Morris All Rights Reserved ABSTRACT Crucibles of Virtue and Vice: The Acculturation of Transatlantic Army Officers, 1815-1945 John F. Morris Throughout the long nineteenth century, the European Great Powers and, after 1865, the United States competed for global dominance, and they regularly used their armies to do so. While many historians have commented on the culture of these armies’ officer corps, few have looked to the acculturation process itself that occurred at secondary schools and academies for future officers, and even fewer have compared different formative systems. In this study, I home in on three distinct models of officer acculturation—the British public schools, the monarchical cadet schools in Imperial Germany, Austria, and Russia, and the US Military Academy—which instilled the shared and recursive sets of values and behaviors that constituted European and American officer cultures. Specifically, I examine not the curricula, policies, and structures of the schools but the subterranean practices, rituals, and codes therein. What were they, how and why did they develop and change over time, which values did they transmit and which behaviors did they perpetuate, how do these relate to nineteenth- and early-twentieth-century social and cultural phenomena, and what sort of ethos did they produce among transatlantic army officers? Drawing on a wide array of sources in three languages, including archival material, official publications, letters and memoirs, and contemporary nonfiction and fiction, I have painted a highly detailed picture of subterranean life at the institutions in this study.

    Monitoring the Effectiveness of Youth Participation in Project Citizen A Civitas-Russia Evaluation Project Summary of Preliminary Findings June 2005 Background In November 2002, Civitas-Russia began a monitoring initiative to evaluate the effectiveness of youth participation in the Russian variation of Project Citizen entitled “I am a Citizen of Russia.” We decided to focus this monitoring initiative in Samara where Project Citizen has been underway since 1998. In Samara, there is a civics curriculum for all grade levels designed to provide an integrated approach to pupil learning of the values, skills and knowledge required of citizens in a democratic society. The Samara educational system has incorporated the social project approach in general and Project Citizen in particular as one strategy for advancing its civic learning goals. The purpose of this monitoring initiative is to gauge the influence of participation in social projects on Samara’s larger goal of civic learning. The Samara Regional Center for Civic Education (SCCE) coordinated this initiative in cooperation with the Civitas-Russia partnership. One of the Civitas partners, Charles White of Boston University School of Education, served as a technical advisor because of his expertise in the field of educational research and evaluation. Another Civitas partner, Stephen Schechter, Director of the Council for Citizenship Education, provided administrative support for this initiative. Design The research design and instruments for this monitoring initiative sought to replicate the work of CCE in Bosnia and Vontz et al. (2000) in Indiana, Latvia, and Lithuania. These studies employed well-established research methods with validated instruments. The monitoring team designed a pre-test and post-test for experimental and control groups.

    Argus Nefte Transport Oil transportation logistics in the former Soviet Union Volume XVI, 5, May 2017 Primorsk loads first 100,000t diesel cargo Russia’s main outlet for 10ppm diesel exports, the Baltic port of Primorsk, shipped a 100,000t cargo for the first time this month. The diesel was loaded on 4 May on the 113,300t Dong-A Thetis, owned by the South Korean shipping company Dong-A Tanker. The 100,000t cargo of Rosneft product was sold to trading company Vitol for delivery to the Amsterdam-Rotter- dam-Antwerp region, a market participant says. The Dong-A Thetis was loaded at Russian pipeline crude exports berth 3 or 4 — which can handle crude and diesel following a recent upgrade, and mn b/d can accommodate 90,000-150,000t vessels with 15.5m draught. 6.0 Transit crude Russian crude It remains unclear whether larger loadings at Primorsk will become a regular 5.0 occurrence. “Smaller 50,000-60,000t cargoes are more popular and the terminal 4.0 does not always have the opportunity to stockpile larger quantities of diesel for 3.0 export,” a source familiar with operations at the outlet says. But the loading is significant considering the planned 10mn t/yr capacity 2.0 addition to the 15mn t/yr Sever diesel pipeline by 2018. JILL MARTINIUK University of Virginia, Graduate School of Arts & Science, 2015 Dissertation Advisor: Edith Clowes ABSTRACT The goal of this dissertation is to examine the theme of redemption in Venedikt Erofeev’s 1969 poema Moskva-Petushki. Moskva-Petushki is a major underground work of the late Soviet postmodern period, which narrates the physical and spiritual journey of the protagonist from Moscow to the small factory town of Petushki on an electric train. Although Moskva-Petushki is usually viewed as a satire, this dissertation takes a new approach, viewing the poema as a journey of spiritual redemption. It examines the relationship between Moskva-Petushki (translated as Moscow to the End of the Line) and other major journeys of redemption—Radishchev’s Journey from St. Petersburg to Moscow, Milton’s Paradise Lost and Dante’s The Divine Comedy.
