The film endured a long and laborious gestation period under the threat of financial ruin. The project began as a sitcom pilot that McCarthy had initially penned for Fox Television. Fox passed, deeming the project “too edgy and too controversial for TV” “Can We Get a Cleanup On (qtd. in Kevin Aisle 2?”: Williamson). But McCarthy and her How Film Critics Mopped Up the production team could Transgressions of Jenny McCarthy’s not be dissuaded. They Dirty Love bought the rights back Sara Swain from Fox and McCarthy went to work transforming the script into a feature film (Kates). Polansky Stanton Glantz, PhD CENTER FOR TOBAccO CONTROL RESEARCH AND EDUCATION UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, SAN FRANCISCO SAN FRANCISCO, CA 94143 April 2007 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Smoking among American adults fell by half between 1950 and 2002, yet smoking on U.S. movie screens reached historic heights in 2002, topping levels observed a half century earlier.1 Tobacco’s comeback in movies has serious public health implications, because smoking on screen stimulates adolescents to start smoking,2,3 accounting for an estimated 52% of adolescent smoking initiation. Equally important, researchers have observed a dose-response relationship between teens’ exposure to on-screen smoking and smoking initiation: the greater teens’ exposure to smoking in movies, the more likely they are to start smoking. Conversely, if their exposure to smoking in movies were reduced, proportionately fewer teens would likely start smoking. To track smoking trends at the movies, previous analyses have studied the U.S. motion picture industry’s top-grossing films with the heaviest advertising support, deepest audience penetration, and highest box office earnings.4,5 This report is unique in examining the U.S. movie industry’s total output, and also in identifying smoking movies, tobacco incidents, and tobacco impressions with the companies that produced and/or distributed the films — and with their parent corporations, which claim responsibility for tobacco content choices. Examining Hollywood’s product line-up, before and after the public voted at the box office, sheds light on individual studios’ content decisions and industry-wide production patterns amenable to policy reform.

‘LOVE, AGAIN’ CAST BIOS TERI POLO (Chloe Baker) – Teri Polo is best known for her role as Robert De Niro’s daughter, Pam Byrnes, in the “Meet the Parents” feature films. She recently starred in “The Little Fockers,” the third installment of the movie franchise and completed production on the feature “Beyond” opposite Jon Voight. Polo has also recently filmed the Lifetime movie “We Have Your Husband” and had a recurring role on “Law & Order: Los Angeles.” She played the character of Casey Winters, wife of Detective Rex Winters, played by Skeet Ulrich. In 2011, Polo starred in the ABC series “Man Up.” Polo’s other recent credits include the feature film “The Hole,” directed by Joe Dante and the NBC miniseries “The Storm,” both released in 2010. Polo’s film credits include “Beyond Borders” co-starring Angelina Jolie, the suspense thriller “The Unsaid” opposite Andy Garcia and “Domestic Disturbance” opposite John Travolta and Vince Vaughn. She co-starred opposite De Niro and Stiller in “Meet the Parents,” for which she won a People’s Choice Award and its sequel “Meet the Fockers.” Originally from Dover, Delaware, Polo began her performing career as a dancer. By age 13, she was attending New York’s School of Ballet. Abstract This thesis will discuss the emerging influence of film review aggregators and their effect on the changing landscape for reviews in the film industry. Specifically, this study will look at the top 150 domestic grossing films of 2010 to empirically study the effects of two specific review aggregators. A time-delayed approach to regression analysis is used to measure the influencing effects of these aggregators in the long run. Subsequently, other factors crucial to predicting film success are also analyzed in the context of sustained earnings.

When Ann Patchett’s fourth novel, Bel Canto , was published in 2001, it was met with almost universal praise from critics, also winning the prestigious PEN/ Faulkner Award for Fiction, and rightfully so: it is a modern classic infused, from the first to the last page, with the author’s scintillating prose that unfolds gradually, to the beat of an inner rhythm reminding one of the architecture of classical opera. Unfortunately, as it is often the case in classical opera, whatever rare happy end exists is decidedly more bitter than sweet. The novel is inspired by a real-life hostage crisis taking place in the Peruvian capital Lima in 1996, when members of the Tupac Amaru revolutionary guerrillas stormed the Japanese Embassy in the middle of an official reception to celebrate the Emperor’s birthday and took almost six hundred high profile guests as hostages; the crisis dragged on for months before Peruvian security forces stormed the compound and killed all the rebels, releasing the remaining prisoners. By and large, Patchett preserved all the features of this dramatic incident in her novel, but added one more ingredient that she felt such a crisis required: a world-famous lyric soprano named Roxane Coss.

In Facebook, the set of pages liked by some users represents an important knowledge about their real life tastes. However, the process of classification, which is already hard when dealing with dozens of classes and genres, is made even more difficult by the very coarse information of Facebook pages. Our work originates from a large dataset of pages liked by users of a Facebook app. To overcome the limitations of multilabel automatic classification of free-form user-generated pages, we acquire data also from IMDb, a large public database about movies. We use it to associate with high accuracy a given cinema-related page on Facebook to the corresponding record on IMDb, which includes plenty of metadata in addition to genres. To this aim, we compare different approaches. The obtained results demonstrate that the highest accuracy is obtained by the combined use of different methods and metrics.
