C HRIST IN G LORY

The Gospel this weekend is Matthew’s account of the Transfiguration on Mount Tabor. This momentary vision of Christ, in his glory, was given in order to strengthen the three principal Apostles to face the trials to their faith, which the sufferings and crucifixion of their beloved master would bring on them. For the very same reason it is retold to us today, to encourage us to persevere in our faith journey through life which, like the mountain climb, includes moments of uphill struggle and difficult terrain. As St. Paul reminds us: “If we are sharers with Christ in his sufferings, we shall be sharers with him in his glory”.

This is a truth we all too easily forget, namely, that we cannot and do not get to heaven comfortably. Our spell on earth is the chance given to us to strive for our eternal reward. This reward surpasses even the wildest imagination of man. We could never earn it, but God accepts the little we can do and provides the balance of his infinite mercy.

Christ has asked us to follow him, carrying our daily cross, and the end of our journey is not Calvary but resurrection, the entrance to a life of glory with our risen Saviour. The Christian who grasps his cross closely and willingly, knowing its value for his real life, will find it becomes lighter and something we carry more serenely. The man who tries to shake off his cross, and who curses and rebels against Him who allowed it, will find it doubles in weight and loses all the value it was intended to have as a means to draw us closer to God, indeed closer to heaven.

Let the thought of the Transfiguration encourage each one of us today, to do the little God demands of us, so that when we close our eyes to this life we may be assured of seeing Christ in his glory, ready to welcome us into his everlasting kingdom.

The Sacrament of Confirmation

It is fitting to consider the sign of anointing and what it signifies and imprints: a spiritual seal. Anointing, in Biblical symbolism, is rich in meaning: oil is a sign of abundance and joy; it cleanses. Anointing with oil has all these meanings in the sacramental life. The pre-baptismal anointing with the oil of catechumens signifies cleansing and strengthening; the anointing of the sick expresses healing and comfort. The post-baptismal anointing with sacred chrism in Confirmation and ordination is the sign of consecration. By Confirmation Christians, that is, those who are anointed, share more completely in the mission of Jesus Christ and the fullness of the Holy Spirit with which he is filled, so that their lives may give off "the aroma of Christ." By this anointing the confirmandi receives the "mark," the seal of the Holy Spirit. A seal is a symbol of a person, a sign of personal authority, or ownership of an object. Christ himself declared that he was marked with his Father's seal. This seal of the Holy Spirit marks our total belonging to Christ, our enrolment in his service for ever, as well as the promise of divine protection in the great of trials. The effect of the sacrament of Confirmation is the full outpouring of the Holy Spirit as once granted to the apostles on the day of Pentecost. From this fact, Confirmation brings an increase and deepening of baptismal grace:

- it unites us more firmly to Christ - it increases the gifts of the Holy Spirit in us - it renders our bond with the Church more perfect - it gives us a special strength of the Holy Spirit to spread and defend the faith by word and action as true witnesses of Christ, to confess the name of Christ boldly, and never to be ashamed of the Cross

- it roots us more deeply in the divine sonship

Like Baptism which it completes, Confirmation is given only once, for it too imprints on the soul an indelible spiritual mark, the "character”. This perfects the common priesthood of the faithful, received in Baptism. Every baptized person not yet confirmed can and should receive the sacrament of Confirmation. Since Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist form a unity, it follows that "the faithful are obliged to receive this sacrament at the appropriate time," for without Confirmation and Eucharist, Baptism is certainly valid and efficacious, but Christian initiation remains incomplete. The ordinary minister of Confirmation is the Bishop.

NEW CHURCH BELL

The Parish is preparing to erect a new digital church bell to commemorate the 125th Anniversary of our foundation. The bell will be located within the grounds of the Church carpark and will toll at 12noon and 6pm each day to mark the Angelus. It will also toll for funerals, weddings and before each weekend Mass. This is a great reminder to call us to pray in the midst of our busy lives.

The parish has now received permission from the council to proceed with the construction of the bell which will be mounted discreetly on a pole outside. The toll volumes will be set to ensure it is not a nuisance to our neighbours.

An Irish company Beltron are charged with the works which we hope to complete inside the next few months. The full cost of the bell and installation is £4800. Parishioners wishing to contribute to these costs are asked to use the envelope which will be attached to each bulletin later in August. Your generosity would be greatly appreciated with this project which will form part of the legacy of this 125th jubilee year for generations to come.

CATHOLIC TEACHER APPROVAL

Those wishing to teach in the Catholic sector are reminded that it is first necessary to obtain approval from your parish priest to show that you accept and live the Catholic faith. For those living within the parish of St. Augustine’s this means approval from Fr. Kane. This applies to those about to enrol for the teaching course, those starting- out as probationary teachers, and all those applying for new posts (promoted or otherwise) within a Catholic school.

In recent times it has become increasingly difficult to grant approvals on the basis that some applicants are not known to attend Mass regularly, and because of other difficulties. Therefore, it is good to remind Catholic applicants that you make yourself known to Fr. Kane well in advance of presenting an approval form. If Fr. Kane does not know you then an approval will not be granted. In the case that a Catholic candidate is not granted approval then that person cannot teach within a Catholic school. Please contact Fr. Kane if you have any questions about this process.

PARISH JUBILEE BOOK

The professionally printed jubilee celebration book, with 85 pages in colour, is packed with the history and photographs of the artefacts of the church since its foundation to present times. Also included is lots of information the groups and societies within the parish.

The book is available to buy now either from the Parish Shop or Kairos Cafe at the price of £10.
