  • CELEBRATING FORTY YEARS of FILMS WORTH TALKING ABOUT 39 Years, 2 Months, and Counting…
5 JAN 18 1 FEB 18 1 | 5 JAN 18 - 1 FEB 18 88 LOTHIAN ROAD | FILMHOUSECinema.COM CELEBRATING FORTY YEARS OF FILMS WORTH TALKING ABOUT 39 Years, 2 Months, and counting… As you’ll spot deep within this programme (and hinted at on the front cover) January 2018 sees the start of a series of films that lead up to celebrations in October marking the 40th birthday of Filmhouse as a public cinema on Lothian Road. We’ve chosen to screen a film from every year we’ve been bringing the very best cinema to the good people of Edinburgh, and while it is tremendous fun looking back through the history of what has shown here, it was quite an undertaking going through all the old programmes and choosing what to show, and a bit of a personal journey for me as one who started coming here as a customer in the mid-80s (I know, I must have started very young...). At that time, I’d no idea that Filmhouse had only been in existence for less than 10 years – it seemed like such an established, essential institution and impossible to imagine it not existing in a city such as Edinburgh. My only hope is that the cinema is as important today as I felt it was then, and that the giants on whose shoulders we currently stand feel we’re worthy of their legacy. I hope you can join us for at least some of the screenings on this trip down memory lane... And now, back to the now.

  • LACMA Presents …Is James Bond, Co-Organized with LMU's School Of
LACMA presents …Is James Bond, co-organized with LMU’s School of Film and Television, June 9 – September 9, 2012 Exhibition features all twenty-two James Bond opening credit sequences, fourteen of which were created by film title designer Maurice Binder, in celebration of the fiftieth anniversary of the Bond franchise (LOS ANGELES, June 4, 2012) – The Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) presents …Is James Bond, the first exhibition to feature the complete opening credit sequences from twenty-two James Bond films produced by Eon Productions. Co-organized by LACMA and Loyola Marymount University’s School of Film and Television (SFTV), the exhibition celebrates the fiftieth anniversary of one of the most successful and long-lasting film franchises of all time: James Bond. SFTV Dean Stephen Ujlaki says, “Bond’s impact on popular culture is immense, from music to fashion and automobiles, and on the business side, the people who advanced the franchise deserve immense credit, among them LMU alumna Barbara Broccoli, and Eon Productions.” Over the course of fifty years and twenty-two films (soon to be twenty-three with the release of Skyfall), James Bond has gone from Sean Connery to Daniel Craig, from the Soviets to the North Koreans, from M as a man to a woman, from secret nefarious organizations to power-mad tycoons. And while 007 was changing, the opening credit sequence remained constant. “Beginning with Dr. No, the opening credits, created by Maurice Binder, have functioned as pieces of art that comment on the films, while remaining separate from them,” says Elvis Mitchell, curator for Film Independent at LACMA.

As writer- director of such acclaimed films as Magnolia (1999) and There Will Be Blood (2007), Anderson was praised for appearing to have “arrived at his mastery virtually overnight” with his first major release, the 1997 ensemble film Boogie Nights (Gleiberman).
