Compelling, but IncompleteBy Amy ScheuermanThe plot of this story is excellent and compelling, as are the characters. However, as with many of Sherwood Smith's books, you feel that you've been dropped into the middle of town without a map. Many of the characters have backstories that are only alluded to, because they exist in unpublished books or the vast mythology of Sartorias-deles that still exists mainly in Smith's mind. That said, the story of a youth trying to come to terms with the knowledge that she is a ruler now responsible for an entire nation, both the people and the traditions, is played out in wonderfully intimate and thoughtful detail.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Five StarsBy ShoeI loved this book. Another great look at the Sartorias-deles world.2 of 3 people found the following review helpful. okay book.By CustomerThis wasn't Sherwood Smith's best work, nor was it her worst. It was middling. Regardles, it was still a fun read. In this sequel to The Spy Princess, Lilah, newly made a princess, teams up with Atan, the hidden princess of the oldest country in the world, Sartor, to free the kingdom from a century of enchantment. Capture, escape, a forest beyond time, ancient beings, civilizations secreted in caves, and a deadly enemy await the girls. Atan knows that if she survives, the challenges facing a fifteen-year-old queen are only beginning. Ted Zaleski Great Readers, Great Leaders We are delighted to introduce the frst in a series of bookmarks featuring books recommended by great readers and leaders in Carroll County. Our frst great reader is Ted Zaleski, Carroll County Director of Management and Budget. Ted’s Bio A lifelong learner, Ted regularly read books to his children. One night his daughter asked him, “Why are we always reading books about boys?” Ted notes, “Chastened by my daughter’s question I set out to fnd good books about girls. It was harder than I expected. Tey were out there, but I had to dig for them. I began to wonder how many girls were being fed a diet of books about boys by default. It occurred to me that other parents might be interested in the same kind of books I was looking for.” Tis led Ted to write, “Making Teir Own Choices: Strong Female Characters in Fantasy Literature - One Hundred Books for Late Elementary to High School Readers.” In his thesis, Ted also explored the idea of strong female characters, the roles they play and why he believes we need them. He also provided a brief history of fantasy literature, and the important role that fantasy fction can play in shaping the worldview of young readers. We are honored that Ted allowed us to share his work by creating an annotated bookmark listing 10 of his favorite books from his list of 100. Please stop by any CCPL branch to pick up a bookmark. A complete list of all 100 titles on Ted’s list is attached.
