Marist College Enews

Important dates Dear Marist Family,

Wednesday 21 March – Boys’ Education Friday 23 March Year 5 Camp There has been much discussion in the press in recent years on the value of co-education resulting in many misleading statements Monday 26 March by those opposed to single gender education to promote their cause. Year 7 Immunisation Day We all know there is immense overlap between the genders and that each child is an individual not to be limited by a gender stereotype. Tuesday 27 March We also know, however, that boys and girls learn differently. We now Father and Son Breakfast, 7.30am – 8.30am, Senior have scientific evidence that documents the many biological gender School Pavilion (Bookings closed) differences that influence learning. For instance, girls talk sooner, Wednesday 28 March develop better vocabularies, read better and have better fine motor Year 9 Integration Day skills. Boys, on the other hand, have better auditory memory, are better at three-dimensional reasoning, are more prone to explore and achieve greater abstract design ability. Year 11 and 12 Study Day

Year 6 Grade Assembly, 2.00pm, Junior School Hall This research clearly demonstrates how this distinction in hard-wiring and socialised gender difference Friday 30 March affects how boys and girls learn. Research also presents specific ways to educate our children based on Good Friday brain science, neurological development, and chemical and hormonal disparities. For example, a girl’s retina is built very differently from the retina of a boy. When a boy and a girl look at the same landscape, Way of the Cross, 10.00am, starts Junior School Lawns they are seeing very different images. Furthermore, most girls and women interpret facial expressions Monday 2 April better than most boys and men. Boys and girls hear differently as well. It may come as no surprise to Easter Monday many mothers and wives that teenage girls do in fact hear better than boys and this difference only gets bigger as the children get older. We know girls draw nouns while boys prefer to draw verbs and yes, boys Tuesday 3 April – are better with directions! Friday 6 April Junior School Scholastic Book Fair There is also significant differences in how a girl’s brain and a boy’s brain processes emotions – both good and bad. Asking a teenage boy to talk about how he feels is a question guaranteed to make most Wednesday 4 April boys feel uncomfortable. The bottom line is the brain is just organised differently in females and males. Year 5 Grade Assembly, 2.00pm, Junior School Hall The tired argument about which sex is more intelligent or which sex has the ‘better’ brain is about as Thursday 5 April meaningful as arguing which utensil is ‘better’, a knife or a spoon. The only correct answer to such a South Weston Primary Swimming, AIS question is: “Better for what?” I find the recent research fascinating and understand these differences have major implications for best practice in education – and also for effective parenting. Many of the Friday 6 April large co-educational schools in Australia recognise these learning differences and conduct parallel Dempsey House Day single sex classes to cater for the differences.

Monday 9 April At Marist College Canberra, we pride ourselves as experts in the teaching of boys. Whilst there is no 50th Jubilee Foundation Golf Day, Royal Canberra simple answer as to how best to educate boys, the weight of research suggests that a fair proportion of Golf Club boys prefer: Monday 9 April – • Structure • Closed task Wednesday 11 April • Kinaesthetic learning • Multi-sensory approaches to learning Junior School Parent Teacher Interviews • Analytical tasks • Practical hands-on types of activities Tuesday 10 April • Shorter tasks • Competition Year 7 – 12 Parent Teacher Interviews ASC Swimming Carnival Holy Week Friday 25 May 50th Jubilee Foundation Blue & Blue Gala Dinner, I do hope that families take the opportunity to spend some time allowing for reflection on the 6.30pm – 11.30pm, AIS Arena foundation of our Catholic heritage. The Easter celebrations are so rich and full of symbolism, expressing what it is that is at the core of our Christian beliefs.

We get the chance to recall the Last Supper and the agony in the garden, walking the stations with Christ on His way to Calvary, through to celebrating the resurrection, providing us all with opportunities to come back to the heart of our tradition. May I gently ask families to support their son’s faith by participating in the Church’s celebration of Holy Week.

CURRICULUM IN FOCUS

JUNKYARD INSTRUMENTS SUPERCHARGING YOUR CHILD’S BRAIN

Students in Year 8 Amplified have been constructing Junkyard Instruments WITH MUSIC out of recycled materials. They will perform improvised and notated ensemble performances for their peers on their instruments in the coming week. Dr Anita Collins, a leading researcher in the fields of Neuroscience and Music, will present an informative lecture on Thursday 22 March from 6.00pm at Jarrod Schindler Canberra Girls Grammar School. Head of Performing Arts Musically trained children have better language and communication skills, can focus for longer, and are more likely to stick with difficult problems until they solve them. They are better able to control their own emotional responses, understand the emotional responses of others, and have significantly better working and long term memory systems.

Come along and hear Dr Collins speak for free on Thursday, 22 March, about this exciting and impactful research at the CGGS Science Atrium, Avenue, Deakin. Refreshments from 5.30pm.

Brian (from ACT Athletics) taught us a lot about building strength in our arms, legs and upper bodies. He helped us with shot put, long jump and discus. Brian helped us train and get ready for the Athletics Carnival so each of the Houses were ready. The boys are convinced that shot put, discus and long jump are good sports to help them with their strength. We learnt some really good warm-ups and worked together as a team in the sessions.
