Shiseido Joins Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil

Shiseido considers the need to preserve biodiversity (to preserve the bounty of the Earth) during every stage of the product life cycle, from the procurement of ingredients to manufacture, distribution, sales activities, customer use, and disposal, and we strive to utilize sustainable resources. As a company that uses palm oil, palm oil-derived fatty acids, and their associated processed materials, we have joined the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO)*1 in order to aid in our future ability to make continued use of the Earth’s limited bounty. We are committed to maintaining a deep understanding and awareness of the environmental and social problems that currently affect palm oil production and to examining how palm oil can be used in a sustainable manner.

*1 Head Office: Zurich, Switzerland; number of members: 363 corporations and organizations(from http://www.rspo.org/) Shiseido completed the process of joining the RSPO as a full member on Tuesday, September 21, 2010, becoming the eighth Japanese corporation to do so. The other seven Japanese member corporations are ; Lion Corporation; Saraya Co., Ltd.; Co-Op Clean Co., Ltd.; EX Corporation; & Co., Ltd.; and Corporation.

Palm oil Palm oil, a vegetable oil produced from the fruit and seeds of the African oil palm (Elaeis guineensis), is utilized worldwide as a raw material or ingredient in the production of foods, detergents, and other products that are essential in daily life. Palm oil, palm oil-derived fatty acids, and associated processed materials are widely distributed for use in cosmetics, and Shiseido makes use of these materials.

The RSPO The RSPO is an international non-profit organization established in 2004 by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and corporations deeply involved with palm oil. It aims to promote a sustainable palm oil industry through the dissemination of principles and criteria for sustainable palm oil production*2. Members include a range of corporations and organizations, including producers, processors, consumable manufacturers, and environmental NGOs.

*2 Specifically, these encompass principles and criteria formulated with the objective of achieving sustainable palm oil production, for example by preventing the overdevelopment of farms and protecting laborers. Biodiversity at Shiseido The Shiseido Eco Policy, enacted in 1992 as our business policy on the environment, places environmental activities at the core of our management. The policy’s first provision calls on us to “consider the environment and use natural resources and energy with great care.” In 2010, we enacted Biodiversity at Shiseido*3 to complement that philosophy. Going forward, we pursue environmental activities that span the three areas of preserving biodiversity

(preserving the bounty of the Earth), reducing CO2, and conserving resources.

*3 Shiseido is grateful for the benefits of the Earth, the source of new values. Recognizing that the resources of the Earth are limited, we will use them wisely and fairly for the sake of future generations. Working proactively for their conservation, we will strive to realize a sustainable society. (http://www.shiseido.co.jp/e/csr/envi/index.htm)
