DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION FEDERAL HIOHWAV ADMINISTRATION £ JACKSON,KENTUCKY - A RESOURCE PROHLE Jackson, tbe county seat of Breathitt County, is located in the Eastern Kentucky Coal Field. The city's estimated 1994 population was 2,819. Jackson is located 86 miles southeast of Lexington, Kentucky; 160 miles southeast of Louisville, Kentucky; 157 miles southeast of Cincinnati, Ohio; and 184 miles north of Knoxville, Tennessee. Breathitt County covers a total land area of 495 square miles. The topography of Breathitt County is characterized by irregular ridges and deep, v-shaped valleys. Breathitt County had an estimated 1994 population of 15,384. The Econoinic Framework - The total number of Breathitt County residents employed in 1995 averaged 4,196. Manufacturing firms in the county reported 127 employees; wholesale and retail trade provided 898jobs; 851 people were employed in service occupations; state and local government accounted for 824 employees; contract construction firms provided 64jobs; and 375 people were employed by mining and quarrying operations. Labor Supply - There is a current estimated labor supply of 19,867 persons available for industrial jobs m the labor market area. In addition, from 1998 through 2002, 7,875 young persons in the area will become 18 years of age and potentially available for industrial jobs. Transportation - Jackson is served directly by Kentucky Highways 15, 30, and 52, all AAA-rated trucking hi^ways. The Mountain Parkway, a multi-lane highway, is accessible 21 miles northwest. The Daniel Boone Parkway, a multi-lane toll road, is accessible 28 miles southeast. Interstate and/or intrastate trucking service is provided by twelve firms. Main line rail service is provided to Jackson by CSX Transportation. The nearest scheduled commercial airline service is available at Blue Grass Airport near Lexington, 90 miles northwest of Jackson. Local airport facilities include the Julian Carroll Airport, five miles east of Jackson, and the Wendell H. Ford Regional Airport, 17 miles southeast of Jackson. Power and Fuel - Electric power is provided to Jackson and portions of Breathitt County by American Electric Power. Breathitt County is also served by the Licking Valley Rural Electric Cooperative Corporation. Natural gas service is provided by Public Gas Company. Education - Primary and secondary education is provided to Jackson and Breathitt County by the Jackson Independent School System and the Breathitt County School System. Lees College Campus of Hazard Community College is a two-year, coeducational campus located in Jackson. In addition, 12 other institutions of higher learning are located within 90 miles of Jackson. Vocational training facilities are available at the Breathitt County Area Technology Center in Jackson, and at the Hazard Regional Technology Center, 32 miles southeast of Jackson. Eaglin retired on December 30, 2004 and the 13th president, Dr. Wayne D. Andrews took office on January 1, 2005. A formal investiture ceremony for Dr. Andrews was held on May 13, 2005. Since Dr. Eaglin chose not to have a ceremony when he took office in 1992, this was the first formal ceremony since the inauguration of Dr. C. Nelson Grote in 1987. E D U V O L U M E 1 2 , I S S U E 3 M A Y , 2 0 1 8 Welcome from the Chair aculty and staff in the nursing department had a busy and productive spring 2018 F semester! Several recruitment events were coordinated with Morehead State University’s (MSU) Enrollment Services Department and with several of our community partners. On May 9 the Bullitt County Advanced Science and Math students were welcomed to the Department of Nursing. Forty-five freshman and sophomore students in the Advanced Science and Math track at Bullitt county HS along with two teachers were actively involved in “hands-on” activities in the clinical laboratories. Students learned about assessing patients and were involved with mannequins to perform some advanced Dr. Lynn C. Parsons cardiac life support (ACLS) interventions. Bullitt County High School teachers said that Department Chair the students enjoyed the experience-perhaps too much! The health-related departments of Biology/Chemistry, Kinesiology/Health & Imaging Sciences. Nursing and Psychology participated in the 2nd Career Fair in collaboration with MSUs Enrollment Services. Clinical agencies need health care providers in all disciplines and counselors are needed in the prison systems. The Department of Nursing has a 100% job placement rate for students who seek employment. This spring 2018 semester, we welcomed Dr. Shannon Smith-Stephens in a full-time faculty position. Dr. Smith-Stephens transferred from MSU’s Counseling and Health Services where she had practiced since 2011.
