Collectively these candidates herald a cultural and political shift to transform the process of running and electing our representatives. Such changes do not occur in a vacuum, nor are they about a singular issue. ADVENTURES IN LIFELONG LEARNING University of Wisconsin - Parkside 900 Wood Road, Box 2000, Kenosha WI 53141-2000 262 595-2793 Dick Gregory & The Civil Rights Movement Friday, February 24, 2017 Tallent Hall, Room 182 10 AM to 12 noon As the nation reflects on African American history during the month of February, this course will offer a unique examination of a figure who played an underappreciated role in the black freedom struggle and other social justice movements that gathered momentum in the second half of the twentieth century. Dick Gregory was the Jackie Robinson of stand up comedy in the early 1960s, and he put his fame, wealth, and public persona at the service of the civil rights movement, partnering with all of the prominent leaders and organizations, and emerging as a leader in his own right by the end of the decade. Professor Edward Schmitt will offer a portrait of this compelling figure, and share aspects of his biographical research on Gregory, including excerpts from interviews he conducted with the comedian/activist this past fall. Edward Schmitt is an Associate Professor of History at UW-Parkside, where he has taught since 2002. He teaches courses on recent U.S. history, African American history, and several other topics. His first book, President of the Other America: Robert Kennedy and the Politics of Poverty, was published in 2010, and he is currently working on a biography of Dick Gregory. From “We Shall Overcome” to “Black Lives Matter”: Learning from the Present, Building on the Past Abstract: The nationwide uprisings that have occurred since the George Floyd murder are a profound reminder that the racial inequities that have existed since the “founding” of the country. People of African descent have constantly been fighting for freedom, equity and equality. They continue to resist carefully structural impediments that are designed to maintain and preserve white privilege and power. I have been involved in an emerging organization at The George Washington Carver High School for Engineering and Science that is working toward achieving equity and awareness in our building and communities. One of the students’ main concerns is a lack of Afrocentric curricula. Much of my teaching career has been devoted to designing and implementing inquiry-based curricula that explicitly connects African and African-American literature, film, history and culture. This particular project emphasizes the roles of women in the classic civil rights movement and the current Black Lives Matter movement. Students will study individuals and create various texts that will serve to educate peers and other members of the school community. This project can be implemented in any context that will emerge this school year, whether it be distance learning, a hybrid model or in- person teaching and learning. Keywords: inquiry-based learning, culturally responsive teaching, collaborative learning, dialogic teaching, civil rights, Black Lives Matter, Black Art, feminist pedagogy. We need to show that whether Donald Trump or Joe Biden are elected, the people will rule from below. We need to build our power to demand the transformational we need. We are living in an opportune time, as has existed previously in the United States when many of the issues people have fought for have come to the forefront, but the two parties disregarded the people. Similar to the abolition movement in the 19th century and the progressive/socialist movement in the early 20th century, this is our moment in the 21st century for systemic changes that fundamentally alter our healthcare system, economy, foreign policy, environmental policy and more. As Kali Akuno of Cooperation Jackson said in our recent Clearing the FOG interview (available Monday), the right- wing is using this time to push through their agenda of corporate bailouts, deregulation, and worker exploitation. If the left doesn’t organize and counter this, the country will continue on its current destructive path. The changes we want won’t come from the top. Both corporate duopoly candidate’s priorities are the wealthy investor class and big business. -
Teaching the March on Washington
Nearly a quarter-million people descended on the nation’s capital for the 1963 March on Washington. As the signs on the opposite page remind us, the march was not only for civil rights but also for jobs and freedom. Teaching the March on Washington O n August 28, 1963, the March on Washington captivated the nation’s attention. Nearly a quarter-million people—African Americans and whites, Christians and Jews, along with those of other races and creeds— gathered in the nation’s capital. They came from across the country to demand equal rights and civil rights, social justice and economic justice, and an end to exploitation and discrimination. After all, the “March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom” was the march’s official name, though with the passage of time, “for Jobs and Freedom” has tended to fade. ; The march was the brainchild of longtime labor leader A. PhilipR andolph, and was organized by Bayard RINGER Rustin, a charismatic civil rights activist. Together, they orchestrated the largest nonviolent, mass protest T in American history. MEMO Published March 25, 2021 • 7 minute read Biden-Like House Candidates Beat Those to Their Left David de la Fuente Senior Political Analyst @dpdelafuente Regardless of how you look at it, President Joe Biden did better than House Democratic candidates in the 2020 elections. Yet while House Democrats across the board underperformed the top of the ticket, and challengers did worse than incumbents, the data is clear that moderate non-incumbent House Democratic candidates fared much better than their leftwing counterparts—by a signicant margin. In fact, leftwing nominees lost more than double the amount of support than moderate Democrats on average compared to Biden, due to some combination of ticket-splitting and under-voting. Let’s look at the national picture of House Democrats general underperformance. Biden defeated Trump 51.3% to 46.9% (4.5 points with rounding), while House Democrats defeated House Republicans 50.8% to 47.7% (3.1 points). That means House Democrats underperformed Biden by a margin of 1.4 points across the country. 1 You can also compare how many Congressional districts Biden won compared to how many House Democrats won. By that measure, House Democrats only underperformed Biden by two districts: Biden won 224 and House Democrats won 222. Of course, there were some split-ticket districts, but not many, with nine choosing Biden and a House Republican and seven choosing Trump and a House Democrat. Generally speaking, House Democratic incumbents did better compared to Biden than non- incumbent candidates. All seven Democrats who won Trump districts were incumbents who had been able to build their own brand. -
