Gustav Klimt

The celebrated - cross has produced numerous high-quality racehorses, headed by the multiple Gr.1 winners , Highland Reel and . Gustav Klimt was one of the fastest members of this distinguished club. Having won a Curragh maiden on July 2, he travelled to Newmarket for the Gr.2 Superlative S. and despite being stopped in his tracks coming to the final quarter mile, Gustav Klimt quickened very well to snatch victory. He made a winning seasonal reappeance in the 2,000 Guineas Trial S. and then ran consistently well, notably finishing a half-length second in the St James’s Palace S. and third in the Irish 2,000 Guineas, and . Gustav Klimt’s dam Massarra, a quick-maturing daughter of Danehill, is a Group-placed sister to Kodiac, a two-times Champion sire of 2yos. Massarra is also closely related to the top , another Champion sire of 2yos. Massarra has also produced a Gr.1-winning 2yo, as well as four SWs by Galileo, including Gustav Klimt’s Group-winning sister Wonderfully. Gustav Klimt’s second dam won the Gr.1 and this is also the family of Pride of Dubai, a two-time Gr.1 winner at two in Australia who has the impressive total of five black-type 2yo winners in his first Irish crop and was Australia’s leading first-crop sire in 2019/20.

There are plenty of pointers available from the stallion careers of Teofilo, Frankel and , three of Galileo’s other Group winners out of Danehill mares. An extra line of is proving no problem for them. Frankel’s early crops contain Group winners out of daughters of (Gr.1 winner Mirage Dancer) and (2), as well as Listed winners with dams by INVINCIBLE SPIRIT and OASIS DREAM. The GREEN DESERTbranch has enjoyed Gr.1 success with both Teofilo and Intello. Teofilo’s successful stallion son Havana Gold has a dam by DESERT STYLE, whereas Intello’s first Gr.1 winner Intellogent has a dam by KHELEYF (another KHELEYF mare produced Gr.1 winner to Kodiac). Teofilo also has Group winners out of daughters of GREEN DESERT and OASIS DREAM.

Other sons of DANZIG which have succeeded with Teofilo include ANABAA - a stallion who has done very well with Galileo. The DANEHILL branch is also cropping up with these , and they have black-type winners inbred 3x3 to DANEHILL out of mares by , REDOUTE’S CHOICE, CLODOVIL, ROCK OF GIBRALTAR, DESERT KING and DANSILI. Gustav Klimt could therefore suit mares by other fast and precocious sons of Danehill.

An ACCLAMATION mare produced Massaat, one of Teofilo’s fastest winners. Kodiac has Gr.2 winners with dams by ROYAL APPLAUSE and ACCLAMATION, while Invincible Spirit has a Gr.1 winner with a dam by ACCLAMATION. Daughters of DARK ANGEL are well worth trying with Gustav Klimt. Frankel has Gr.1 and Gr.3 winners out of mares by ’s sons INCHINOR and . Indian Ridge’s son NAMID is the broodmare sire of Kodiac’s 2020 winner .

The MR PROSPECTOR line merits serious consideration. Frankel has 5 SWs from 16 foals out of mares (31%) and sired Gr.1 winner Without Parole from a grand-daughter, by . Teofilo’s three SWs with KINGMAMBO dams include winner . He also has Gr.2 and Gr.3 winners out of mares by KINGMAMBO’s son DUBAI DESTINATION. Kodiac’s Gr.1 winner Best Solution has a dam by KINGMAMBO.

MACHIAVELLIAN line mares have a Gr.1 winner by Teofilo and a Gr.2 winner by Frankel, and Intello has a Gr.3 winner with a dam by MEDICEAN. Daughters of DUBAWI have already been represented by several good winners by Teofilo, including the fast Tantheem, as well as a Gr.1 winner by Frankel. There are also Frankel Group winners with dams by GONE WEST, WOODMAN, CHESTER HOUSE and VETTORI. WHIPPER and RAVEN’S PASS sired the dams of Gr.2 2yo winners by Kodiac, who also has sired Group winners from FAPPIANO and STREET CRY line mares.

Inbreeding to SADLER’S WELLS is becoming an option with Galileo’s stallion sons. The outstanding Enable is inbred 3x2, and stallions bred on the Galileo-Danehill cross have sired winners of the Oaks and the from daughters of MONTJEU. Mares by HIGH CHAPARRAL and REFUSE TO BEND are other options. Frankel also had two Group winners with 2nd dams by SADLER’S WELLS, including the high-class Eminent.

The line descending from is thriving with these Galileo-Danehill cross stallions. Teofilo has SWs out of daughters of NUREYEV, POLAR FALCON and , while Frankel has sired Gr.1 winners and from mares. Kodiac and Invincible Spirit both have Gr.1-winning sprinters with dams by PIVOTAL. Daughters of are also worth a try.

Mares from the STORM CAT line have established a terrific partnership with Galileo and this line demands trying with Gustav Klimt. Teofilo has a Gr.1 2yo winner out of a GIANT’S CAUSEWAY mare and Frankel has a Gr.1-winning miler out of a HENNESSY mare. Kodiac has three Group winners with dams by SHAMARDAL, including Gr.1 winner .

The Sadler’s Wells male line has always thrived with mares from the SHIRLEY HEIGHTSline. Teofilo has excelled with MARK OF ESTEEM mares, notably siring Gr.1 winner Ajman Princess and the Hong Kong star Exultant. He also has a Gr.3 winner with a dam by DASHING BLADE. Frankel has sired the Gr.1 winner and Gr.2 winner Frankly Darling from DAYLAMI mares, plus Group winners from mares by DARSHAAN and DALAKHANI.

In view of Galileo’s excellent record with line mares, it is significant that Teofilo has two stakes winners with DR FONG dams and that Frankel sired the smart Monarch’s Glen from a LEAR FAN mare, plus a Listed winner from a DYNAFORMER mare. Mares by INTIKHAB should do well with Gustav Klimt.
