Oszołomiony wydarzeniami i op ętany zazdro ści ą m ąż robi wszystko, żeby zburzy ć nowy zwi ązek żony. Claire, b ędąc na uczuciowym rozdro żu, decyduje si ę pod ąż yć za głosem serca, nie zwa żaj ąc na skutki. GŁOSY PRASY To najbardziej poruszaj ąca filmowa love story ostatnich lat. Bo w Niewinno ści Paula Coxa najwa żniejsza nie jest ekscytuj ąca fabuła, gwiazdy filmowe, seks czy nago ść . Najwa żniejsza jest miło ść - prawdziwe, ponadczasowe i niezniszczalne uczucie. Cox opowiada histori ę Claire i Andreasa, którzy jako nastolatkowie prze żyli pierwsz ą prawdziw ą miło ść , a po latach w niezwykły sposób odnajduj ą si ę. Spotykaj ą si ę na pierwszej rozmowie, która dla obojga jest bardzo krepuj ąca, ale od razu zdaj ą sobie spraw ę, że dawne uczucie jest wci ąż żywe. Nadal s ą zakochani. I nie chodzi tu o jaka ś kolejn ą odmian ę sentymentalnego powrotu do miło ści z lat dziecinnych, ale o prawdziwe, szalone i nami ętne uczucie. Niewinno ść Paula Coxa unosi serce ku górze. Zamiast wtłacza ć swoich bohaterów w wygodne i czytelne konwencje, przenosi ć w niezwykłe scenerie, re żyser postawił siedemdziesi ęcioletnich kochanków tam, gdzie żyli do tej pory, w tym, co ich ukształtowało. W ci ągu długiego życia Claire i Andreas nauczyli si ę wypełnia ć obowi ązki, nabrali odpowiednich nawyków, wydeptali sobie wygodne ście żki i poczuli si ę bezpieczni w raz na zawsze ustalonym rytmie. Teraz stoj ą przed najdramatyczniejszym wyborem w życiu: pój ść za głosem serca, rzucaj ąc wszystko, co stworzyli do tej pory czy wie ść dalej spokojne życie, wspominaj ąc czasem dawn ą wielk ą miło ść . A wydawało si ę, że takie „młodzie ńcze” dylematy maj ą ju ż za sob ą (…). Paul Cox po raz kolejny okazał si ę wnikliwym obserwatorem ludzkich charakterów. Posta ć Johna, m ęż a Claire, jest tego najlepszym przykładem. Nie jest to bezduszny typ, który zasługuje jedynie na to, by go porzuci ć. Jest po prostu człowiekiem, który ma klapki rutyny na oczach, oczekuje, że jego życie dalej b ędzie si ę spokojnie toczy ć, a ż nie przerwie go jaki ś wypadek czy choroba. Kiedy Claire w ko ńcu mówi Johnowi o swoim romansie z Andreasem, bo, jak twierdzi, jest za stara, by kłama ć, John reaguje spokojnie. Oczywi ście, czuje si ę zawiedziony, rozczarowany i zraniony, ale w pewnym stopniu jest wdzi ęczny losowi za te emocje. W ko ńcu, co ś niezwykłego wreszcie wydarzyło si ę w jego życiu. Scenariusz postawił przed re żyserem niemały problem. Cox musiał znale źć aktorów, których wiekowo ść nie b ędzie tylko efektem pracy charakteryzatorki czy aktorskiego kunsztu. Staro ść musiała by ć „widoczna” - tylko tak mogła powsta ć autentyczna i poruszaj ąca historia. Julia Blake i Charles ‘Bud’ Tigwell stan ęli na wysoko ści zadania - stworzyli postacie z krwi i ko ści, pełne ciepła, postacie zdolne prze żywa ć nami ętne uniesienia i tryska ć humorem. Jednak mimo kipi ącej w nich aktywno ści, która wielu wyda si ę zarezerwowana wył ącznie dla młodych, ani na chwil ę nie zapominamy, że Claire i Andreas nie maj ą 20 lat i całego życia przed sob ą. W li ście do Claire Andreas napisał, że zawsze wyobra żał sobie ich tylko razem i, je żeli ona jeszcze żyje, wszystko nadal jest mo żliwe. Tigwell obdarzył swoj ą posta ć łagodn ą m ęsk ą zaci ęto ści ą i uporem. Andreas nie ma zamiaru ani na chwil ę podda ć si ę społecznej presji i nie chce, wbrew radom „życzliwych”, sko ńczy ć z „tymi rzeczami” (…). Niewinno ść to taki film, po którym a ż si ę chce wyci ągn ąć r ękę i uściska ć dłonie jego twórcom (…). Niewinno ść to pie śń rado ści i nadziei - film bardzo dojrzały i daleki od fałszywych uproszcze ń. W czasach, kiedy w wi ększo ści filmów niemal ka żda relacja mi ędzy kobiet ą a m ęż czyzn ą zaczyna si ę od seksu, Paul Cox wychodzi od uczucia, które rozwija si ę i z czasem doprowadza do spełnienia w cielesnej nami ętno ści. Re żyser Niewinno ści mówi o miło ści tak m ądrze i z takim wyczuciem, że zastawiam si ę, o czym jest tyle innych filmów - tak zwanych „miłosnych”. Roger Ebert, „Chicago Sun-Times”, 7.09.2001 Niewinno ść Paula Coxa to gł ęboko poruszaj ący film. To niezwykle subtelna opowie ść o pami ęci dawnej miło ści, która dojrzewała wiele lat. To historia nami ętno ści ponownie budz ącej si ę z letargu w jesieni życia. Re żyser ukazuje wszystkie tajemnice i cał ą zło żono ść uczucia, które na nowo poł ączyło bohaterów. Niewinno ść to tak że niezwykle pi ękny filmy - obrazy dnia dzisiejszego płynnie przechodz ą we wspomnienia dawnej przeszło ści. Wydaje si ę, że wystarczy tylko przetrze ć zaparowane lustro, by chwile, które przemin ęły nagle do nas powróciły. Oczarowani patrzymy na wzruszaj ące sceny, w których bohaterowie, pełni nadziei spotykaj ą si ę, śmiej ą i kochaj ą. Czas nie stoi w miejscu. Bohaterowie musz ą spieszy ć si ę, by skra ść jeszcze kilka cudownych chwil z życia, które im zostało. Opowie ść rozwija si ę bardzo naturalnie. Przemy ślany i pełen dogł ębnych obserwacji scenariusz Coxa doskonale uchwycił wielowarstwowo ść struktury i kolorystyczne bogactwo opowie ści. Sceny miłosne pary siedemdziesi ęciolatków s ą odwa żne, a jednocze śnie pełne dobrego smaku. Niewinno ść to film o miło ści, tej z przeszło ści i tej dzisiejszej, to film o tym kim jeste śmy i naszym stosunku do samych siebie. Julia Blake, zachwycaj ąca w roli Claire, doskonale portretuje wra żliwo ść , zw ątpienie i nami ętno ść swojej bohaterki. Równie znakomicie wypadł Terry Norris graj ący jej m ęż a. To m ęż czyzna za ślepiony przez samozadowolenie, zamkni ęty w świecie własnego egoizmu. Nie potrafi wyra żać uczu ć, a swój zwi ązek z żon ą traktuje jako co ś oczywistego. Grany przez Norrisa bohater jest żałosny, tragiczny, a jednocze śnie śmieszny (...). Niewinno ść to gł ęboka i chwytaj ąca za serce filmowa opowie ść . Re żyser ani na chwil ę nie popada w sentymentalizm. Wspaniale przedstawia na ekranie spokój i harmoni ę dwóch poł ączonych ze sob ą dusz. To znakomite dzieło filmowe skrz ące si ę bogactwem uczu ć, które kryj ą zakochane serca. Jaffee* In this Article's first Part, the author sets Law and Economics' own devices against its fundamental proposition: In free contractual pursuit of personal wealth, we find the best means of serving nearly all of our legitimate interpersonaland social interests. Using the classic "efficient breach" case as paradigm, Profes- sor Jaffee argues that all contracts cases defy judgment of whether agreement or breach is efficient-that every such case is intractably ambiguous and threatens inefficient or vagrant costs, profits, or demoralization.     Idioms and Expressions by David Holmes A method for learning and remembering idioms and expressions I wrote this model as a teaching device during the time I was working in Bangkok, Thai- land, as a legal editor and language consultant, with one of the Big Four Legal and Tax companies, KPMG (during my afternoon job) after teaching at the university. When I had no legal documents to edit and no individual advising to do (which was quite frequently) I would sit at my desk, (like some old character out of a Charles Dickens’ novel) and prepare language materials to be used for helping professionals who had learned English as a second language—for even up to fifteen years in school—but who were still unable to follow a movie in English, understand the World News on TV, or converse in a colloquial style, because they’d never had a chance to hear and learn com- mon, everyday expressions such as, “It’s a done deal!” or “Drop whatever you’re doing.” Because misunderstandings of such idioms and expressions frequently caused miscom- munication between our management teams and foreign clients, I was asked to try to as- sist. I am happy to be able to share the materials that follow, such as they are, in the hope that they may be of some use and benefit to others. The simple teaching device I used was three-fold: 1. Make a note of an idiom/expression 2. Define and explain it in understandable words (including synonyms.) 3. Give at least three sample sentences to illustrate how the expression is used in context.

    Tony Keen ‘Invasion narratives in British television Science Fiction’ ‘Went the Day of the Daleks well?’ An investigation into the role of invasion narratives in shaping 1950s and 1960s British television Science Fiction, as shown in Quater- mass, Doctor Who and UFO If the function of art is to hold a mirror up to society, then science fiction (sf), through the distorted reflection it offers, allows the examination of aspects of society that might otherwise be too uncomfortable to confront. This essay aims to look at how invasion narratives, stories concerned with the invasion of Britain from outside, shaped three British science fiction series, and how those series interro- gated the narratives. The series will primarily be examined through aesthetic and social ap- proaches. Particular areas to be explored include the embracing and subverting of common assumptions about Britain’s attitude to invasion, and the differing attitudes to the military displayed. Introduction As an island nation, the prospect of invasion has always occupied a prominent place in the British popular imagination. According to Sellar and Yeatman, the two memorable dates in history are 55 BC and 1066, the dates of the invasions of Julius Caesar and William the Con- queror.1 Subsequent events such as the Spanish Armada of 1588 are also well-known mo- ments in history. It is inevitable that the prospect of invasion should produce speculative literature. Some works appeared around the time of Napoleon’s threatened invasion of 1803,2 but ‘invasion literature’ as a literary genre emerged out of the growing market for novels and short-story magazines, and is generally considered to have begun with the appearance of George Tomp- kyns Chesney’s 1871 story ‘The Battle of Dorking’,3 a story of the German conquest of Eng- land, prompted by the German victory in the Franco-Prussian War of 1871.
