.” India’s vaccination campaign began in January with a goal A relative comforts the wailing son of a person who died of COVID-19, at a crematorium in Srinagar, Indian controlled Kashmir, May 28. Italy’s Carla Fracci dies Classic ‘Caterpillar’ author Carle dead

NEW YORK, May 29, (AP): Eric Carle, the beloved children’s author and illustrator whose classic “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” and other works gave mil- lions of kids some of their earliest and most cherished literary memories, has died at age 91. Carle’s family says he died last Sunday at his sum- mer studio in Northampton, Massachusetts, with fam- ily members at his side. The family’s announcement was issued by Penguin Young Leaders. Through books like “Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?” “Do You Want to Be My Friend?” and “From Head to Toe,” Carle introduced universal themes in simple words and bright colors. “The unknown often brings fear with it,” he once observed. “In my books I try to counteract this fear, to replace it with a positive message. I be- lieve that children are naturally creative and eager to learn. I want to show them that learn- ing is really both fascinating and fun.” “The Very Hungry Caterpil- lar,” published in 1969, was welcomed by parents and de- lighted kids with its story of the metamorphosis of a green and Carle red caterpillar with a touch of blue and brown to a proudly multi-colored butterfl y. Originally conceived as a book about a bookworm - called “A Week with Willi the Worm” - the hero, who eats through 26 different foods, was changed to a caterpillar on the advice of his editor. It has sold some 40 million copies and has been translated into 60 lan- guages, spawned stuffed animal caterpillars and has been turned into a stage play. “I remember that as a child, I always felt I would never grow up and be big and articulate and intelli- gent,” Carle told The New York Times in 1994. ”`Cat- erpillar’ is a book of hope: you, too, can grow up and grow wings.” This image provided by HBO Max shows Jennifer Aniston, (from left), Courteney Cox, Matthew Perry, Lisa Kudrow, David Schwimmer and Matt LeBlanc in a Expressionist scene from the ‘Friends’ reunion special. The American Academy of Pediatrics sent more than 17,000 pediatricians special copies of the book, along with growth charts and parent hand- Television outs on healthy eating. Fellow writer and illustrator Ted Dewan called the book one of the pillars of chil- dren’s culture. “It’s almost talking about how great the Beatles were. It’s beyond reproach,” he said. China, which play Guam on Sun- day, still have much work to do. Takumi Minamino’s brace for Japan, and a goal each from Hide- masa Morita, Daichi Kamada and Ko Itakura, gave a weakened Myanmar their heaviest-ever defeat. Myanmar, which were missing several stars who had refused to play in protest at February’s military coup, hadn’t played an international match in 18 months because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The result was beyond doubt quick- ly. Osako scored three goals in the first half hour and another two in the second half at Fukuda Denshi Arena, which was closed to fans because of restrictions in place because of the coronavirus.

“We’ve shown that aggressive at- titude, to go for another goal even after the result was beyond doubt, and also not slacking off to keep a clean sheet,” head coach Hajime Moriyasu said, according to the Ky- odo news agency. “They were focused on playing at a high standard.” Japan has the best re- cord of all teams in the second round of Asian qualification, with 37 goals and none conceded in its six wins in Group F. It moves to the next stage, scheduled to start in September, with two matches to spare.
