Long-term care providers that fulfill the needs and preferences of the elderly and disabled should be one of the targets for the U.S. health care system. Efforts to transform the institutional culture of nursing homes into one focused on providing “resident-centered care” have attracted wide attention. At the Kansas- based Meadowlark Hills long-term care facility, CEO Steve Shields, a leading proponent of resident-centered care, is working with the Fund to develop a set of tools for other nursing home operators that will enable them to embark on the transformative journey. The 2018 winners are featured in this book and represent a range of housing types, climates, and architectural practices. As recent studies have demonstrated, the health outcomes of Americans can be better anticipated based on their zip code than their genetic code. Financial mobility, educational achievement and other quality of life indicators are also heavily predicated by the location of a person’s residence. Within this context I am particularly proud that these awards represent values that include, but are not limited to, aesthetics. In 2018, the Housing Knowledge Community is transitioning our title to be the Housing and Community Development Knowledge Community, further asserting a commitment to developing knowledge, a network, and a culture that elevates residential architecture that is responsive and relevant to all occupants, considers impacts beyond the borders of a site, and utilizes design as a tool for positive impact. -

Chicago Ave. Final Landmark Recommendation adopted by the Commission on Chicago Landmarks, June 5, 2014 CITY OF CHICAGO Rahm Emanuel, Mayor Department of Planning and Development Andrew J. Mooney, Commissioner The Commission on Chicago Landmarks, whose nine members are appointed by the Mayor and City Council, was established in 1968 by city ordinance. The Commission is re- sponsible for recommending to the City Council which individual buildings, sites, objects, or districts should be designated as Chicago Landmarks, which protects them by law. The landmark designation process begins with a staff study and a preliminary summary of information related to the potential designation criteria. The next step is a preliminary vote by the landmarks commission as to whether the proposed landmark is worthy of consideration. This vote not only initiates the formal designation process, but it places the review of city per- mits for the property under the jurisdiction of the Commission until a final landmark recom- mendation is acted on by the City Council. This Landmark Designation Report is subject to possible revision and amendment dur- ing the designation process.
