Bringing Back the Brighton Belle. The wonderful Brighton Belle, the only electric all-Pullman train in the world, succeeded the steam service between London and Brighton in 1933 and became the world's first electric inter-city train. A much-loved railway icon, the three five-car train sets were withdrawn by BR in 1972. Now we have a wonderful idea - an amazing feat of restoration, to bring together a complete train set and return the Belle to the mainline! To follow progress with the restoration and help. http://www.brightonbelle.com

One such day was on March 17th, 2019, when it was used in the formation of the Nigel Dobbing memorial special (King’s Lynn-Melton Mowbray), Nigel being the late manager of the Railway Touring Club charter operator. The formation - included WCRC 99347, Ex E347 - passes Helpston on its way back to King’s Lynn. ------Vintage Trains, Tyseley, Birmingham.

Tommy Knox.

As ever my thanks to Tommy Knox for the following information on steam hauled Pullman services on the East Coast Main Line. Within the text reference is made to ‘Up’ and ‘Dn’ workings. These relate thus, an ‘Up’ working is a service to London Kings Cross, and ‘Dn’ is a ‘Down’ working from Kings Cross. I.e. All lines to any of London’s terminals are classified as the ‘UP Line’.

Can you help Tommy?

Tommy is updating the database on a daily basis and would be most grateful if any newsletter reader who undertook train spotting in steam days could look through their notebooks and if they find any information to contact him. Tommy is also happy to answer any reasonable enquiries if he can. My email address is [email protected].

It has been found to be more convenient to upholster the seats in-house rather than put it out to a contractor. Recently there has been a welcome interest in moquette trimming by one or two new volunteers, and this will become a little easier in the future when the new Heritage Skills Centre adjacent to the new shed is complete.

Attention will turn to the bogies later, which are currently stored in the OP4 extension to the carriage works as Car 54 itself is supported by other means at the moment. These original Pullman bogies will require a complete strip-down so that the bearings can be attended to and the axles ultrasonically tested. The car has not run for very many years, so this aspect is quite important.

The Bluebell Railway temporarily hosted two BR Mk1 Pullman Cars on March 23rd, when a “Steam Dreams” railtour arrived behind the LNER Class B1 locomotive ‘Mayflower’ from Southend. The train included former second class Pullman parlour cars ‘Amethyst (II)’ (Formerly CAR No. 352) and ‘Topaz (III)’ (Formerly CAR No. 348) along with ordinary BR Mk1 carriages from the fleet. The set was stabled at Kingscote station whilst the tour participants travelled down to Sheffield Park on a Bluebell train hauled by S15 Class No. 847. Many opted to travel across to the National Trust Gardens for which a coach shuttle was laid on, then everyone returned to Kingscote to rejoin the tour train back to Southend.

PULLMAN CARS BARBARA, THEODORA, ARIES & Mark 1 Restaurant Unclassified (RU) E1987.

BARBARA.

The new roof canvas to BARBARA was allowed to lay on the roof for 10 days to allow the creases and folds to drop out, ready for the permanent “glueing” down. We at the KESR fold the canvas from each end to the centre of the vehicle and then proceed to apply the adhesive ( Williamsons – Roof Canvas Bonding) to about two metres of length at a time laying and smoothing out the canvas in sections, gradually working to the end of the coach. This is all done from the safety of a scaffolded decking. The operation is then repeated for the other half until completion of the roof , which was then left for about ten days before painting commenced. The fitting of the roof canvas involved 7 members of the C & W team of staff and volunteers and was completed by lunch. The many coats of paint were then applied followed by the refitting of the various roof vents and rain strips. A decision was made to trial a paint system new to us for the final coat.

PULLMAN - Edition No.48 - May & June 2019 “Information is for sharing and not gathering dust” Page 34 of 68

This a 2C Colour Coat which is a pigment 2- component coating based on epoxy-propane and butoxyethanol that forms a protective layer in one pass. It is a nanotechnology based coating by Chemona Nanocoat Technologies and should give us a much longer life than conventional paint systems. As BARBARA and THEODORA have both been painted at the same time, we will be able to compare the lifespan to determine if it warrants the extra cost.

Barbara was moved out of the scaffolding bay to allow completion of the bodyside repairs and repainting. One of the problems with the design of BARBARA is that a window has to be removed to allow the armchair style seating to be taken out. This was done to a window that had suffered from some water ingress so needed repairing. All the seats were removed, and the old twenty year old carpet was taken up to be replaced with new. The original flooring to the vehicle is in perfect condition and needed no attention. The new carpet has been laid and the seating and window put back. Work is now continuing on the external repaint, lining, sign writing and varnishing. It is anticipated that the vehicle will be out shopped by the end of May 2019

THEODORA.

Work continued on the replacement to the vestibule ends of the car and are now complete, which included replacing of the steel angle supports to the Headcorn end, which had become corroded. The timberwork to the domed ends of the roof were completely replaced together with some minor repairs to the roof boarding.

With the Pullmans out of action we have had to use the two Maunsell NBO`s on the dining train for the start of the season. However, at the beginning of April we had a wedding reception planned so THEODORA had to be usable. In recent years we have been sealing any new external woodwork with a two part resin manufactured by West Systems (105 epoxy resin) in an attempt to delay any future decay. Time will tell if it works but to date there have been no negative reactions. The new timberwork to the ends were given two coats of resin over the bare mahogany wood which looked like a high gloss varnish finish. THEODORA was then moved into the scaffolding bay to have the roof canvas fitted and painted. The cantrail mouldings were fitted and the roof extractor installed, and THEODORA was ready to go to the wedding. A safety run took place on the Saturday to check out the vehicle and to run in the new white metal bearings ready for the paying guests on the Sunday. In the following week THEODORA was then returned to the C & W shed to complete the works of painting and lining to the vestibule ends, fitting the roof vents and rain strips.

In the December2018 report we advised that one of the original marquetry panels had been restored by Wheathills of Derby. This first panel has now been installed in the car and allows our customers a glimpse of what THEODORA will look like when all the panels have been restored. It’s an exciting prospect.

It is anticipated that THEODORA will be back in service by the 27th April 2019.

Mark 1 Restaurant Unclassified (RU) E1987.

The Railway made the decision to seek quotation for this vehicle to be restored to working order off the railway as this could be carried much quicker than it would be in our own shed. A specification was drawn up and quotations sort from outside Contractors, at the same time an application was made for a grant towards the costs. Quotations were received with the cost in the region of £185000.00. We are pleased to advise that our grant application has been favorably considered and we await confirmation. This will of course leave us to match fund the balance of the cost which will be in excess of £100000.00. Some funds have been made available but will still leave us short. Fund raising for the balance of the cost will commence on the 10th March 2019. This vehicle is urgently required as a replacement for DIANA which will require a major overhaul in the near future.

Pullman Car ARIES.

There is still nothing positive to report on ARIES, but we are still pushing for action but at the present time the C & W shed has a full workload keeping up with restoration of the railways Mark 1 stock.

Swanage Railways CAR No. 14 Two Phase Restoration - Robert Patterson.

Car No. 14 went away in June 2018 for an anticipated 12-week restoration, this became delayed and protracted and it was delivered back in part restored state in mid-December 2018 just in time for the Christmas Belle services.

On February 1st, 2018 CAR No. 14 departed the Swanage Railway for Ramparts workshop. Returning to the Swanage Railway on Tuesday March 12th, in essence an external restoration (interior is largely untouched) with large parts of the match boarding having been replaced and rotting window frames replaced or made good, in particular the oval windows in the bar area were in a bad state.

Revised guttering has been installed and remedial work on the roof, the underframe was also refurbished. The additional costs came from substantive rebuilding of the vestibule area and the external re-painting.

Re- Special Edition No. 16 - Bachmann Branchline - ‘00’ Gauge Pullman Models 2005 to 2019.

Nicolas Wheatley writes.

Many thanks for your email with its attachment of the document on 00 scale Bachmann Pullman models. As ever, it was full of good information and it filled some gaps in my knowledge. However, I was a bit surprised that you didn't mention a model that Bachmann made for their Collectors Club of the Mark 1 brake vehicle used by SLOA and painted by them into umber and cream livery to match the Mark 1 Pullman cars operated by SLOA at the time. Alas this model, which is no longer available and in addition they made a N Gauge version too, (also no longer available).

The real coach was probably used many times on the mainline but one particular use was of some significance. This was in the short train, of only two vehicles, hauled by 4472 Flying Scotsman, that took HM The Queen Mother to North Woolwich in 1984.

You may know about this model and have decided not to include it in your Special Edition as it was not built as a Pullman car, but to modellers of Mark 1 Pullman trains in the 1980s this would be an authentic vehicle to include.

BR MK1 BCK Coach “Car No. 355” SLOA Pullman Livery - Code: 39-225K - OO scale Pullman Coach

PULLMAN - Edition No.48 - May & June 2019 “Information is for sharing and not gathering dust” Page 43 of 68

The Bachman Branchline OO scale BR Mark 1 Brake Corridor Composite (BCK) coach is decorated in the attractive Pullman Umber and Cream livery as Car No. 355 that operated as part of the SLOA charter rake from the early 1980s onwards. The Steam Locomotive Operators Association (SLOA) was formed in 1975 to bring together steam locomotive owners and groups who wished to run on the main line. The SLOA recognised that the number of vacuum braked and steam heated coaches were in decline in the 1970s so in 1981, in order to preserve steam haulage on the main line, they purchased a rake of eight 1960 built Metropolitan Cammell Mark 1 Pullman vehicles. Two standard BR Mark 1 Brake Corridor Composite (BCK) vehicles were also sourced to provide the necessary guards’ accommodation. SLOA quickly realised that to operate, hire and maintain these vehicles was a fully commercial venture and so in 1984 the vehicles were handed over to a company set-up for this purpose, Pullman Rail. The SLOA charter rake was formed of Parlour Second (SP) vehicles as-well as Bar Second (BSP) ‘The Hadrian Bar’ and the two Mark 1 BCKs. Both types of Pullman vehicle have featured in the Graham Farish (N) and Bachmann Branchline (OO) range with the SP appearing in a number of guises over the years, therefore the introduction of our new brake coach allows modellers in either scale to create an authentic SLOA rake using ready to run models for the first time. Car No. 355 was one of 16 vehicles built by BR Swindon Works to diagram 171 as part of lot 30669. With construction completed in 1962, the coach was out-shopped as No. M21249 for operation on the Region. SLOA purchased the vehicle in 1981 when it received the running number 99355 under TOPS. The second BCK required for the charter rake was purchased by the in 1981 and loaned to the SLOA before being purchased by Pullman Rail in 1984. The coach remains in service today and is now used as a support coach for the new-build A1 Pacific locomotive ‘Tornado’.

Wagon Lits Pullman No. 4161 - Pat O’Connor.

©Pat O’Connor.

On April 5th, I was in Switzerland and on the platform of the railway station at Yverdon-les-Bains awaiting a train for Zurich. I had a chance encounter with Wagon Lits Pullman 4161 and its accompanying locomotive BLS No 208.

©Pat O’Connor.

The images show No 4161, a 'Cote d'Azur' Pullman built in 1929 and electric locomotive BLS Ae 6/8 No 208 constructed circa 1940.

©Pat O’Connor.

As can be seen, the Pullman is in rather shabby condition, but the locomotive still looks very smart and stylish.'

Additional Information from Brendan Martin – Editor of Amis des Wagons-Lits Newsletter.

WSP 4161 is certainly a bit of a mystery – Chris Elliott and I were first contacted about the movement of 4161 in eastern France on 5th April following a query from a photographer’s submission to “Today’s Railways – Europe’. Since David Haydock’s original enquiry which we concluded was WSP 4161, the car’s previous owner, according to my data, Swisstrains (Christophe + Caroline Bachmann) which had been very quiet and I suspected had gone-under. The destination of the car hauled by the red 67613 I suspected was either Clermont Ferrand (ie. SNCF/Orient Express project) or going to TechniService Perigord for museum restoration, or even on to CF Vendee.

A couple of days ago I was checking the details of the cars at AJECTA - Longueville which included an unrestored WL Lx 3519 that has been there for about 20 years.

For info, my database comments were:

"RB" #25 p6; IRPS Longueville 20101002 - moved to Paris area going to Oignies - Duhamel also owns 2756 4138 1253; Sold by AJECTA to Duhamel - 2009-2010?; Seen Longueville - poor condition - in bushes!; IRPS Jrnl#12p23 reported sold to Christophe/Caroline Bachmann - Swisstrains details awaited; Confirmed at Longueville CIWL Lx 3519 Classé MH (1993) - B.Neveux ; One concludes that the sale failed which gave more support to the theory that Swisstrains was not assembling its own Orient Express (originally reported by J- M. Thill at Simpelfeld 2012).

This morning’s message from TB/Pat O’Connor, and the excellent photos opens a new possibility. A web search of Swisstrains+Bachmann showed that Swisstrains is still around and owns a large fleet of old SBB and BLS locos including BLS 208 as seen by Pat O’Connor on 5th April running through Yverdon-les-Bains (not far from Vallorbe ) hauling 4161. This was the same date as Pierre Julien saw and photographed the car on the Dennevy-Chagny-Nevers line.

PULLMAN - Edition No.48 - May & June 2019 “Information is for sharing and not gathering dust” Page 48 of 68

Therefore, I suspect she was en route for some serious treatment and would probably return to Switzerland. Swisstrain would seem to have a few (3?) old open 2nd class cars – not really tour material. Bachmann’s loco collection (15-20) was largely inherited from his late father-in-law and is based at Payerne, some 28 Km from Yverdon-les-Bains.

Given that Swisstrains provide the haulage for several operators of specials in Switzerland including Prestige Continental Express, with whom Christophe Bachmann appears to have a very close connexion, one wonders if WSP 4161 is destined to join PCE’s fleet which includes exCIWL MU type sleeper converted into a service/staff car. PCE cars are garaged in the SBB servicing facilities at close to Basel Hbf. The above

I hope you can follow the above – clearly, we need someone to write an accurate history of NIOE; from Alby Glatt and friends at CIWL Atelier Milano through to the current Orient Express project of the SNCF.

Newsletter No. 47 - Text Errors & Omission.

Unusually, I have noticed a few errors, which I hope you will not mind my pointing out:-

1. Pages 6 and 10 - should MINERA (II) not read MINERVA (II)?

2. Page 24 - The caption does not tell the whole story; this engine was built as NER Class D 4-4-4T No. 1531 in 1920, LNER Class H1, and rebuilt as Class A8 4-6-2T in Feb. 1934.

3. Page 36 - The second paragraph 'meet up' does not make sense - the 'up' is redundant.

4. Page 38 - The caption - stewards wait not 'await' to welcome passengers.

My thanks to George for advising of the errors and omission as detailed above. ------

Pullman at Ilfracombe North Devon.

I have a small question, other than the Devon Belle, did Pullman trains ever run to Ilfracombe? The reason I ask is I was filming in the area in the 1960’s and got shot of a train that looked like a Pullman, I am sure that there were table lamps on the table, the train was leaving Ilfracombe Railway station it was after breakfast between 9 o’clock and 10 o’clock; but as it was such a long time ago my memories are rather faded and as I no longer have the film I cannot check it out and looking at my numerous books of the area I, as yet, have not found any Pullman train calling at Ilfracombe. I wondered if you could help. PULLMAN - Edition No.48 - May & June 2019 “Information is for sharing and not gathering dust” Page 51 of 68

In response to your query with regard to a Pullman train at Ilfracombe in the 1960’s. Currently the only known working of a Pullman formation into Ilfracombe long after the ending of the “Devon Belle” was on October 19th, 1963 “The Western Belle”. I attach a copy of the article that appeared within the newsletter.

Re-Pullman at Ilfracombe North Devon

Thank you for your email, the enclosed article was fascinating. I did not realise that I was in Ilfracombe In October, I was usually there in June/July it also answers the question why it was necessary to eventually edit the scene from the film, as it was late on an October afternoon the lighting would be poor and therefore the shot would not be very good; so you have actually answered two questions. Many thanks for your help in this matter it was great. ------

Pullman Car Services-Archive - Information Request.

On February 28th, I received an E-Mail from Tony Harker with four questions relating to seeking information on the both Pullman Supply Cars and Curtains.

Question.

1. In Pullman in Europe, George Behrend mentions in the table at the back, a number of cars were rebuilt into "Supply Cars". He also mentions earlier that these cars had their seats removed and were used to serve meals to passengers accommodated in ordinary railway vehicles.

In Response - Supply Cars.

I reviewed information in print held within the PCS-Archive. The only references I can find being as you have detailed with “Pullman in Europe”.

Question.

2. What form did these cars take - did they still retain their external appearance.

In Response - External Appearance.

I have only been able to source one photograph of a “Supply Car” this being “ALBATROSS” and courtesy of Doug Lindsay.

Although “ALBATROSS” retains the Pullman coat of arms (crest) and name on the lower panels, you will note the PULLMAN lettering normally located above the windows on the cant rail has only the three of the smaller emblems.

Question.

3. In which trains where they used.

In Response - Service Allocations.

Currently I have been unable to identify any services to which any “Supply Cars” where allocated to.

Question.

4. Looking at early photos of Pullman car interiors, no curtains are visible only blinds, when did curtains begin to be fitted.”

Brighton Belle Cars at Stewarts Lane April 2019 - F.Pragnell & J.Clark.

On April 30th, 1972 the Brighton Belle Service ended in a blaze of publicity, a mere 47 years later two of the remaining five Motor Brake Parlour cars CAR No. 92 & 93 had their tarpaulin covers removed at the Depot at Stewarts Lane.

Circa 2005 both cars were moved to Ostend for restoration as Driving Trailers for use with the British Pullman car rake, which would eliminate the need for the two-locomotive requirement for the movements to and from Stewarts Lane to Victoria Station. Work had commenced on both cars, which was not completed as the Engineering Company contracted to undertake the conversion ceased trading. The cars returned to Stewarts Lane and were tarpaulin covered.

‘FLYING SCOTSMAN’ AND OBSERVATION CAR No. 14 RE-UNITED AT THE SWANAGE RAILWAY.

Robert Patterson.

March 23rd With A3 Pacific No. 60103 Flying Scotsman hauling the six coaches and CAR No.14.

For 20 days during March - April the Swanage Railway successfully bid to host ‘Flying Scotsman’ from the NRM. This provided the first opportunity since 1972 to re-unite the famous locomotive with observation CAR No. 14 which was purchased by Alan Pegler to accompany the famous locomotive as part of the trade train that ran in the States between 1969 - 1972.

When purchased in 1968 from the Scottish region the former Devon Belle observation car was converted to become a mock English pub called the “Fireman’s Rest”. In essence the fixed Pullman tub seats were all removed and the original ‘art deco’ bar was replaced by a mock English tavern by a team of shop fitters from West London.

It was used to entertain businessmen, the press and VIP’s during its tour across the States. After the Scotsman operation was declared bankrupt in 1972 the observation car became a static bar in Chestnut Avenue in San Francisco. It was repatriated to the Swanage Railway in 2007.

The Swanage Railway effectively promoted the visit of ‘Scotsman’ as celebrating the 50th anniversary of the start of the USA tour and as such put CAR No. 14 onto key publicity. From 22nd - 26th March Flying Scotsman worked 5 trains per day between Swanage and Norden. CAR No. 14 was offered with a premium experience with a mix of champagne breakfasts, canapes and afternoon tea. Despite the ‘premium price’ of £85 - £95 per seat, the offer caught the public’s imagination and within 3 days of going on sale all seats had been sold. (Overall over the 5 days the complete seven coach consist achieved 97% occupancy.)

The USA anniversary theme was further enhanced by Alan Peglers daughter - Penny, accepting an invitation to attend the first and last trains of the 5 days - flying in specially from her home in Portugal. Penny had accompanied the train in the USA in 1971 with her father when she was a teenager. The chain reaction of this was to catch the imagination of the media with BBC Breakfast performing an outside broadcast from Swanage Station on the first morning. This included a live interview with Penny in the observation car (never mind the presenter got most of the facts on CAR No. 14 wrong!) - and not forgetting a walk on part from yours truly.

March 22nd, Swanage Station with A3 Pacific No. 60103 Flying Scotsman moving forward to couple-up with CAR No.14.

This was the biggest event organised at Swanage and was a phenomenal success. All trains ran to time, visitor numbers boomed (and the roads gridlocked over the weekend). In terms of the observation car passenger reaction was extremely positive – as evidenced from the glowing TripAdvisor postings. Passengers particularly liked their departing “goodie bags” comprising one of the NRM “Devon Belle” poster mugs together with a souvenir booklet on the history of CAR No. 14

For the final 15 days of Scotsman’s visit it went on display in light steam at Corfe Castle accompanied by CAR No. 14. Visitors paid £7.50 for the privilege of a visit in the cab , a walk through the corridor tender into Car 14 where there was an exhibition on the Car , this included the original bell that had been used by Scotsman in the States, leant by Jim Baldwin of ‘Eagle Eye’ productions. Unsurprisingly all visitor slots were sold out over the 15 days.

Through Penny and also a lady who was part of the support group in the first stage of the USA tour it was fascinating to gain anecdotes over how CAR No. 14 was used in the States. It was certainly the ‘party coach’ during the tour with highlights being a party chartered by Jackie Stewart when it was in Canada and a further party hosted by Tom Jones when in San Francisco. We also found that when it was static in San Francisco it was regularly used by the cast of “The Streets of San Francisco” after a day’s filming.

So, the end result for CAR No. 14?

The car has received tremendous publicity and now looks in superb condition having been externally reconditioned by Ramparts over the winter. Over the 5 days it grossed over £50,000 in income (net profit is commercially confidential to Swanage!) We have also trialled new catering products with champagne breakfasts and afternoon teas complete with new ‘Pullman’ branded crockery. We will be repeating the afternoon tea offer at selected periods during the year and, of course, our unique ‘Christmas Belle’ product will continue.
