WTFDA MEMBERSHIP SURVEY

In life, we all have expectations: expectations in the products we buy and the companies we buy them from. We also expect certain things from the clubs we join. Expectations vary from person to person. Let’s talk about yours.

As a club member:

1. Does the WTFDA meet your expectations Y/N (If no, please explain) 2. Does the VUD meet your expectations Y/N (If no, why?) 3. If you could change anything regarding the WTFDA, what would you change? 4. If you could change anything about the VUD, what would you change? 5. Is the WTFDA FM Database important to you Y/N 6. Are the WTFDA Forums important to you Y/N 7. Is the WTFDA Bulletin Board important to you Y/N

Do you still expect to be a WTFDA club member two years from now? If you decide not to remain a WTFDA member, what factors would cause you to leave?

We’d like your input! You could print out this survey and mail it back to us. Or, better yet, you could send us an email to [email protected]. Mark #1 through #7 on your email and put a Y or an N next to it. If you have comments, put those in afterwards. I’ll share them with the BoD, the VUD publisher and VUD editors. Thank you!

WLNY-TV on Long Island seeks Special Temporary Authority to move early from their current channel 47 to channel 28. (which is not their post-repack channel)

Channel 28 became available on April 24th, when WNBC moved to channel 36 to share on the WNJU transmitter. WLNY wishes to take over WNBC’s old channel. They expect to remain there until

MAY 2018 ··· 16 ··· TV NEWS August of 2019. At that time, WLNY’s Phase 4 happens in the repack, and they move to their permanent channel 29.

The purpose of the move is to allow T-Mobile to begin operation early on channel 47.

I assume the WSFJ information in is correct. The “paperwork” filed with the FCC says WSFJ is suspending operation on channel 27 at Burlington, ?? (which are the location and RF channel of co-owned WGTW) My information is WGTW has already implemented its sharing agreement with WMGM-TV.

WPHY-CD is currently operating on channel 50. It’s scheduled to move to channel 22 in Phase 4, between June 22nd, 2019 and August 2nd.

WTVE Reading, Penna. is operating a Distributed Transmission System on channel 25. It’s scheduled to begin sharing on the WPHY-CD transmitter by July 23rd. One of the WTVE DTS is located in the Roxborough antenna farm in Philadelphia.

WPHY proposes to move temporarily to channel 25. If granted, it would take over the WTVE transmitter in Roxborough, reducing its power from 126kw to 15kw. It would operate on 25 until its place in the repack comes up, at which time it would move to its permanent channel 22.

The Sioux Falls channel 10 STA application is by Kaylee Lynn Stein. She’s known for filing numerous ungrantable applications for new FM stations in the San Francisco area. (and some wishing to serve San Francisco from transmitter sites in the Pacific Ocean) Do not expect to see FCC approval for this application.

K31GL shared their antenna with a (then) co-owned station. The stations were sold separately; the new owners of the other station moved to a VHF channel. (to avoid displacement in the repack) Since they no longer needed a UHF antenna, they removed it – leaving K31GL with no antenna. K31GL wishes to hang a temporary, smaller, antenna so they can return to the air and keep their license valid while waiting for a permanent new channel in the repack.

Thanks to Matt Sittel for the information on the LPTV moves in Salina, Kansas. These two stations must have Special Temporary Authority as their permanent applications for these channels are listed as still pending.

Utah has earned its own section in this month’s column(grin). Numerous translators in that state have filed to move to new, repack-safe channels. Note that EVERY high-VHF channel will be in use in Helper, Utah.

UPCOMING METEOR SHOWERS DATA FROM THE AMERICAN METEOR SOCIETY amsmeteors.org Eta Aquariids Active from April 19th to May 26th , 2018 (Peak night May 6-7) The Eta Aquariids are a strong shower when viewed from the southern tropics. From the equator northward, they usually only produce medium rates of 10-30 per hour just before dawn. From the equator to 25S they can produce rates of 40-60 per hour just before dawn at maximum. The longer nights in the southern hemisphere allows the radiant to rise higher in their sky. South of 25S the radiant altitude actually decreases. Activity is good for a week centered the night of maximum activity. These are swift meteors that produce a high percentage of persistent trains, but few fireballs. Radiant: 22:32 -1° - ZHR: 55 - Velocity: 42 miles/sec (swift - 66.9km/sec) - Parent Object: 1P/Halley
