As this pandemic wears on, Knights of Columbus must be leaders in following the advice of public health-care professionals by wearing facial masks, sanitizing hands, and physical distancing. Your example is important for your children and grandchildren, for your neighbours and friends, and for brother Knights. Thank you to those Knights who have offered to assist the Pastors of your parishes during the careful “re-opening” of churches over the summer months. Each weekend parishioners are returning to church with the reassurance that caring for their safety is the highest priority. Brothers; I trust that your Summer has been both safe and enjoy- able. We are now ready to embark on another fraternal year in what is hoped to be the time when we conquer the COVID-19 global pandemic. Notwithstanding COVID-19, the major issue facing most councils at this time of the year is the submission of per capita fees – both present and future. Allow me a few moments to elaborate. In the upcoming weeks, the financial Secretaries (through the Grand Knights) will be receiving a notice from State Board informing them as to the proposed Ontario plan. The 2020-2021 per capita will be reduced. The amount of which will be announced in late-October. To determine the amount of the reduction, the State Board needs to take into consideration the following: 1. The audited 2019-2020 budget which we expect to present and review in mid-October 2020. 2. The 2019-2020 per capita fees received to date. It is therefore crucial that councils currently in arrears resolve this issue asap. Only then can the State Board offer the greatest savings possible to all councils for 2020-2021. I trust that this fraternal order will rise to the COVID-19 challenge. Councils need to continue their charitable community work and pay their respective per capita dues for 2019-2020. Let us stand together, rejoice in the celebration of Father Michael J. McGivney being declared “Blessed” and help build a stronger future together in 2020-2021. Fraternally

How can we all be a part of this dream? First, we all need to speak, share and communicate the need for New Councils and Round Tables beginning with the MIOs communicating this need to the District Deputies. District Deputies should then include this topic in their reports during the meetings with their respective councils. As we begin this new fraternal year every council should be considering just how priestly vocations will become part of the “Faith Pillar” of their council programming. All of us in attending mass on a regular basis most likely just assume that we will always be greeted by the smiling face of one of our clergy when we reach the church door. To ensure that this will continue to materialize, the Church needs not only our spiritual support, but our monetary support as well. The question that we must ask ourselves surrounds the possibility of physical clergy presence in all of our parishes not being an automatic assumption in the years to come. More and more we are relying on the importation of priests from other countries to serve our parishes as local vocations decline. With this in mind, it is our responsibility as Knights to ensure that this decline does not progress to a point where the situation becomes critical to a point beyond a viable resolution. R.S.V.P. is a program that the Knights of Columbus offers to allow us the opportunity to support our seminarians, the future priests of our parishes, during those years where their financial vulnerability is often critical. Not only does our financial support assist them with the monetary challenges they encounter during their years of study, but it also shows them in a very tangible manner that we as Knights support them in their journey to ordi- nation. We are, and will continue to be there when many of them require our assistance the most. The fact that the Knights of Columbus were there to offer a helping hand will long be remembered when they are the pastors of the parishes that our future councils will be associated with. So, you will quickly see, that the rewards are many in planting the seeds of seminarian support. As we are still going through very difficult times, with money restrictions, the inability to meet in large groups, and even attend Mass. But the needs of the people are still out there even more than ever. Therefore, it is very important that councils budget to purchase at least one Wheelchair and/or somehow do a fundraiser to achieve this goal. With respect to our efforts in Paraguay, I am proud to announce that we have sent the first 20 wheelchairs that the Embassy has requested, and we still are committed to fully fill a shipping container. In Panama the local councils are eagerly awaiting the arrival of the container that we have committed to send to them. They are ready to receive, and distribute the Wheelchairs to those in need as soon as they arrive. We need your support to make these two initiatives happen by June 2021, so please make every effort to support our good work. We now have two requests from Africa for Wheelchairs in Senegal and Nigeria, our work goes on and the requests keep coming in. I know that it is difficult to raise funds and to even keep your councils afloat but I ask that you wherever possible help us to achieve our goals. God Bless and Keep Safe.

With the return to school, it is now time for the councils to contact the Principal of their local schools and invite their students, in grades eight (8) through twelve 12, to participate in the CCEC. For this program to be successful we need the involve- ment of the individual councils to sponsor the local competition and submit the winners in each grade to State for Ontario-wide competition and then on to the international competition. I will not prolong the message in this newsletter, as the details and deadlines have already been sent to the Grand Knights, District Deputies and State Board Officers. Please follow the instructions closely and offer this opportunity to our youth. In addition, this can fulfill the requirement of a “Com- munity” project in the FAITH IN ACTION initiative. As well, you should be aware that the Ontario second and first place submissions in each grade will receive a @200.00 and $100.00 award from Ontario State as well as first place winners being entered in the international competition.

My name is Sean Adams and I am the new chairman of the Substance Abuse Poster contest. The contest is open to elementary and high school students. Submissions must depict the dangers of abusing alcohol or illegal drugs. While this is a noble goal, several circumstances have arisen that has caused this contest to lose popularity in Ontario.

a. Supreme has pulled sponsorship of the contest. b. Ontario Chiefs of Police are proposing legalizing small amounts (-3 g) of drugs for personal use. c. Substance abuse is covered in school in the second term (Feb-June), while the K of C contest is held in the Fall. Teachers will not be interested in participating since the contest does not coincide with the curriculum. I have proposed to the Worth State Deputy a new contest that alines with Faith in Action. It is called the Canadian Heroes Portrait Contest. It is open to elementary students (Gr. 4-6 & 7-8). Contestants will draw a portrait of a person worth of praise from Canada's long and noble history (ex. Chief Joseph Brant, Jeanne Mance, Sgt Tommy Prince and Terry Fox). Along with the portrait, the contestant will include a brief explanation describing how their subject is a Canadian hero.

The fourth degree assembly in Brantford has run this contest for the last six years and it has proven to be popular with our elementary students. It is my hope that this contest can be run province wide.

This year we recommend that councils promote the program by asking their Chancellor to read the monthly meditations and the monthly scriptures found in the Family Fully Alive booklet as part of their general meeting. This will help to add a spiritual aspect to your meetings. This will take between 5 to 7 minutes and will show your members how easy the program is to do. Make sure that you have spare booklets available for the members and encourage them to bring them home so they can do the program with their family. If you do this, you will get two credits under the Family category. It is that easy! So why not give it a try. Widows Program – Christmas Poinsettia The new Widows Poinsettia program is designed to show the family of our deceased members that we have not forgotten their contribution to the Knights and our Catholic community and to show that we still care about them and that they remain a part of our council family. The program requires your council to purchase Poinsettias and Christmas cards for the widow from your council. Members will then contact the widow and arrange to deliver the Poinsettia and the Christmas card. To be successful you will need to maintain a list of Widows from your council and requires a few members to contact and visit the widows. By delivering a Poinsettia with a Christmas card, it will show our Widows and their family that we still care. Let’s keep our widows in our hearts and in our prayers. During this Christmas season, prepare to participate in the Widows program. It is an easy program to implement and make a difference. Usually, will cost the council less than $100. This could also be an excellent recruiting tool. The Family members can see first hand that we still remember the contribution of their father.

Deceased Members Headstone Cleaning and Prayer Program Nothing is more comforting to a widow of a brother knight than knights cleaning the headstones of their deceased husband and praying together for the repose of his soul. Overgrowth of grass and weeds is common around headstones and it is a wonderful gesture to clean around the headstones of deceased knights. Planning a day to pray for our deceased knights is a foundational obligation and a promise to the widows in the Order. These two actions are fondly appreciated by the widows of our departed knights. Placing a KofC flag at the headstones identifies to other visitors in the cemetery that knights continue to remember our deceased brother knights and we honor them today.
