'British Small Craft': the Cultural Geographies of Mid-Twentieth
‘British Small Craft’: the cultural geographies of mid-twentieth century technology and display James Lyon Fenner BA MA Thesis submitted to the University of Nottingham for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy August 2014 Abstract The British Small Craft display, installed in 1963 as part of the Science Museum’s new Sailing Ships Gallery, comprised of a sequence of twenty showcases containing models of British boats—including fishing boats such as luggers, coracles, and cobles— arranged primarily by geographical region. The brainchild of the Keeper William Thomas O’Dea, the nautical themed gallery was complete with an ocean liner deck and bridge mezzanine central display area. It contained marine engines and navigational equipment in addition to the numerous varieties of international historical ship and boat models. Many of the British Small Craft displays included accessory models and landscape settings, with human figures and painted backdrops. The majority of the models were acquired by the museum during the interwar period, with staff actively pursuing model makers and local experts on information, plans and the miniature recreation of numerous regional boat types. Under the curatorship supervision of Geoffrey Swinford Laird Clowes this culminated in the temporary ‘British Fishing Boats’ Exhibition in the summer of 1936. However the earliest models dated back even further with several originating from the Victorian South Kensington Museum collections, appearing in the International Fisheries Exhibition of 1883. 1 With the closure and removal of the Shipping Gallery in late 2012, the aim of this project is to produce a reflective historical and cultural geographical account of these British Small Craft displays held within the Science Museum. -

Indeed, if it were not for one comparatively late manu- script now preserved outside Ireland, in the Advocates' Library, Edinburgh, we should have to rely for our knowledge of most of these stories almost entirely on Keating's History of Ireland. Under these circumstances it has seemed to me that I could hardly render a better service to Irish studies than to preserve these stories, by transcribing and publishing them, from the accidents and the natural decay to which they are exposed as long as they exist in a single manuscript copy only. -
Fair Head Tidal Information Day
Welcome to Fair Head Tidal Information Day Fair Head Tidal (FHT) was awarded an Agreement for Lease from The Crown Estate in 2012 which grants it exclusive rights to carry out surveys on the site and, subject to securing the necessary consents, apply for a long term lease to use the site for the construction and operation of a tidal array with an installed capacity of up to 100MW. This exhibition outlines some of the survey work we have been doing on the site, an assessment of the findings and information on what we would be seeking to build. The next step is a formal planning application to the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs to seek consent to build and operate the project. We welcome your feedback on this exhibition and our plans. Who we are Fair Head Tidal Project is a joint venture between two independent offshore renewable energy specialists, DP Marine Energy (DPME) and Bluepower NV. DPME is one of a group of companies headquartered in Cork operating under the DP Energy name. DP Energy View north across Murlough Bay towards Fair Head is a renewable energy and sustainable development specialist business which has been pioneering renewable energy projects for over 20 years, operating in sites across the world. In addition to its tidal interests it also has projects in wind, solar and energy storage. Bluepower NV is a company established by DEME Blue Energy and Nuhma, both Belgian companies. DEME is a marine construction group with roots going back 150 years. DEME has gained direct tidal installation experience as part of the installation team for the SeaGen device, the first commercial scale tidal turbine at Strangford Lough in Northern Ireland. -

Survey & Excavation 2008 Castle Ward, Co. Down All Photos by M. Conway (NT) Unless otherwise stated Excavation ran for 15 days (Wednesday-Sunday) in June 2008 and attracted 43 volunteers. The project was supported by NT archaeologist and 3 archaeologists from Centre for Archaeological Fieldwork (QUB), through funding by NIEA, Built Heritage. The volunteers were given on-site training in excavation and recording. Public access and tours were held throughout field work. The Downpatrick Branch of YAC was given a day on-site, where they excavated in separate trenches and were filmed and interview by local TV. CHAPTER FOUR CELTIC SPIRITUALITY 4.1 Introduction The rediscovery of Celtic spirituality, particularly Celtic prayers and liturgical forms, has led to a popular movement, inter alia, among Anglicans around the world, including those in South Africa. Celtic spirituality has an attraction for both Christian and non-Christian, and often the less formal services are easier for secularized people, who have not been raised in a Christian environment, to accept. A number of alternative Christian communities wit h an accent on recovering Celtic spirituality have been established in recent years in the United Kingdom and in other parts of the world. The Northumbria Community, formed in 1976 (Raine & Skinner 1994: 440) is described as follows: The Community is clearly Christian, but with members from all kinds of Christian tradition, and some with no recognisable church background at all. We are married and single: some are unemployed, most are in secular jobs, some in full-time service which is specifically Christian, others are at home looking after families….Some of the most loyal friends of the Community are not yet committed Christians, but they are encouraged to participate as fully as they feel they can in our life. The Northumbria Community is one of several newly established communities with clear links to Celtic Spirituality. The near-universal appeal and flexibility reflected in the quotation above, is a feature of Celtic spirituality. For many in secularized Europe, the institutional church has lost its meaning, and traditional Christian symbols have no significance. Some of these people are now re-discovering Christianity through the vehicle of Celtic spirituality. -

The Architecture of Joseph Michael Gandy (1771-1843) and Sir John Soane (1753-1837): An Exploration Into the Masonic and Occult Imagination of the Late Enlightenment Abstract In examining select works of English architects Joseph Michael Gandy and Sir John Soane, this dissertation is intended to bring to light several important parallels between architectural theory and freemasonry during the late Enlightenment. Both architects developed architectural theories regarding the universal origins of architecture in an attempt to establish order as well as transcend the emerging historicism of the early nineteenth century. There are strong parallels between Soane's use of architectural narrative and his discussion of architectural 'model' in relation to Gandy's understanding of 'trans-historical' architecture. The primary textual sources discussed in this thesis include Soane's Lectures on Architecture, delivered at the Royal Academy from 1809 to 1836, and Gandy's unpublished treatise entitled the Art, Philosophy, and Science of Architecture, circa 1826. -

Small clouds pepper the sky and crows fly home to roost. The dark trees to the left begin to cast shadows and suggest the enveloping night which will soon follow. In the middle ground we see figures returning home and a man still industriously working the land. In the foreground, bent double on their knees, we see a group (possibly a family), of two young boys, two men, and a woman.
