[email protected] 74 CAPE VERDEAN KRIOLU AS AN EPISTEMOLOGY OF CONTACT Cape Verdean Kriolu as an epistemology of contact Kriolu as language and sentiment represents a “contact perspective”, an outlook on life and medium of identiication historically structured by the encounter. Cape Verde was born out of an early creole formation and movement is an essential part of Cape Verdean practices of language and identity. Most recently, the Portuguese state and third-party real estate developers have provided another scenario in the long series of (dis) emplacement dramas for Cape Verdeans as Lisbon administrations have pushed to demol- ish “improvised” housing and regroup people into “social” neighborhoods. -

DOI: 10.5533/TEM-1980-542X-2013173407eng Revista Tempo | Vol. 17 n. 34 | Dossiê Uma história do esporte para um país esportivo Sports in the colonial Portuguese politics: Boletim Geral do Ultramar Victor Andrade de Melo[1] and Marcelo Bittencourt[2] Abstract The article aimed at discussing the treatment of the theme sport in theBoletim Geral do Ultramar (Overseas General Bulletin), an official publication launched by the Portuguese government. From an overview of the relations between Portugal and its colonies in the context of sports, in the post World War II, we analyzed the representations on the sport mobilized by such metropolis, launching a new look at its colonial policy. O esporte na política colonial portuguesa: o Boletim Geral do Ultramar Resumo O artigo tem por objetivo discutir como o tema esporte foi tratado no Boletim Geral do Ultramar, uma publicação oficial do governo português. A partir de um panorama das relações estabeleci- das entre Portugal e suas colônias no âmbito da prática esportiva, após a Segunda Guerra Mundial, foram analisadas as representações acerca do esporte mobilizadas pela metrópole, lançando um novo olhar sobre sua política colonial. REVIEWS I already mentioned that Horáková’s and Werkman’s book deals less with knowledge production in Africa than with knowledge production about Africa. While, for example, Viera Pawliková-Vilhanová rightly deplores that “the history of Africa” has only been viewed from a Eurocentric perspective, because there are still no “true African” theories, she does not deal with African perceptions of knowledge production. Hana Horáková’s and Kateřina Werkman’s book is a thorough exploration of the topic “Knowledge about Africa,” sensitising its readers to the many (mis-)representations about Africa and Africans. These are (still) important and relevant statements, albeit no longer particularly innovative. Thus, the book describes convincingly and thoroughly how patterns first elaborated in Said’s “Orientalism” also play a central role in the knowledge production on Africa. Prague: Nakladatelství Lidové noviny, 384 pp. The second edition of the publication under review is testimony to the fact that interest in understanding the history of Africa among Czech readers is constantly growing. In its series on the history of nations, the publisher Nakladatelství Lidové noviny has already covered 13 African countries, while the author of the reviewed publication has previously contributed to works devoted to Angola, Mozambique, Guinea-Bissau and Namibia. In addition, Jan Klíma, the leading Czech authority on the Lusophone world, is also the author of histories on Portugal and Brazil. The author has already displayed his deep knowledge of Lusophone Africa in a number of previous books and articles devoted to topics such as the Portuguese Colonial War. -
