US, ISRAELI MILITARY LAUNCH MONTH-LONG JOINT MILITARY DRILL JUNIPER COBRA 2018

 The US and Israeli military have launched a month-long joint military drill that simulates a missile attack on Israel. It is the ninth Cobra exercise that has taken place.  The "Juniper Cobra 2018" is the largest dill of its kind. It was jointly held by the Israeli military and the US European Command (USEUCOM).  As part of the exercise, some 2,500 US troops routinely based in Europe were deployed in Israel as well as about 2,000 Israeli Aerial Defence troops, logistics units, medical forces and other Israel Defence Forces (IDF) units.  The exercise simulates a scenario in which Israel is being attacked on several fronts, including by precision-guided ballistic missiles from Iran.

MAHARASHTRA GOVT. TO MAKE SALE OF GUTKA A NON-BAILABLE OFFENCE

 The government announced that sale of gutka, banned in the state, would be made a non-bailable offence. Further, the punishment for trying to sell the banned product will also be enhanced to three years in prison.  Currently the sale of gutka is a bailable offence with a punishment of a maximum of six months in prison. Maharashtra has the highest number of youth falling prey to cancer due to chewing of gutka.  Minister of State for FDA Madan Yerawar, demanded inquiry into continuing sale of gutka despite the ban. State has seized gutka worth 114.2 crore rupees in last five years.

INDIA FINISH WITH THREE GOLD, TWO BRONZE IN ASIAN ARCHERY

 Indian junior archers bagged three gold and two bronze medals in Asia Cup Archery Stage 1 campaign in Bangkok.  Promila Daimary won second individual gold medal for as she defeated Natalia Erdynieva of Russia 7-3 in the women's recurve individual. Indian trio of Akash, Gora Ho and Gaurav Lambe defeated Mongolian rivals 27-26 in the tie-breaker to clinch the third gold.  Muskan also ended up pocketing a second medal in the form of bronze when she along with Divya Dhayal and Mrinal Hiwrale defeated their Indonesian opponents 227-221 in the third-place playoff.  In the semifinals, India lost to Vietanam 224-227.

BALKRISHNA DOSHI WINS PRITZKER PRIZE OF ARCHITECTURE

 Indian architect Balkrishna Doshi, has won the prestigious Pritzker Prize, the prize is considered architecture's Nobel equivalent. He is the 45th Pritzker laureate and the first from India.  Balkrishna Doshi: The 90-year-old Doshi -- one of the last living architects to have apprenticed with the Franco-Swiss trailblazer Le Corbusier -- distinguished his work by committing to sustainable architecture and inexpensive housing, bringing modernist design to an India still rooted in traditionalism.

BIPLAB KUMAR DEB SWORN-IN AS CHIEF MINISTER OF TRIPURA

 Tripura gets a new government with BJP's Biplab Kumar Deb being sworn-in as the new chief Minister of the state.  BJP received a historic mandate in the polls held last month, winning 35 out of 59 seats and its ally, Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura (IPFT), bagging 8 seats.  Every elected member will work together for the betterment of Tripura. Manik Sarkar, who has ruled the state for 20 years, was also present at the swearing-in ceremony.

DONALD TRUMP SIGNS SWEEPING TARIFF ORDER

 US President Donald Trump signs two proclamations that impose 25 per cent tariff on imported steel and 10 per cent on aluminium.  The contentious tariffs, which will come into effect in 15 days, primarily targets the massive steel and aluminium dumping by China. Only two countries - Canada and Mexico - have been exempted from the new import tariff.  Other countries would have to negotiate with US Trade Representatives (USTR) if they want exemptions from the steel and aluminium import tariff.  Trump signed the proclamations in presence of steel workers from Pennsylvania, Vice President Mike Pence, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross, United States Trade Representative Robert E Lighthizer and economist Peter Navarro, architect of his steel and aluminium policy.

INDIA-CHINA BILATERAL TRADE HITS HISTORIC HIGH OF USD 84.44 BLN IN 2017

 The India-China bilateral trade has reached USD 84.44 billion last year, an historic high notwithstanding bilateral tensions over a host of issues including the Doklam standoff.  The bilateral trade in 2017 rose by 18.63 per cent year-on-year to reach USD 84.44 billion. RBI SLAPS RS 40 LAKH PENALTY ON SBI FOR FLOUTING FAKE NOTE NORMS

 Reserve Bank of India (RBI) imposed Rs40 lakh penalty on State Bank of India (SBI) for not following the central bank’s rules on detection and impounding of counterfeit currency notes.  The RBI has found deficiencies on SBI’s part in regulatory compliance with counterfeit note norms. The action is not intended to pronounce upon the validity of any transaction or agreement entered into by the bank with its customers.  The regulator had carried out inspection of currency chests of two branches of the country’s largest lender and noticed violation of its instructions issued on the detection and impounding of counterfeit notes.
