CHAIRMAN’S REPORT

The 2019/20 financial year and season was another successful one for PCC as it seeks to become (or otherwise remain) the leading cricket club across the Auckland region, as stated in the Club’s 3-year Strategic Plan. I summarise the year as follows:

1. Overview

In terms of playing numbers we were similar to last season with almost 900 players while our successful re-introduction of women’s cricket continued into its 3rd season after a 9-year hiatus. PCC won the highly prestigious ACA Club of the Year Award for the first time in 27 years, and only the 6th time since ACA records began in 1905.

The Club had three players chosen for the BLACKCAPS during the season - , Will Somerville and Mark Chapman. Mark also represented New Zealand A against India A. Those three, plus Ben Horne and ex BLACKCAP Corey Anderson (joining us from Northern Districts), represented the Auckland Aces with merit over the summer. Mark Chapman was awarded Auckland Aces Batsman of the Year.

Our Men’s Premier team won the Hedley Howarth Trophy, ACA’s 2-day cricket competition, for the second time over the past 6 seasons after leading the points table virtually throughout the season. In addition it competed in both the Jeff Crowe Cup (50-over cricket) and T20 finals only to lose narrowly in both. This team went close to winning all 3 playing formats, a feat only achieved once before (by Takapuna CC in 2016/17).

In addition our Men’s 2nd XI came within 2 points of winning the Men’s Prem Reserve Major 2-day competition, finishing a close second to Cornwall, and came second equal in the 50-over competition, both formats having 8 teams competing. Our 3rd XI came third equal in its 2-day competition, and second equal in its 50-over competition, both formats also having 8 teams competing. Our 4th XI won its competition and has been promoted up a grade from next season as a result. All 4 teams performed very strongly, a credit to the captaincy, coaching, management and team spirit of each.

Our Junior rep results were also very pleasing with representation at EDCA level finishing at 40 PCC rep players chosen in total making up 35% of EDCA’s total numbers across all 7 grades (boys and girls).

Our financial results were good despite the impact of COVID-19 resulting in our Terry Jarvis Centre being closed from 25th March and no income being generated from this facility over the last 5 weeks of the financial year. A small profit of $2,822 was recorded overall while we had $128,179 cash in the bank at balance date ($125,576 12 months prior). Our revenue was slightly below prior year at $407,164.

PCC’s performance in meeting a wide range of targets, as set by ACA in our Partnership Agreement with them, was very good with over 90% of targets likely to be met resulting in PCC being one of the leading clubs across the Auckland region in this respect (16 clubs in total).

Volunteer relations were positive overall, this reflective of the efforts and experience of our Junior, Senior and Women’s Chairs and their respective Committees, our Junior Grade Co-ordinators, and our Board.

Finally, the Club benefitted greatly from the services of its Director of Cricket (Phil Horne) in his third full season with us, ably supported by Steve Hurdley as Club Administrator in his 11th consecutive year.

2. Senior Men Playing Results:

ACA titles won:  Men’s Premier: Hedley Howarth Trophy, 2-day competition and overall championship  Men’s 4th XI: 2-day competition and overall championship  PCC Super Eagles: 4a minor championship  Parnell RCC: 1A, T20 Central / East pre-Xmas championship  Parnell Soldiers: 1A, T20 Central / East post-Xmas championship

ACA awards won:

 Most Runs, Premier Women: Yaz Kareem  Most Premier Dismissals, Premier Men: Harry Miller  Highest Score at Eden Park: Mark Chapman  Aces Batsman of the Year: Mark Chapman  Most Positive Premier Grade Club Player: Brad Rodden  Coach of the Year: Ian West

Our Men’s Prem team performed admirably once again and was a credit to the Club, always playing within the spirit of cricket under the inspirational captaincy of Brad Rodden and coaching of Ian West, both in their second year at PCC with their respective roles. Brad went on to win ACA’s Most Positive Premier Grade Club Player (while being voted as Premier Captain of the Year in the prior season), a testament to his strong leadership, positivity and constant sense of fair play and sportsmanship. Ian won ACA’s prestigious Club Coach of the Year Award for the first time, thoroughly deserved given his dedication, planning and attention to detail. In addition Ian coached the Auckland A squad with success throughout the season, a busy summer for him. As team captain and coach respectively they, along with team manager John Fisher, formed a formidable leadership and support group across this team over the season.

As mentioned, our Men's 2nd, 3rd and 4th XI’s all performed strongly, a credit to the following leadership:

 Seconds (Premier Reserves): Razin Bharde (captain) and Roy Goodyear (coach/manager)  Thirds (Senior 3rd Grade): Mehul Chhagan (captain) and Peter Hickman (manager)  Fourths (Senior 7th Grade): James Partridge (captain)

The Club’s President’s Grade team continued to compete strongly in this successful and popular competition, flying the Club’s flag and good name with pride while producing a strong camaraderie over recent years.

I would like to thank Peter Hickman (Senior Chairman) and Ashwin Haran (Club Captain) for their untiring efforts in welcoming newcomers to the Club, keeping tabs on the availability of players, co-ordinating the team selections process each week, and managing the Club’s communication network via Facebook each week.

In addition I would also like to thank a small group of the Men’s Premier team supporters for their very loyal following of the team across the season: Phil Horne, Bryan Haggitt, Craig Speakman and Marc O’Gorman come to mind along with many of the parents and friends of the players. Craig’s large volume of playing photos, across all teams, were posted by himself on our Facebook page diligently each week and appear throughout our Annual Report (yellow book). In addition Lana West’s creation of the PCC Rose Garden, and its attraction of a good number of female supporters, was a welcome addition from February.

Senior Representatives

The following men’s senior players won representative honours over the season:  Lockie Ferguson NZ BLACKCAPS and Auckland Aces  Will Somerville NZ BLACKCAPS and Auckland Aces  Mark Chapman NZ BLACKCAPS and Auckland Aces  Ben Horne Auckland Aces  Corey Anderson Auckland Aces, Auckland A  Ollie Pringle Auckland A  Brad Rodden Auckland A  Jack Parsons Auckland A  Josh Fisher Auckland A  Nathan Robinson Auckland U19  Nikith Perera Auckland U19  Seb Macdonald Auckland U17

3. Female Cricket:

The Club competed for the third year running in ACA’s Women’s Premier and Premier Reserve competitions, a tribute to the determination and focus of PCC Board director Gemma Lord, ably supported by , Stephanie Carr and Shannon Carr as team coaches.

The 2019/20 season was both an exciting and challenging time for female cricket at PCC. A new look coaching panel and an intensive, yet enjoyable, winter programme led by Rob Nicol helped prepare the entire squad for both the Premier and Premier Reserve competitions. The Premier team had their most successful season yet for PCC since the side was re-established within the club 3 years ago, and the Premier Reserves continued to demonstrate their form of the previous 2 seasons. This is a testament to the attitudes and calibre of all our female cricketers currently in the club.

With a steady start to the season, the Premier side found their on-field success just prior to Christmas with 3 consecutive wins in the T20 competition, and a number of representative selections across the entire squad, both junior and senior (see below). With several victories in the 50-over competition for our Premiers, and many T20 wins throughout the season for the Reserves, the second half of the summer brought about many strong individual performances across both grades.

PCC is extremely proud of our female cricketers and the way in which they conduct themselves both on and off the field. In addition, the ladies continue to be great supporters of our men’s senior teams and bring a positive and caring culture to the club. Special mention to Premier player and captain, Stephanie Carr for stepping into the role of head coach for the last quarter of this season, her efforts and commitment to the team have not gone unnoticed.

PCC remains very committed towards the development and growth of girl’s / women’s cricket and we are well placed to take advantage of the new strategic direction of NZ Cricket in also focussing strongly on female participation and high performance in the sport.

The following female players won representative honours over the season:  Olivia Lobb Northern Spirit (Contracted Player)  Shriya Naidu Northern Spirit Squad  Ella Drumm NZ Maori Secondary Schoolgirls  Madison Curran Developing Future Hearts Squad  Yaz Kareem Auckland Under 21  Lexy Bassett Auckland U19  Jess Barker Auckland U19  Emma Irwin Auckland U19  Kate Irwin Auckland U15 (Captain)

4. Junior Playing Results:

ACA titles won (from U-12 to U-16):

 Under 12 Boys, mid-week pre-Xmas T20 competition: Parnell Gold  Under 12 Boys, Limited Over 30 competition: Parnell Rainger

ACA District Tournaments (U-15 to U-19):

In terms of Auckland Districts junior rep cricket EDCA performed strongly once again although the overall winner of the Peter Badley Shield was Central Districts (Cornwall and Ellerslie combined) for the first time in many years. This season saw a significantly changed format across the age groups with the grade 7 and 8 tournaments disbanded (i.e. U-13’s) and more emphasis placed on T20 cricket for development players. EDCA was expertly led once again by PCC’s James Dudson as Chairman for the second year running, while the quality of coaching and general administration remained at a high level. PCC’s relationship with its 2 other EDCA clubs, AUCC and GUCC, remains strong.

Annual junior rep fixtures against neighbouring clubs (grades 3 to 7):

v. Auckland University CC Nov 2019 6 wins, 4 losses v. Howick Pakuranga CC Dec 2019 8 wins, 2 losses v. Cornwall CC Dec 2019 4 wins, 7 losses v. Grafton United CC Feb 2020 4 wins, 4 losses

The Club took part in the second year running of the J T Sparling Super Series against the above 4 clubs - please refer to our Junior Chairman’s Report for more details. These impressive results are reflective of the quality and quantity of the Club’s professional and volunteer coaching. PCC was able to secure the following trophies within the JTS Super Series: Grades 4A and 7A, both handsome trophies now on display in our clubrooms.

I would like to thank the following people for their contributions over the year:  Jeremy Boucher for his strong commitment as our Junior Chairman, now having completed his 4th year in this role.  All volunteers who give up their time to see the Club and their respective team(s) enjoy a happy and successful season.  All Grade Coordinators (Year 1 to Year 8) and Members of the Junior Committee.  James Dudson for his role in representing PCC on the ECDA Committee, EDCA Chairman over the last 2 seasons, selecting EDCA teams, appointing coaches, arranging winter trainings, ensuring EDCA performed well across the range of ACA District Tournaments (boys and girls), arranging trust grant funding, levies to players and clubs, financial control and reporting etc.

5. PCC Board of Directors and Management

The 2019/20 year saw a continuation of the same Board that was in place during the prior year. In addition, Rod Smith has remained as PCC’s President over 2019/20, a role which he has held since 2014 while also being Club Chairman for 8 seasons prior to that. Rod attended our Board meetings upon the invitation of myself. Respective Board roles have been as follows:

 Chairman Craig Presland  Women’s Chair Gemma Lord  Junior Chairman Jeremy Boucher  Senior Men’s Chairman Peter Hickman  Honorary Secretary Craig Speakman  Honorary Treasurer Greg James

In addition, Kelly Baxter became a Board member at last year’s AGM. Board meetings covered 10 workstreams, these as follows along with respective responsibilities for each:

1. On field performance: Craig P, Peter, Gemma 2. Health and Safety All 3. Finance: Greg 4. Facilities and Grounds: Rod, Craig P 5. Marketing and Sponsorship: Kelly 6. Coaching: Greg 7. Female Cricket: Gemma 8. Culture and Diversity All 9. Schools: Jeremy 10. Volunteer Relations: Jeremy, Peter, Gemma

Our Director of Cricket, Phil Horne, has played an active role across on all 10 workstreams over the past 3 years, while he has also attended all Board meetings.

I would like to thank PCC’s hard-working Board, Rod, Phil and Steve for their dedicated efforts and commitment, and absolute passion for PCC and the game itself over the past 12 months. The level of knowledge and experience, as well as ability and willingness to roll their sleeves up and makes things happen, has been impressive.

6. Strategic Plan, 1st January 2020 to 31st December 2022.

In July 2016 our Board, Rod, Bryan and Steve agreed upon a 3-year Strategic Plan after conducting a SWOT analysis across each of the above 10 workstreams as well as seeking feedback from Club Members. As part of this 3-year plan we have set priorities for our resources (time and $ funds), while this plan has been summarized as a one-page document that sits on display in our clubrooms during the season. This plan was reviewed and updated in November 2019, effective from 1st January 2020, and covers key goals and measures across each work stream. In addition the Club has developed a Risk Register as we seek to better understand and mitigate the Club’s risks more effectively.

7. Financial Results

Our financial results were pleasing given the impact of COVID-19 with a small profit of $2,822 being recorded, ($5,562 loss prior year), while the Club had $128,179 in its bank accounts at balance date, ($125,567 prior year).

Capital expenditure included the upgrade of the nearby Martyn Wilson Field in conjunction with St Kentigern School, a concrete base and new astro-turf surface being installed in November 2019.

The Club was prudent in its spending throughout the financial year while capital expenditure was targeted at areas of need. PCC invested 30% of its revenues directly into coaching (30% over the prior year as well), and another 31% into administration (32% prior year), both resulting in a high level of support and value provided to our playing members, parents and volunteers while our player subscriptions have remained competitive with neighbouring clubs. Note that Parnell does not pay players to play, only to coach, unlike a number of other clubs who employ professionals to boost their playing strength.

Our collection of subscriptions, TJC hiring fees, bar takings and event revenues has been diligent.

8. Sponsorship

PCC remains extremely grateful for the support from its 2 key commercial partners in Ascot Radiology and Player Sports, along with all other sponsors. A big thanks to these local businesses for their valued and ongoing contributions which enable the club to provide its high level of coaching and administrative support for its players. We could not provide the same cricket experience for our members without this funding. Ascot Radiology, in particular, has been very loyal to PCC since 2011/12 and we have so much to thank this organisation for.

Other sponsors supporting PCC over 2019/20 were as follows: Steen Nielsen - Ray White Remuera, Mt Eden Chiropractic, Findex, East Imperial, The Turkish Bread Company and The Corner Bar.

9. Coaching

Ian West became PCC’s new Head Coach in May 2018 and has since proven to be a popular, hard-working and successful appointment for the Club, thoroughly deserving his ACA Club Coach of the Year Award for the season just completed. The remainder of our coaching staff included Roy Goodyear, Cam Rope, Ollie Pringle and four capable young English player / coaches in Callum McCarthy, James Hook, Harry Prince and Luke Trimming. All 8 coaches listed proved to be effective and well-respected across our senior and junior players, parents, volunteers and supporters.

10. Facilities

PCC is planning to upgrade its existing pavilion by adding a bar, women’s and men’s toilets, and an outside deck (at ground level), this project in conjunction with Grammar Juniors Rugby. Greg James is currently leading this project.

In terms of the development of the Shore Rd Reserve itself, PCC is now seeking an Auckland Council funded upgrade of Bloodworth Park so that its playing surface and drainage is on a par with Shore Rd. Once competed PCC intends building a 2- storey pavilion, at its own cost, close to the playing boundary of what would become the main playing oval of the club. While we were unsuccessful in gaining Auckland Council funding in October 2019, estimated at around $2.0 million, we have been encouraged to re-apply for funds in October 2020.

Final thanks and welcome

Finally, I would like to thank Phil Horne for his outstanding contribution to the club in his third year as Director of Cricket overseeing the entire operations of PCC. He has been an inspiration to us all with his passion and dedication to PCC and all that the Club stands for and will leave big shoes to fill. We wish you all the best Phil.

Phil has been ably supported by our Club Administrator, Steve Hurdley, now working with us for 9 months of each financial year and in his 11th year with the Club.

Hussain Hanif, who was raised in Auckland and had been working for Cricket Victoria and the Melbourne Renegades in recent years, replaced Phil in late April 2020 following Phil’s resignation.

While the 2019/20 season was a very successful one for the club, led by the performances of our Men’s Premier team, the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic from mid-March left a strange end to the season with both junior and senior cricket cancelled over the last 2 weekends and club prizegiving’s unable to be held in April and most likely postponed until September / October. I am confident that PCC is one of the best administered cricket clubs across the Auckland region if not nationally. Well done Phil and Steve, and a big welcome to Hussain.

We look forward to the season ahead!

Craig Presland

PCC Chairman

15th May 2020.
