The service can be followed in the main booklet, while this week’s hymn numbers, the readings and prayers can be found on the sheet which accompanies this one. Please do join us for coffee in the Chapter House after the service. TODAY The Dean This morning the Dean is preaching at St Saviour’s, Coalpit Heath. The Revd Professor Martin Gainsborough This afternoon, Martin Gainsborough will be installed as an Honorary Canon. Martin is a Professor of Politics in Bristol University and formerly the priest in charge at St Luke’s Barton Hill. He comes to the Cathedral as a Canon and member of Chapter to work with us in our engagement with the city and on questions of ethics and justice. Sacred Space Sacred Space takes place at 6.00pm in the candlelit Eastern Lady Chapel. The theme this evening is ‘The New Commandment’, and everyone is invited. At the end of May, Sacred Space will break for the summer, returning in the autumn. THIS WEEK Henry V Following a highly successful run in the West End, award-winning theatre company Antic Disposition present their critically acclaimed adaptation of Shakespeare’s Henry V here on 25 and 26 April. Tickets are available at anticdisposition.co.uk or by calling 0333 666 3366. Further information can be found on the Cathedral website. Lunchtime Recital On Tuesday 26 April, at 1.15pm, Lucy Hewson (violin) & Imogen Windsor (piano) will give a recital. All are welcome and admission is free. For details of this term’s recitals, please take a programme from the literature table. NEXT WEEK Ascension Day On Thursday 5 May we celebrate the Feast of the Ascension with a Choral Eucharist at 6.00pm sung by the Cathedral Consort. All are welcome. BEYOND Open Fellowship On Tuesday 10 May Canon Martin Gainsborough may widen our horizons by asking the question, The Problems of Development: can Theology help? It follows Evensong at 5.15pm with a shared light supper at 5.55pm. The meeting ends at 7.25pm. Trinity Lunch We are holding a Community Lunch on Trinity Sunday, our Feast of Title, on 22 May rather than on the first Sunday of the month as usual. We invite all our Volunteers to join us on this celebratory occasion. As this is a well-attended and event and numbers are limited, to assist with catering please sign up on the list in the Chapter House by Monday 8 May. There will be no charge for this lunch but any donations will go to the Working Hands charity supporting surgical work in Nepal. GENERAL Friends of Bristol Cathedral By kind permission of the Dean and Mrs Hoyle, the Friends have been invited to drinks at the Deanery on Tuesday 24 May. This took place before we all went up into church to hear the Christmas story, building up the nativity scene as the story unfolded. Just as we had finished singing a few Christmas songs and playing our instruments, Father Christmas arrived. He led everybody back downstairs to enjoy a special Christmas snack before he found a present in his sack for everyone, to the delight of all the young people.     WEST LITTLETON PAROCHIAL CHURCH COUNCIL MINUTES OF THE MEETING HELD ON MONDAY 12 NOVEMBER 2018 AT 7.30 pm AT ST JAMES’S GRANGE Present: Rev Sally Wheeler, Chairman David Adams Carolyn Adams Christopher Bell James Golob Michael Horgan Harry Lawrence John Mackenzie-Grieve Alan Young Sally Young Item 1- Chairman’s introductory remarks The Chairman welcomed everyone to the meeting and, in particular, Harry Lawrence and Sally Young who had agreed to join the PCC. David and Elizabeth Sandeman had moved to Scotland and consequently resigned from the PCC. The Chairman said they had both made a huge contribution to the life of the church and community over the years, with Elizabeth as churchwarden and David as a sidesman and Synod representative. All agreed that they would be sadly missed and the meeting wished them well in their new life in Scotland. The Chairman summarised some of the new appointments in the Diocese. The new Bishop of Bristol, the Right Reverend Vivienne Faull, was now in post and would be visiting the Deanery on the 22 November. The Venerable Christine Froude had retired as the Archdeacon of Malmesbury. Candidates for the post would be interviewed shortly. A new Archdeacon of Bristol would also be appointed shortly. We had a new curate in the Benefice, the Reverend Lynne Godfrey, who would be taking 3 services a month and was expected to remain in post for at least 4 years. The start of 2011 was tinged with sadness at the sudden death of Ted Stocks. Ted was a faithful member of St Matthew’s for many years. Amongst other things he will be remembered for his prayerful wisdom, bible teaching, sketch writing, acting, furniture making and in all his innovative solutions to many of the day-to-day building needs. In May 2011, Tim Snowdon stood down after two-years as warden and we are grateful for all he did in the role as well as his continued support and vision.

Liz Brereton took up this role on 1st October as part of her duties within Ministry Division at Church House Westminster. It is very good to have her with us, but please give her a little while to get her head around all the different aspects of her new role. Retaining our audiences and supporting our company of highly talented dancers, artistic workers and administration staff, together with maintaining core operations while theatres were shut and our major source of income from ticket sales was severely impacted, created immense challenges for us. We are deeply grateful for the encouragement and support we received during this difficult year, which made it possible for the company to restart confidently in 2021.     S ERVICES & M USIC July Welcome This month sees a number of new beginnings and also some endings: We have a new Bishop of Bristol! At the end of last month the election of the Very Revd Vivienne Faull was confirmed and at the start of this month she will be consecrated as a Bishop in St Paul’s Cathedral. We very much look forward to welcoming her to the Diocese in October. We have eleven new deacons and nine new priests! They were ordained by the Bishop of Swindon and will be a great blessing as they serve in parishes across the Diocese. We will be saying farewell to a number of choristers, a Lay Clerk and two Choral Scholars. Their skills have enhanced our worship immeasurably and we are extremely grateful for their dedication, their commitment and their willingness to serve God in this Cathedral. We will miss them, but they leave with our prayers and good wishes as they leave here and move on to new pastures. Many of our highly-trained choristers choose to continue their musical studies in further education, often followed by a career in music. In the autumn the Archdeacon of Malmesbury, the Ven Christine Froude, will retire and at the end of July Christine will preside here at the 10.00am Eucharist. Christine and her husband David, a Lay Canon, have both been a part of Cathedral life for many years and this will give us an opportunity to thank them for their generous support. They leave Bristol with our love and our prayers as they begin this exciting and well-deserved new chapter in their lives.

It includes grant-making trusts specifically based in and targeted at parishes and communities within the Diocese of Bristol, as well as national bodies that aren’t included in the Church of England’s ‘Charitable Grants for Churches’ resource.
