Inthelastanxioushoursbefor etheProphetJosephSmithleftfor CarthageinJune1844,hiswifeEmmaaskedforablessing.Unable tograntherwishatthetime,Josephinstructedhertowriteout“the desiresofherheart”andhewouldconfirmtheblessingbyhissigna- tureuponhisreturn.Amongthedesiressheexpressedinhershort, self-inscribedblessingwasherferventwish“tohonorandrespectmy husbandasmyhead,evertoliveinhisconfidenceandbyactingin unisonwithhimretaintheplacewhichGodhasgivenmebyhis side.”1 WhatunspokenthoughtsmovedEmmaSmithtowritethose words?CouldshehavebeenaffirmingherbeliefthatGodhadcalled hertobethewifeandcompanionofalatter-dayprophet?Mightshe havebeenthinkingoftheor dinancesshehadreceivedwithhimin 1843,whichpromisedherexaltationandaplacebyhissideeter - nally?Or,aftermorethanayearofanguishingovertheprincipleof pluralmarriage,wasEmmafinallyacknowledgingthatonlybyact - inginconcertwithJoseph,evenonthisdivisiveissue,couldsheful- filltherevelationgiventoherfourteenyearsearlierthroughher prophet-husband?

Emma’sself-written1844blessing,ofwhichthequotedpassageis onlyapart,inmanywaysisacompanionpiecetotherevelationshe receivedin1830,whichwascodifiedasDoctrineandCovenants25. Eachofthesetwospiritualdocumentsisbetterunderstoodinr ela- tiontotheother.Theenduringinfluenceofthe1830r evelationto Emmaisevidentinthe1844blessing,whichcarriesstrongechoesof theLord’swordstoherfourteenyearsearlier.Thelaterblessingillu- minatesnotonlytheimpor tanceandrealityofthe1830r evelation inEmma’slifebutalsothetimelessanduniversalqualityofits content. DoctrineandCovenants25haslongbeenreadprimarilyasarev- elationcommissioningahymnbookforthenewlyorganizedChurch. Inrecentyearsmoreattentionhasbeengiventother evelation’s injunctiontoEmma“toexpounddoctrineandexhor tthechurch” andtodefineEmma’sroleasan“electlady.”2 Lessexaminedhave beenitspointsofuniversalapplicationanditscor relationwiththe 1844blessing,whichthispaperwilladdress. Thissacred,personalcommunicationembodieselementsofalong traditionofwomen’spersonaltheophanies.Datingbacktothe eleventhcentury,theirspiritualautobiographiesrecordthesesacred moments.Someofthemr ecountstrikingreligiousawakeningsora newlyquickenedsenseofGod’soverarchingloveemergingfroma varietyofspiritualmanifestations.Theseincludevisionsoflightin whichGod’spresenceisunmistakablyfeltandspiritualdoubtsar e resolved.3Somerecountlongperiodsofspiritualstr uggleandstudy leadingto“adivinechange”andadiscer nment“ofthefullnessof God”andHisdivinepowerinallthings.4 Onewoman,afterlivinga lifeofpleasureandluxury,feltherheartunaccountablypierced“bya suddenandimmenseloveofGod”whichdr ewherawayfromher formerlifeandsetheronapathoftotalreligiousdevotionmanifest byherservicetothesick.5 Aneighteenth-centuryAmericanwoman, SarahPierrepont,leftnoaccountofamiraculousvisionorsudden revelation,butshewroteofoccasionswhentheSpiritseemedto engulfherandshebaskedin“aglowofdivinelove”whichcame from“theheartofChristinto[her]hear tinaconstantstream,or penciloflight.”6 Similarexperiences,recordedbyearlyLatter-daySaintwomenin theirdiariesandjournals,alsofallwithinthistradition,thepatter n 1286SperryTreasurylive7/28/046:05PMPage119

ofspiritualenlightenmentoftenthesame.Forinstance,afterweeks offerventprayertobeledtothetr uth,ElizabethAnnWhitneyone nightfeltherselfenvelopedinthemidstofacloudfr omwhicha voicespoke,saying,“PreparetoreceivethewordoftheLord,foritis coming.”ShortlythereafterParleyP.Prattbroughtherthegospel messageandshewasbaptized,becomingoneoftheearliestandmost faithfulmembersoftheChurch.7 Inalightthatilluminatedher mindasshereceivedahealingblessing,JaneSnyderRichar ds“saw asplainlyasifabookwasopenedbeforemewithitwritteninit,my needofbaptism,ifChristwhowassinlessneededtobebaptized shouldIholdmyselfasbetterthanHe.”8 ElizaR.Snow,onthenight followingherbaptism,asshelaterr ecorded,feltan“indescribable, tangiblesensation”thatfilledherwithan“inexpressiblehappiness” asshesawinavisionabrilliantlightfromacandleblazingoverher feetatthefootofherbed,whichsignified,shelearnedinthevision, that“thelampofintelligenceshallbelightedoveryourpath.” 9And MaryGibbsBigelow,anotherearlyconvert,sickandbedridden, thinkingshewassoontodie,r eceivedavisioninwhichtheSavior promisedherpeace,health,andlifelongenoughtocompletethe workshewasstilltodo.10 Suchheavenlymanifestationsmovedtheir recipientstoconversionorconfirmationoftheirfaithandtolivesof serviceanddevotiontoChrist. 11 Emma’srevelationsimilarlycon- firmedheracceptancebyGodandshowedherthewaytoservicein Hiskingdom. Butthe1830revelationforEmmawasdifferentfromtheseother women’spersonalcommunicationsfromtheheavens.Precedingthe introductionofpatriarchalblessingsintheChurchbythreeyears,its formandcontentwereverymuchtheirprototype.Itwasreceived throughanintermediary,itdeclaredtoEmmathatshewasoneof theelect,oroftheAbrahamiccovenantandlineage, 12 andits promisesandforetellingswereconditionalonherfaithandobedi - ence.Why,then,wemightask,wasthisindividualspiritualguide includedinabookofscriptureforallLatter-daySaints? Theanswermightpossiblylieinitsdistinctivenessfromthepatri- archalblessingsitprefigured.First,EmmawastheProphet’swife,and anyblessinggiventoherwasthereforedistinctive.Morespecifically, liketheotherrevelationsthatmakeuptheDoctrineandCovenants, ther evelationtoEmmacamedir ectlyfr omGodthr oughHis 1286SperryTreasurylive7/28/046:05PMPage120

prophet,notthroughapatriarch,bishop,orotherecclesiastical leader.Moreover,unlikepersonalrevelations,patriarchalblessings, orevensomeoftheotherpersonallydirectedrevelationsinthe DoctrineandCovenants,13 itconcludeswiththesesignificantwords, whichJosephSmithrepeatedyearslatertotheReliefSocietyinr ef- erencetotherevelation:“Andthisismywor duntoall.” 14 Thus,in significantways,ittranscendsthemer elypersonal,fittingthepara- metersofscriptureandtherebyacquiringpermanence,authority,and universality.WhileitsspecificsareaddressedtoEmma,itsprinciples areapplicabletoall. AndwhatwasGod’smessagetoEmmaand,byimplication,tothe Church?Therevelation’ssixteenversesaddressfouressentialaspects ofEmma’slife:heractionsanddesir es,herr elationshiptoher prophet-husband,herresponsibilitiestotheChurch,andherrela- tionshipwiththeLord.

ACTIONS AND DESIRES InHisconsistentpatternofpromiseforperformance,theLord tellsEmmaintherevelationpreciselywhatHeexpectsofherasa Latter-daySaintandinreturnpromisesheraidinfulfillingthose expectations.Thoughverses4and10appeartobemildrebukes,they couldalsobereadasappealsfortrustandfaithinHisdivinewill: “Murmurnotbecauseofthethingswhichthouhastnotseen,for theyarewithheldfromtheeandfromtheworld,whichiswisdomin meinatimetocome”theLor dtellsEmmainDoctrineand Covenants25:4.Hemayhavebeenr eferringonlytoEmma’sregret atnothavingseenthegoldplates,thoughshehadheldthem,pr o- tectedthem,andactedasscribeintheirtranslation,butHemayalso havebeenalludingtothetumultuousexperiencesEmmahad enduredsincehermarriagetoJosephthreeyearsearlier.Theattempts bygoldseekerstowresttheplatesfromJoseph,theharassmentdur- ingtheirtranslation,themobswhointerferedwithEmma’sbaptism, theunwarrantedarrestofJosephthesamenight,aswellasthealien- ationofherparents,thelossofhomeandroots,andthedeathofher firstchildallgaveEmmaaharshintr oductiontothelifeofa prophet’swife.Anearlylessonfromtheseexperienceswasthatonly patienceandtrustinGod’swisdomandofteninscr utablepurposes wouldsustainherthroughthedifficulttimes. 1286SperryTreasurylive7/28/046:05PMPage121

Theninverse10theLordcounselsEmma,inwhatcertainlymust beoneofthemostoft-repeatedcommandsinChristianliterature,to “layasidethethingsofthisworldandseekforthethingsofabet - ter,”surelyacalltokeepperspectiveontheuncer taintiesherlife offered.Buthercompliancetothesetwoadmonitionswouldnotgo unaided.“Liftupthyheartandrejoice,”Heencouragesherinverse 13,“andcleaveuntothecovenantswhichthouhastmade.”Onlya monthearlierEmmahadenteredintothecovenantofbaptism, whichpromisedherthatifshewould“serve[theLord]andkeephis commandments,”Hewouldinturn“pourouthisSpiritmoreabun- dantlyupon[her]”(Mosiah18:10).Furthermore,beforeanother monthpassed,atherlong-delayedconfir mationshewouldreceive thegiftoftheHolyGhost,anadditionalsour ceofsolaceand guidance.

MARRIAGE RELATIONSHIP AtthetimeoftherevelationEmmahadjustturnedtwenty-six andJosephwasnotyettwenty-five.Theywer erelativelyinexperi- encedandunsophisticatedyoungpeoplewhohadbeengiven momentousresponsibilities.Asupportiveandtrustingrelationship wouldbecrucialtothefulfillmentoftheirrespectivecallings.Itsrec- iprocalnatureisexplainedinverses5and9oftherevelation.Emma wascounseledtocomfortandconsoleherpr ophet-husbandinhis timesofafflictionandtocontinuetoassisthimwhenneededinhis ecclesiasticaldutiesasscribe(verse5).Intur n,shewaspromised Joseph’ssupportintheChurch,presumablytoenablehertofulfill themissiontowhichtheLor dhadcalledher(verse9).Theimpor t ofthiscounselbecameclearascircumstanceschallengedJosephand Emma’seffortstofulfilltheirobligationstoeachother .While Joseph’ssupportgavelegitimacyandsignificancetoEmma’sassign- mentsintheChurch,hersupportofJosepheasedtheburdenofhis calling.Butthemergingoftheirmaritalandecclesiasticalr elation- shipsoftencreatedanemotionalkaleidoscopealter natingjoywith sorrow,peacewithanxiety,trustwithsuspicion,andunitywith doubt.Forequilibrium,theLordurgedEmmatomaintainherspirit ofmeeknessandlethersoul“delightin[her]husband,andtheglory which[would]comeuponhim”(verse14).Toenjoytheseblessings, Hewarned,shemust“bewareofpride”(verse14). 1286SperryTreasurylive7/28/046:05PMPage122

ThebindingforceofthatcounselunitedJosephandEmmaina supportiveandtrulycomplementaryrelationshipformostoftheir seventeenyearstogether.Joseph’sletterstoherexpressaffectionand confidence.ThoughfewofEmma’sletterstoJosephremain,theanx- ietyandurgencyevidentinherpublishedletterstoIllinoisgovernor ThomasCarlin,pleadingagainstJoseph’sextraditionto, alongwithherboldnessindaringtointer ferewiththeprocessesof law,certainlytestifyofherwillingnesstobemorethanacomfortand consolation.Onecanonlywonderwhythestr engthoftheirunion wasnotsufficientforEmmatoacceptpluralmar riage,aprinciple acceptedinfaithbysomanyotherdevotedcouples.Per hapsfor Emmaitwasbecauseofthatunity,theonenessthathadsocharac - terizedtheirrelationship,thatshewasunabletoopenittoothers. CouldEmma’sreluctancetoshareherprophet-husbandbeamani- festationoftheprideshehadbeenwarnedagainst?Didherfaithfal- teronlyinthisfinaltestwhenthesacrificeclaimedtoomuchofher ownidentity?Theanswersremainelusive.

DUTIES TO THE CHURCH ButtherevelationcalledforEmmatodomor ethansupportand assistJoseph.Therewerespecifictasksforhertoperformthatwould benefittheChurch,inpreparationforwhichhertimewasto“be giventowriting,andtolear ningmuch”(verse8).Oneassignment was“tomakeaselectionofsacr edhymns”(verse11).Bythisman - datetheLordsanctionedmusicasanappr opriateformofreligious worship.Hymntextshavelongbeenamediumtoexpr essreligious thoughtandemotion,andthebir thofMormonismevokedawide rangeofboth,fromthemillennialistfervorofthepoemsofParleyP. PrattandthedoctrinalassertionsofElizaR.Snowtothejoyous affirmationsofW.W.Phelps.Nowtheseandotherpoetictestimonies wouldbecomepartofLatter-daySaintworship. IttooktwoyearsforEmmatocompletethehymnselection,and anotherthreepassedbeforethehymnswereprintedinasinglevol- ume.FromJuly1830toApril1832,whentheselectionpr ocesswas completedandW.W.Phelpswasinstructedtocorrectandpublish thehymns,Emmaworkeddespiteagrowingantagonismtowardthe ChurchinKirtlandandaseriesofpersonaltragedies.Throughthem all,shepersistedinfulfillingthisassignmentoftheLor d.Her 1286SperryTreasurylive7/28/046:05PMPage123

mother-in-lawobservedthatduringthistime“herwholehear twas intheworkoftheLordandshefeltnointerestexceptforthechurch andthecauseoftruth.”15 Finally,inJune1832, TheEveningandtheMorningStar beganprint- ingEmma’sselectionofhymntextsdescribedas“Hymns,selected andpreparedfortheChurchofChrist,inthelastdays.”Thedestruc- tionofPhelps’spressin1833suspendedtheprintingofhymnsand otherChurchpublications.Untilthen,thir ty-eighthymntextshad appearedineithertheStar oritssuccessor,theLatterDaySaints’ MessengerandAdvocate. 16Butin1835theChur chcouncilinstructed PhelpstocontinuehisworkwithEmma,andearlyin1836thefirst Latter-daySainthymnalfinallycameof fthepr ess,entitled A Collection ofHymnsfortheChurchoftheLatterDaySaints. The127- pagehymnalcontainedninetyhymns,approximatelyfortyofthem writtenbyLatter-daySaintauthors,primarilyPhelpshimself.Emma’s prefacedrewonthewordsofthe1830revelation,affirmingthat“the songoftherighteous”was“aprayeruntoGod”andsuggestingthat thehymnalwasonlyabeginningef fort“tillmorearecomposedor weareblessedwithacopiousvarietyofthesongsofZion.”17 TheideathatEmmaSmithshouldbethesolecompilerofthe Church’shymnalemergedin1839whenthehighcouncilauthorized anexpandedhymnbook.DavidRogers,aNewYorkconvert,hadpre- viouslypublishedfortheNewYorkSaintsahymnalthathaddrawn heavilyonEmma’s1835selection,andBrighamYounghadtakena collectionofhymnstoEnglandwiththeintentofpublishingahym- nalthere.ButtheNauvoohighcouncilvotedtodestroyallcopiesof Rogers’shymnbookandtoforbidBrighamYoungtopublishaBritish edition.18Theprohibitionevidentlydidnotr eachYoungintimeto preventthepublicationofthreethousandLatter-daySainthymnals inManchester,England,in1840.Whenhedecidedtor evisethe hymnalthenextyear,BrighamYoungwrotetoJosephSmithforper- mission.ApparentlytheneedsofthegrowingChurchprompted JosephtopermitasecondeditioninEnglandandanew ,enlarged edition,underEmma’sdirection,inNauvoo.Emma’sexclusivestew- ardshipoverthechurchhymnalhadbeenmodifiedtoallowthepub- licationofavolumeofhymnsappropriatetotheBritishSaintsunder BrighamYoung’sdirection.19 Asecond,moreproblematiccommissionoftheLordtoEmmain 1286SperryTreasurylive7/28/046:05PMPage124

therevelationwas“toexpoundscriptures,andtoexhorttheChurch, accordingasitshallbegiventheebymySpirit”(verse7).Withonly afewexceptions,noreligiousdenominationsatthattimegavepub- licplatformsinmixedcongregationstowomen.Traditionandcon- temporaryidealsoffeminineproprietywerepowerfulagentsin definingawoman’sappropriatepublicbehavior,andpreachingin publicwasnotafeminineoccupationinthenineteenth century.20Thesesocialstrictures,however,didnotaffectthesmall, informalChurchmeetings,characteristicofLatter-daySaintworship fromitsbeginnings.InNauvoo,womenregularlyaddressedthe mixedChurchgatheringsinoneanother’shomesforaSundayor weeknightprayer,blessing,orcottagemeeting.Alongwiththemen, theyboretestimony,expoundeddoctrine,andreadscripturestothe assembledmembers.Theyprophesied,spokeintongues,andblessed oneanother.21 EmmaoftenaccompaniedJosephtosuchmeet - ings.22FewcouldhavebeenmoreconversantwithMormondoctrine thanEmmaSmithorhadmoreincentivetoexpounditstruths. Thepatriarchalblessingsofotherwomenduringthisperiod admonishedthem,also,toinstr uctoneanother,mentortheyoung ingospelprinciples,and“encourageandstr engthen”othersinthe faith.23 OnesoblessedwasPhebeWoodruffbeforesheleftonamis- siontoEnglandwithherhusband,W ilford.BrighamY oung promisedherthatshewouldbe“lookeduptoasAmotherinIsrael forcouncilandforInstruction.”Hegrantedher“power&wisdomto teachthetruthtothyfriendsandthyse[x],”andguaranteedthatshe would“notbeatalossforIdeas&wordsin[her]teaching.”24 TheorganizationoftheReliefSocietyin1842pr ovidedwiththepublicsettingmostconducivetothefulfillmentof herassignment.Atitsinitialmeeting,JosephSmithpr oposedthat thesistersshould“electapresidenttopresideoverthem.”After ElizabethAnnWhitneynominatedEmma,shewaselectedbythe nineteenotherwomenpresent.Josephthenreadthe1830revelation, explainingthatatthetimeithadbeengiven,Emmahadbeen “ordainedtoexpoundthescriptur estoallandtoteachthefemale partofthecommunity.”25 ThoughshemetwiththeReliefSociety onlyfromMarchtoOctoberin1842,whenitadjournedforthewin- termonths,andagainforjustfourmeetingsinMar ch1844,Emma wasclearlyitsheadandmovingspirit.26 1286SperryTreasurylive7/28/046:05PMPage125

Shetookhercallingtoexhor tthesistersseriouslyandimmedi - atelysetaboutinstructingthemtopurifytheirownlivesandhelpin creatingavirtuouscommunity.Sheurgedthemtoextendtheircom- passionateservicetoalldistressedSaintsandtodrawar oundthem protectivebandsofunity.TheReliefSocietywastosavesoulsaswell asrelievethepoor,Josephcounseled,andEmmaadvisedthesisters inthisimportantobligation.“Eachmembershouldbeambitiousto dogood,”sheurged,“dealfranklywitheachother ,watchoverthe morals,andbeverycarefulofthecharacterandr eputationofthe membersoftheInstitutionetc.” 27Tothisend,Emmazealously accededtoJoseph’schargetoassistin“correctingthemoralsand strengtheningthevirtuesofthecommunity”and“toreformpersons . . .andbykindnesssanctifyandcleanse[them]fr omallunright- eousness.”28 Ferretingoutiniquitywasadelicatetask,butEmma, withthehelpofhercounselors,endeavoredtofulfillJoseph’scharge. Likethatofhundredsoffemalemoralr eformassociationsthrough- outthecountry,allbentonexposingevil,oneoftheReliefSociety’s aimswastocleansetheChurchofanywrongdoing.Notingtheir reluctancetobemoralcar etakers,Emmalamentedthat“thesisters arenotcarefulenoughtoexposeiniquity;thetimehadbeenwhen charityhadcoveredamultitudeofsins,”shesaid,“butnowitisnec- essarythatsinshouldbeexposed.” 29 Hercommitmentto“uphold virtue”and“putdowntransgression”dominatedthefinalmeetings oftheReliefSocietyinMarch1844,inwhichsheusedherauthority aspresidenttodenouncethefalsedoctrineof“spiritualwifer y,”a counterfeitoftherevealeddoctrineofpluralmarriage,andwarnthe sisterstoguardagainstitand“anyotherimpr operpractice.”30 Itis generallyconcededthatEmmausedherpositionasReliefSociety presidentandhercommissiontoexhor tthesistersasalicensealso tothwarttheestablishmentofpluralmarriage.31 Theevidenceshows thatshedidindeedattempttomobilizeovertactionagainsttheprac- ticethroughtheReliefSociety,whichnumberedmorethanthirteen hundredby1844.Moreover,theminutesofthefinalmeetingsofthe ReliefSocietyclearlyindicatethatsheneverquestionedherrightor herauthoritytoinstructthesistersoftheChur chintheirdutiesas shesawthem. IncontrasttothecontroversialnatureoftheReliefSociety’smoral puritycampaignwasEmma’sequallyemphaticdesirethatthesisters 1286SperryTreasurylive7/28/046:05PMPage126

clothethemselvesinChristianservice,“Seekoutandrelievethedis- tressed,”sheurged,andshecounseledthemtogivehelpandmater- ialaidtooneanother,invokingtheSpiritbyblessingoneanother whenneededforhealing,forcomfor t,forchildbirth,andforspiri- tualsupportandguidance. 32Ifthesistersneededamodelofselfless service,Emmacouldprovideit.Inthisbenevolentchar ge,Emma’s actionsfaroutweighedherwords.FromtheKirtlanddays,whenshe andElizabethAnnWhitneyprepareda“lovefeast”forthepoor, Emma,sooftenabeneficiar yofthecompassionoffriends,wasthe firsttoextendittoothers.Hercompassionandhospitalityin Nauvoowerelegendary.Herhomewasoftenasanctuaryforthe homeless,theorphaned,andthesick.LucyW alkerandhersiblings wereonlyafewofthedozensofindividualswhocameunderher protectivecare.Virtuallyorphanedattheirmother’sdeathbecause theirfatherwasabroadonamission,theWalkerchildrenwere offeredahomewiththePr ophetandEmma.“Ourownfatherand mothercouldscarcelyhavedonemor e,”Lucynotedwhenher youngersisterdied.“TheProphetandhiswifeintroducedusastheir sonsanddaughters.Everyprivilegewasaccordedusinthehome. Everypleasurewithinreachwasours.”33 Emma’scounselorswerealsoexemplarstothesisters.Elizabeth AnnWhitney,thenastrangertoEmma,openedherhometoEmma andJosephwhentheyarrivedinKirtlandalmostdestitute,andSarah Cleveland,alsoastrangeratthetime,gaveEmmaandherchildr en refugeinQuincywhenshefledfromtheMissouripersecutions,leav- ingherhusbandstillimprisonedinLiber tyJail.Itislittlewonder thatEmmaturnedtothesewomenforherclosestassociatesand advisersintheneworganization. AnotherpersistentthemeinEmma’sexhortationstothewasherappealforunity.“Measurestopromoteunioninthis societymustbecarefullyattendedto,”sheurgedthemembersatthe outset.34Asmembershipdramaticallyincreased,Emmawasevenmore urgentinherpleaforunity.“Weshallhavesufficientdifficultyfrom abroad,”sheprescientlywarnedinAugust1842,“withoutstirringup strifeamongourselvesandhar dnessandevilfeelings,onetowar ds anotheretc.”35 Thiscallto“circlethewagons,”shewassaying,was toguardthemselvesmoreagainstanencr oachingdisloyaltyto 1286SperryTreasurylive7/28/046:05PMPage127

JosephanddisunionwithintheChur chthanagainstthreatsfrom theoutside. But,asisoftenthecase,theprincipleofunitywaseasierforEmma topreachthantopractice.Evenasshepleadedforaunitedsister - hood,shewasherselfbecomingasymbolofdisunion.Boththe1830 revelationandher1844blessingcenter edonherunitywithJoseph asthekeytothesuccessofherowncalling.Butintheendunitygave waytodoubt,anddoubtinvokeddisloyalty.Herexhortationstothe ReliefSocietyinitsfinalfourmeetingsinMarch1844seemedfrantic butfutile.ImmediatelythereafterboththeReliefSocietyandEmma’s placeasits“electlady”abruptlyended.Emma’scommitmenttothe 1830r evelationseriouslyfalter ed,andtheconsequenceswer e monumental.

RELATIONSHIP WITH THE LORD Finally,howdidthe1830r evelationdefineEmma’srelationship withtheLord?Wasitunique,orcanprinciplesbeextrapolatedtoall believers?Thefirstthreeversesoftherevelationsetforththeprimary elementsofthatr elationship.First,theLor dclaimsEmmaasa daughterbecauseofherwillingnesstoacceptthegospel,acondition applicabletoallwhodesir etobesonsanddaughtersofGod. 36 Second,Hecovenantswithher,promisinghereternalblessingsin returnforobedienceandfaith,anotheruniversalprinciple.Finally , HeforgivesEmmahersins,personallyvalidatingtheef ficacyofher recentbaptism,andreceivesherintothecircleofthe“elect,”who arethose,Heexplainselsewhere,who“hearmyvoiceandhar den nottheirhearts”(D&C29:7). Emma,likeothersoftheelect,hadpr ovenherfaithfulnesseven beforemortalityandthroughthe“covenantofgrace”waspermitted toenterthislifeatatimeandplacethatwouldbringherintocon - tactwiththegospel.37 Butbeingoftheelectalsocarriedresponsibili- ties,foreordainedmissionsthatvariedwitheachindividualaccor d- ingtoGod’spurposes.ApassageinJosephSmith’sprivatejournalfor March17,1842,affirmsthatdefinition:“ElectmeanttobeElectedto acertainwork,” abroaddefinitionoftheterm.TheProphetthen notedthatEmmafulfilledthispartofthe1830revelationwhenshe waselectedpresidentoftheReliefSociety,thespecificworktowhich shehadbeen“previouslyordained.”38 IntheReliefSocietyminutes 1286SperryTreasurylive7/28/046:05PMPage128

ofthatdate,however,heseemedtonarrowthemeaning,indicating that“electlady”specificallymeant“electedtopr eside,”atermpre- sumablyapplicabletoanywomanwhopresided.Certainlythatwas howthetermwasappliedinlateryears.Inthatsamemeeting,confirmedEmma’searlierblessingfromJoseph,alsodeclaring hertobe“amotherinIsrael”whowas“tolooktothewantsofthe needy,andbeapatternofvirtue.”Inreferringtothe1830revelation, hesaidhe“rejoicedtoseethisInstitutionorganizedaccordingtothe lawofHeaven. . .accordingtotherevelation”previouslygivento Emma“appointinghertothisimpor tantcalling.”39 Hiswordssug- gestthattheorganizationoftheReliefSocietyfacilitatedthefulfill - mentofEmma’scallasanelectlady. Onemightwonderwhyittooktwelveyearsforthispar tofthe revelationtoberealized.PerhapsEmma’sservicetotheChurch before1842wasmerelypreparatory,althoughcertainlyfallingwithin therangeofEmma’sspecialcalling.TheLordevidentlydirectedthe proceedingsofthatorganizationalmeeting,fortherewasapossibil- ityforotherwomentobeelectedpr esident,particularlySarahM. Kimball,alogicalchoice,whenJosephopenedthemeetingfornom- inations.ElizabethAnnWhitney,however,gavethenominationto Emma,andherelectionbythewomenpresentratifiedhercallasthe “electlady.”40 Fromthattimeon,thetitle“electlady”inreferenceto EmmaSmithdevelopedamystiquethatcur taileditsuseforothers untilafterherdeath,despiteherdissociationwiththeReliefSociety andtheChurch.ThoughBrighamYoungauthorizedElizaR.Snowto organizeReliefSocietiesthroughouttheChurchanddirectitsactiv- itiesin1868,shewasnotofficiallysetapart“topreside”asthenew “electlady”until1880,theyearafterEmma’sdeath.41 ThefinalelementthatdefinedEmma’srelationshipwiththeLord isthefifteenthverseofther evelation.“Keepmycommandments continually,”Hetoldher,“andacrownofrighteousnessthoushalt receive.Andexceptthoudothis,”Hecautioned,“wher eIamyou cannotcome”(D&C25:15).InthatpassageEmmawastaughtafun- damentalprincipleofthegospel—thatGod’sblessingsareobtained onlybyobediencetothelawsuponwhichtheyar epredicated(see alsoD&C130:20–21).Thisprincipleunderliesever ycommandand blessingtheLordexpressedtoEmmaintherevelation,whichwasas completeandcertainapersonalguidetoEmmaSmith,theLatter - 1286SperryTreasurylive7/28/046:05PMPage129

daySaint,asitwasaspecialcallingtoEmmaSmith,thewifeofthe Prophet.

CONCLUSION Despitetheyearsbetweenthetwo,the1844blessingr eadslikea repriseofthe1830revelationonseveralpoints.Itr epeats,expands, anddevelopsseveralofthethemesintr oducedintheearlierdocu - ment,reflectingtheseasoningoffourteenyears.Perhapsmorethan herwordsandactionsinthosefinalmer curialyearsbeforethe Prophet’sdeath,the1844blessingisthebestindextoEmma’smind andspiritatthattimeandtheenduringeffectofthe1830revelation uponher. Besidesher“deepestdesiretoactinunisonwithJosephandretain herplacebyhisside,”ar emarkablestatementinviewoftheevents oftheprecedingmonths,Emmamadeseveralotherself-r evelatory requestsoftheLordinthat1844blessing.Sheexpr esseda“craving forwisdom”thatshewouldnotdoorsayanythingshewouldregret; shedesiredtheSpiritofGodandafr uitfulmindthatshewouldbe able“tocomprehendthedesignsofGod,whenrevealedthroughhis servantswithoutdoubting”;shesoughtwisdomtorearherchildren tobe“usefulornamentsintheKingdomofGod”andpr udenceto careforherbodythatshewouldlivetoper form“alltheworkthat [she]covenantedtoperforminthespiritworld”;andfinally,she askedfor“humility. . .thatshemightrejoiceintheblessingswhich Godhasinstoreforallwhoarewillingtobeobedienttohisrequire- ments.” Werethesethewordsofaprophet’swifehopingonlytoretainher placewithhim,orcouldtheyhavebeenapenitent’srecovenantwith God?Perhapstheywereboth.Asaglimpseintothehear tofEmma Smithontheeveofherhusband’sdeath,thisfinalblessing,Ibelieve, expressesanintensedesiretoreconnectwiththe1830revelationthat gaveherablueprintforherlife.Ifthewor dsoftheblessingcanbe takenasameasur eofhersoulatthatmoment,theytestifyof Emma’slongingtofeeltheapprobationoftheLordandspiritual uniononceagainwithJoseph. thatchapterinEmma’slife,evenasitopenedanewoneinthelifeof theChurch. Thoughdocumentingthespiritualjourneyofjustonewoman,the 1830revelationanditscompanionblessingcanwellser veasspiri- tualmarkersforallwhoseektobeintunewiththeLordandinhar- monywiththeChurch.“Thisismyvoiceuntoall,”theLordsaidat thecloseoftherevelationtoEmma.Perhapsweshouldreaditas God’svoicetoall.
