Kol Nidre is translated to mean “All Vows.” Chai-Five: 5 Fun Facts about the On Yom Kippur evening, in synagogues all over the world (and High Holidays by Neil Diamond in “The Jazz Singer”) the Kol Nidre prayer is chanted 3 times. This prayer cancels any oaths that were Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur are known as the High Holidays made directly with God in the prior year so that we can start and are sometimes referred to as the Days of Awe. This 10- over and have a clean slate. For example, if you promised to day period, which begins this year at sundown on September do a better job at controlling your temper, and then continued 29 and continues through Yom Kippur on October 9, is a to lose it repeatedly over the past year, you will annul that time of personal reflection, family gathering, and communal oath so that you aren’t starting the new year with that same engagement for Jews throughout the world. As an inclusively broken promise in place. Kol Nidre does not, however, cancel Jewish community center that welcomes people with varying out promises made with other people. To make peace with degrees of knowledge on Jewish holidays, we put together others, you need to seek forgiveness directly. some fun information you may or may not know about the High Holidays to get you to start thinking about the holiday season. 5. Eating a big meal before you fast is not the best idea. Traditionally, the meal eaten before sundown on Erev Yom 1. The ‘80s are back! Kippur is large and festive. However, eating extra food — On Rosh Hashanah, we will end the Hebrew year 5779 and particularly in one last-minute feast — will not keep you going begin the year 5780. Does this mean you should dust off your for 24 hours. Nutritionists suggest eating small amounts of neon legwarmers and go get a perm? Only you can decide, carbohydrates (bread, potato, rice, pasta), some protein like but since high-waist jeans and fanny packs are already back, fish or chicken, and fruit before beginning your fast on Yom anything can happen. Kippur. 2. Rosh Hashanah is only 1 of 4 Jewish New Years on the Hebrew calendar. Rosh Hashanah is literally translated to mean the head of the year. But there are three more dates on the Hebrew calendar that are considered new years as well. In the Book of Exodus, the beginning of the year was set as the 1st of Nisan, the month in spring that contains Passover. Jewish tradition also marks Tu Bishvat, the 15th day of the Hebrew month of Shevat, as the new year for trees and the 1st of Elul, usually in late summer, as the new year for the tithing of animals. 3. A shofar doesn’t always smell so good. The key commandment of Rosh Hashanah is to hear the sounding of the shofar. A shofar is an instrument made out of an actual ram’s horn, so it is going to have a certain natural aroma to it. If someone tells you that they can sell you a shofar that doesn’t have any smell, then you are probably not getting a genuine ram’s horn shofar. How can you make a new shofar less stinky? Rinsing it out with a solution of baking soda and vinegar should do the trick.

1 42.347 Dr. Stallbaumer-Beishline Film Review Essay Assignment Holocaust Films: “Imagining the Unimaginable” The average American's most extensive exposure to the Holocaust is through popular filmic presentations on either the "big screen" or television. These forums, as Ilan Avisar points out, must yield “to popular demands and conventional taste to assure commercial success."1 Subsequently, nearing the successful completion of this course means that you know more about the Holocaust than the average American. This assignment encourages you to think critically, given your broadened knowledge base, about how the movie-television industry has treated the subject. Film scholars have grappled with the unique challenge of Holocaust-themed films. Ponder their views as you formulate your own opinions about the films that you select to watch. Annette Insdorff, Indelible Shadows: Film and the Holocaust (1989) "How great a role are films playing in determining contemporary awareness of the Final Solution? . How do you show people being butchered? How much emotion is too much? How will viewers respond to light-hearted moments in the midst of suffering?" (xviii) How do we lead a camera or a pen to penetrate history and create art, as opposed to merely recording events? What are the formal as well as moral responsibilities if we are to understand and communicate the complexities of the Holocaust through its filmic representations? (xv) Ilan Avisar, Screening the Holocaust: Cinema's Images of the Unimaginable (1988) "'Art [including film making] takes the sting out of suffering.'" (viii) The need for popular reception of a film inevitably leads to "melodramatization or trivialization of the subject." (46) Hollywood/American filmmakers' "universalization [using the Holocaust to make statements about contemporary problems] is rooted in specific social concerns that seek to avoid burdening a basically indifferent public with unbearable facts of the Nazi genocide of the Jews.

HONORING TRADITIONS ENGAGING FAMILIES SUPPORTING COMMUNITIES Volume 92, No. 4 • October 2019 • Tishri/Heshvan 5780 Congregational Picnic, Sunday, September 8 From Rabbi This year’s congregational picnic was a fantastic success! Over 160 people of all Jessica ages attended, including members, prospective members and their wonderful fami - Barolsky lies. There were games, a bounce house, tie-dyeing, BBQ, and so much more. Teachers, Rabbi Barolsky, Cantor Barash and our new Director of Lifelong Learning, As we enter the Susan Cosden, were on hand to greet one and all. Many thanks to all of the many month of October, volunteers and our professional staff who helped bring this wonderful event off. We Yom Kippur is on our are already looking forward to next year’s picnic! minds, as we prepare to gather and atone. Hopefully, we have done the hard work of apologizing to one another for the things we did that we wish we hadn’t— or the things we didn’t do and wish we had. When we come together, we turn toward God, apologizing to God for deeds, words, actions, and inactions between ourselves and the Divine. It is an intense day of prayer and fasting. But it is not the holiday that dominates the upcoming month. Instead, that holiday is Sukkot, the seven-day (or eight-day, depending on your background) harvest festival, the holiday of booths. Sukkot begins this year, on Sunday, October 13, in the evening, but our congregational cele - bration starts the night before. On Saturday night, October 12, we will be having a sukkah decorating party (with thanks to Temple Brotherhood for din - ner and flexibility when the staff asked to take a one-year Sukkahmobile hia - tus).
