DUPRE Dans leur revue sur les prédateurs de scorpions, Polis, Sissom & Mac Cormick (1981) relèvent 150 espèces dont essentiellement des espèces adaptées au comportement nocturne de leur proie (chouettes, rongeurs, carnivores nocturnes) mais également des espèces diurnes (lézards, rongeurs, carnivores....) qui débusquent les scorpions sous les pierres ou dans leurs terriers. Dans une précédente note (Dupré, 2008) nous avions effectué un relevé afin d'actualiser cette étude de 1981. Sept ans après, de nouvelles données sont présentées dans cette synthèse. Voici un nouveau relevé des espèces prédatrices. Nous ne faisons pas mention des scorpions qui feront l'objet d'un futur article traité avec le cannibalisme. Explication des tableaux: La première colonne correspond aux prédateurs, la seconde aux régions concernées et la troisième aux références. Dans la mesure du possible, les noms scientifiques ont été rectifiés en fonction des synonymies ou des nouvelles combinaisons appliquées depuis les dates de publication d'origine. Nevertheless, the subject of scorpion distribution has received relatively less attention than other ecological aspects of that group. It is a matter that changes continuously and moreover it is hard to define. Three different scales in distribution are introduced here: (1) Mini-distribution which describes the presence of scorpions under a single shelter or in a burrow, within a single habitat, (2) micro-distribution describing the distribution within a single habitat, and (3) macro-distribution within different habitats. Most research in scorpion distribution concentrated on the first aspect the mini-distribution. The subject is reviewed in scorpions and discussed. Keywords mini-distribution; micro-distribution; macro-distribution; Scorpiones. 1 Introduction Distribution of scorpions in the field is a subject that has never actually been dealt with except perhaps briefly in Polis (1990). What is actually meant by distribution? Does one mean geographical distribution? Or does one mean a local distribution. It appears to me that it is a matter of scaling. Thus the terms mini-distribution, micro-distribution and macro-distribution are introduced here to illustrate three different scales of distributions. Mini-distribution illustrates the presence of scorpions under a single shelter or in a burrow, within a single area in a single habitat within a single zoogeographic region. -

Butterflies are good indicators of environmental health, and they play a critical role in the food chain. Butterfly diversity and abundance were studied for the first time at three forests and their surrounding habitats in northwestern Ethiopia, a borderline ecosystem between the subtropical savannah and the Ethiopian highlands (Afromontane). Butterfly species richness and abundance were assessed using transects between October 2018 and June 2019. Data were analyzed using analysis of variance, correlation and regression analysis, diversity indices, ordination analysis, cluster analysis, and rarefaction curves. A total of 27,568 butterflies were recorded that belonged to three families, five subfamilies, and eight genera. +e forest habitat had more butterfly taxa (abundance and diversity) than other habitats. Belenois spp. and Mylothris agathina were the most abundant in all three study locations. Species common to all study areas include Belenois aurota, Belenois raffrayi, Mylothris agathina, Eronia leda, Junonia terea elgiva, and Phalanta eurytis neuritis. -

For those of you looking for accommodation in Knysna, Dave forwarded the flowing link: Places to stay in Knysna We have found, at recent LepSoc Africa Conferences, that presentation of the annual reports of various LSA officers takes up most, if not all, of the three-hours that have traditionally been allocated to the Annual General Meeting. At last year’s conference in Hermannsburg, there was dissatisfaction about the time available for general discussion among members present at the meeting. This year, we are going to do it differently! Using the approach that has been adopted by the Entomological Society of Southern Africa (Entsocsa), the reports of office bearers will be circulated to the entire LepSoc Africa membership at least two weeks before the AGM. At the AGM, a condensed summary of the various reports will be presented for ratification, following which there will be a brief discussion. Significant issues, that require resolution at the AGM, should be raised by LSA members prior to the meeting and the salient points submitted for discussion under Matters Arising. WINDHOEK After arrival in Namibia’s capital, we had a day to relax and enjoy the excellent birding on offer around this small and charming city. Windhoek has a population of about 300,000, out of Namibia’s tiny population of only 2.1 million, remarkable for a country that is twice the size of California. Monteiro’s Hornbill (left), one of many Namibian near-endemic birds that we were seeking. On our morning walk at Avis Dam, we enjoyed Barred Wren-Warbler (top left) and Black-fronted or African Red-eyed Bulbul (bottom left), while there were a bounty of waterbirds at the Gammons Water Care (Sewage!) Works, including Red-knobbed Coot (middle left) and African Darter (right). From Windhoek, in the central mountains, we descended into the Namib Desert, where species like the Common Ostrich survive despite incredibly harsh conditions. Creatures of the Namib: South African Ground Squirrel (bottom right); Tractrac Chat (top right); and Rueppell’s Bustard (left). WALVIS BAY AND SWAKOPMUND The Namib dune fields hold Namibia’s sole political endemic bird, the Dune Lark. Walvis Bay itself is a mecca for waterbirds, including thousands of Lesser Flamingos (right-hand page). Spitzkoppe is Namibia’s most distinctive and iconic mountain. Our avian target at Spitzkoppe was the charismatic and scarce Herero Chat. -

Dwaalboom Switching Station December 2008 5.2. Locality option 2: Site B. Site B is located to the south of where the Spitskop-Segoditshane 132kV line crosses the D112 roadway and is directly south of Site A. This proposed development area is therefore also already marginally impacted by an existing powerline servitude. The actual site area is typical of the vegetation type, being an open bushveld savanna; however, it has been subjected to greater negative ecological impacts through historical land management practices, vegetation removal and poor veld management (than that of Site A and, to a lesser degree, Site C). Trees and shrubs were well represented throughout the site, with grasses dominating the understory. There was a higher degree of bare soil observed within this site. The actual powerline servitude was once again typically void of trees and tall shrubs and dominated by pioneering grass species and smaller shrubs. Figure 6 presents various views of Site option B. This site showed a relatively lower density of nationally protected tree species as well as other larger and well-established trees than that of Site A and C. The two species that were observed, General Ecological Survey 15 Dwaalboom Switching Station December 2008 namely Combretum imberbe (Leadwood) and Sclerocarya birrea subsp caffra (Marula) are protected under the National Forests Act 84 of 1998 and therefore application to the DWAF would have to be made in order to remove these trees prior to the commencement of any construct activities. There is a lower density of these protected tree species within this proposed site in relation to the other two construction site options (Sites A and C) and a higher proportion of bare soil. -
