i Leader Preparation Lesson Overview

Jesus and Peter: From SIMON to Peter

The transformation of Simon, a Galilean fisherman, to Peter, leader of a religious movement prepared to challenge and defy the Jewish and Roman authorities, is a story of enduring power and has provided hope and inspiration for Christians throughout the ages. In this lesson we will only highlight some key moments in the relationship between Jesus and Simon Peter that caused this transformation.

These stories are:

1. Jesus Calls Peter to “Follow Him” And He Leaves All Behind to become a Fisher of Men 2. Peter Confesses that Jesus is the Messiah - Is Given a New Name - and Then is Tested 3. Peter Denies Jesus and Is Forgiven and Restored Lesson Objectives

Through the stories of Peter and his unique relationship with Jesus we will learn these truths:

1. That when Jesus calls us to follow him we are asked to make him a priority and leave everything behind. 2. That no matter where our faith is Jesus still loves us and invites us to go deeper. 3. That Jesus restores us no matter hwo sinful we are through his death and resurrection 4. We are called - loved - forgiven - and sent out to the world Primary Scripture - Luke 5:1-11 - Matthew 16:13-20 and Matthew 14:22-33 - Luke 22:54-62 - John 21:1-19 Luke 5:1-11

Jesus Calls His First Disciples

5 One day as Jesus was standing by the Lake of Gennesaret,[a] the people were crowding around him and listening to the word of God. 2 He saw at the water’s edge two boats, left there by the fishermen, who were washing their nets. 3 He got into one of the boats, the one belonging to Simon, and asked him to put out a little from shore. Then he sat down and taught the people from the boat.

4 When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into deep water, and let down the nets for a catch.”

5 Simon answered, “Master, we’ve worked hard all night and haven’t caught anything. But because you say so, I will let down the nets.”

6 When they had done so, they caught such a large number of fish that their nets began to break. 7 So they signaled their partners in the other boat to come and help them, and they came and filled both boats so full that

1 Jesus and Peter: From Simon to Peter they began to sink.

8 When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at Jesus’ knees and said, “Go away from me, Lord; a sinful man!” 9 For he and all his companions were astonished at the catch of fish they had taken, 10 and so were James and John, the sons of , Simon’s partners.

Then Jesus said to Simon, “Don’t be afraid; from now on you will fish for people.” 11 So they pulled their boats up on shore, left everything and followed him. Matthew 16:13-20 and Matthew 14:22-33

Peter Declares That Jesus Is the Messiah

13 When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say the Son of Man is?”

14 They replied, “Some say ; others say ; and still others, or one of the prophets.”

15 “But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?”

16 Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.”

17 Jesus replied, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by flesh and blood, but by my Father in heaven. 18 And I tell you that you are Peter,[a] and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades[b] will not overcome it. 19 I will give you the of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be[c] bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be[d] loosed in heaven.”20 Then he ordered his disciples not to tell anyone that he was the Messiah. Luke 22:54-62

Peter Disowns Jesus

54 Then seizing him, they led him away and took him into the house of the high priest. Peter followed at a distance. 55 And when some there had kindled a fire in the middle of the courtyard and had sat down together, Peter sat down with them. 56 A servant girl saw him seated there in the firelight. She looked closely at him and said, “This man was with him.”

57 But he denied it. “Woman, I don’t know him,” he said.

58 A little later someone else saw him and said, “You also are one of them.”

“Man, I am not!” Peter replied.

59 About an hour later another asserted, “Certainly this fellow was with him, for he is a Galilean.”

60 Peter replied, “Man, I don’t know what you’re talking about!” Just as he was speaking, the rooster crowed. 61 The Lord turned and looked straight at Peter. Then Peter remembered the word the Lord had spoken to him: “Before the rooster crows today, you will disown me three times.” 62 And he went outside and wept

2 Jesus and Peter: From Simon to Peter bitterly.

John 21: 1-19

Jesus and the Miraculous Catch of Fish

21 Afterward Jesus appeared again to his disciples, by the Sea of .[a] It happened this way: 2 Simon Peter, Thomas (also known as Didymus[b]), Nathanael from in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two other disciples were together. 3 “I’m going out to fish,” Simon Peter told them, and they said, “We’ll go with you.” So they went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing.

4 Early in the morning, Jesus stood on the shore, but the disciples did not realize that it was Jesus.

5 He called out to them, “Friends, haven’t you any fish?”

“No,” they answered.

6 He said, “Throw your net on the right side of the boat and you will find some.” When they did, they were unable to haul the net in because of the large number of fish.

7 Then the whom Jesus loved said to Peter, “It is the Lord!” As soon as Simon Peter heard him say, “It is the Lord,” he wrapped his outer garment around him (for he had taken it off) and jumped into the water. 8 The other disciples followed in the boat, towing the net full of fish, for they were not far from shore, about a hundred yards.[c] 9 When they landed, they saw a fire of burning coals there with fish on it, and some bread.

10 Jesus said to them, “Bring some of the fish you have just caught.”11 So Simon Peter climbed back into the boat and dragged the net ashore. It was full of large fish, 153, but even with so many the net was not torn. 12 Jesus said to them, “Come and have breakfast.” None of the disciples dared ask him, “Who are you?” They knew it was the Lord.13 Jesus came, took the bread and gave it to them, and did the same with the fish. 14 This was now the third time Jesus appeared to his disciples after he was raised from the dead.

Jesus Reinstates Peter

15 When they had finished eating, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?”

“Yes, Lord,” he said, “you know that I love you.”

Jesus said, “Feed my lambs.”

16 Again Jesus said, “Simon son of John, do you love me?”

He answered, “Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.”

Jesus said, “Take care of my sheep.”

17 The third time he said to him, “Simon son of John, do you love me?”

3 Jesus and Peter: From Simon to Peter Peter was hurt because Jesus asked him the third time, “Do you love me?” He said, “Lord, you know all things; you know that I love you.”

Jesus said, “Feed my sheep. 18 Very truly I tell you, when you were younger you dressed yourself and went where you wanted; but when you are old you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will dress you and lead you where you do not want to go.” 19 Jesus said this to indicate the kind of death by which Peter would glorify God. Then he said to him, “Follow me!” Background on Peter

4 Jesus and Peter: From Simon to Peter Teaching Prep

We’re going to look at one of Jesus’ disciples named Simon, or better known as Peter. (In Greek, Peter means “rock.”) Peter had the privilege of being with Jesus during His time here on earth. Over the span of a few years in ministry together, they traveled, ate, shared stories, slept, served others, laughed, and hung out almost every day. He passionately sought to follow Jesus. At one point, when many people turned away from Jesus’ radical teachings, Peter speaks up and says, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life, and we have believed, and have come to know, that you are the Holy One of God.” (:60-71 ESV)

Peter is the most mentioned of the disciples in the accounts. This helps paint a picture of Peter’s personality and attributes. Peter was enthusiastic, eager to learn, a leader, passionate, quick to speak, and often the ﬔrst to act. Peter was also brash, impulsive, and when tested was all too frail and human.

Peter sought unique experiences and was privileged to have exclusive experiences with Jesus that most of the other disciples didn’t have. Peter was with Jesus at the transﬔguration (Matt 17), in the house of a dead girl raised to life (Luke 8:49-56), and before Jesus’ arrest in the Garden of Gethsemane (Matt 26:36-46). Peter set himself apart from the other disciples and may have felt a sense of entitlement and privilege. At times, Peter had a sense of arrogance.

We’re going to take a closer look at a few events in the life of Peter during Jesus’ life here on the earth. Identify Peter’s characteristics and personality as we walk through the stories.

These stories are:

1. Jesus Calls Peter to “Follow Him” And He Leaves All Behind to become a Fisher of Men 2. Peter Confesses that Jesus is the Messiah - Is Given a New Name - and Then is Tested 3. Peter Denies Jesus and Is Forgiven and Restored

Jesus’ Call to Peter: Luke 5:1-11

VIDEO - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=60YCt10Zgyo

Mark and Matthew’s description of the call of Peter and Andrew is brief. Jesus sees them, calls them and they obey. The gospel writers clearly intend to portray Jesus’ authority as the one who calls and the appropriate response to this call. For our purposes it is the content of the call that is important; it is first and foremost a call to follow Jesus, to be in relationship with him. This is the foundation of all the other aspects of the relationship that we will explore. In fact the call to follow Jesus is so important that Jesus’ last words to Peter, recorded this time in John’s gospel, are also ‘Follow me.’

In LUKE the encounter is more detailed. Luke 5:1-11 - here Jesus is teaching to a crowd when he notices some fishermen in their boats along the shore. He gets into Simon Peter’s boat and tells him to row out into the sea. Peter tells him” Master, we have worked these waters all day - there are no fish.” Yet Jesus insists that he should cast his nets again. They caught so many fish that the nets almost ripped. Simon Peter then falls to his knees and declares to Jesus that he is a sinner and not worthy. But Jesus tells him not to worry and that from now onward he will be a fisher of men.

In JOHN - we get a completely different version of the call to Peter. Here Jesus has already called or gathered some disciples through his deeds and teachings. One of them is Andrew - who excitedly invites his brother Simon Peter because “we have found the Messiah”.Jesus looked at him and said, “You are Simon son of John. You will be called Cephas” (which, when translated, is Peter[a]).

5 Jesus and Peter: From Simon to Peter Significance of the Call of Simon Peter

• Jesus calls us in the midst of our daily lives • He wants a response • He calls us to commit to the call and leave all behind • He doesn’t tell us where we are going - and the adventure begins.

Peter Declares that Jesus Is Messiah - Jesus Changes His Name - And Peter Is Tested - Matthew 16:13-20 and Matthew 14:22-33

VIDEO - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nsdKAG1EoSI

In Matthew Jesus asks the disciples who people say that he is. Some of the disicples reply that some say that he is John the Baptist or Elijah or one of the prophets. But Simon Peter says that he is the messiah sent by God. Jesus then blesses him and changes his name to Peter - Petros - or rock. He then declares that Peter will be a leader and upon him he will build his church.

Peter gets Jesus’ point and Jesus praises him for it! Christ also reveals the plan of building His church, which is the assembly of all believers. The solid foundation on which Christ would build His church was Peter’s strong, rocklike confession of faith, in which he proclaimed that Jesus is “the Christ, the Son of the living God” (v 16). This is why Jesus changes his name - to emphasize that Peter has changed and has been given a great responsibility.

Jesus does this despite Peter showing moments of doubt or fear like when he began to sink when invited to walk on water. Peter is all of us - we have faith but when tested we sometimes fail to live into this faith.

Peter is all too human - he agrees to follow Jesus but throughout his life he is brash - proud - headstrong - stubborn - haughty - and yet also full of doubt and fear.

Yet Jesus loved Peter and commissioned Peter to become a great leader among the disicples but also in the early Church.

The story of the Jesus Walking on Water and inviting Peter to do so too illustrates how Jesus loves us and strengthens our faith despite our fear or doubt. Peter Denies Jesus - Is Forgiven - And Restored

Luke 22:54-62 - John 21:1-19

VIDEO - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HWL2MDsGymE and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EhoFEuw2GPA

We are remember that Peter denied Jesus three times after his arrest. What we often forget is the courage that it took for Peter to follow after Jesus when he was arrested. Peter risked everything by following so closely but he had to know what was happening to Jesus.

Yet when confronted by a soldier and others nearby Peter notoriously denies that he knows or that he was a follower of Jesus.

6 Jesus and Peter: From Simon to Peter Oh what agony must Peter have felt once the rooster crowed and Peter realizes that Jesus predicted this denial. Peter who has been he must fervent and vocal disiciple. Peter the rock - the one who was with him from the beginning.

Peter and John bravely risk their life by following Jesus after his arrest, knowing that someone may recognize them as accomplices of Jesus, the treasonous revolutionary facing trial. Peter’s bravery falters when his association with Jesus is put into question. Peter, quick to confess loyalty to Jesus with his mouth, allowed the concern for his self-protection to abandon that loyalty and deny Christ.

Yet the story doesn't end there with Peter's shame and failure. Because Jesus came to redeem us from our frail humanity. Jesus dies and then rises again and in doing so the sins and failures of Peter are wiped away.

Peter goes to the tomb to discover that it is empty. And Jesus later appears to Peter while he was fishing. At first the disciples do not recognize him but after being told to cast their nets on the other side of the boat only to find a gaggle of fish - Peter jumps into the water and declares that the man at the shore is Jesus.

Then Jesus restores Peter by confirming his love for Peter through three questions and commissions:

• Do You Love Me - then feed my lambs • Do You Love Me - then take care of my sheep • Do You Love Me - then feed my sheep.

Then he is told to FOLLOW HIM.

All of this story connects the original call of Simon Peter to this subsequent restoration.

So Peter is our perfect example for us of how to live into the call and challenge of following Jesus.

Through the stories of Peter and his unique relationship with Jesus we will learn...

As Peter put down his nets and accepted the call to be a "fisher of me" so when Jesus calls us to follow him we are asked to make him a priority and leave everything behind.

As Peter was confident of his faith and commitment to Jesus there still was lingering doubts and fears yet Jesus still loved him so that no matter where our faith is Jesus still loves us and invites us to go deeper into a relationship with him.

As Peter who struggled with doubt and fear still declared Jesus to be Lord and Messiah and even when he failed and denied him Jesus forgave him and commissioned him to do more so we know that Jesus restores us no matter how sinful we are through his death and resurrection.

As Peter lived the faith - struggled with his faith - and later denied his faith, Jesus still buildt a church upon his strength and loyalty to him. So we are called - loved - forgiven - and sent out to the world.

Ever wonder if Jesus loves us "JUST THE WAY WE ARE"?

Come to Ignite this Sunday and learn how Jesus loves us dispite our doubts and fears. Just like the disciple Peter! Parent Email

Please encourage your youth to go to his/her Ignite Small Group this Sunday!

Our lesson this week explores the relationship between Jesus and Peter. We will learn that the ordinary Simon will become the leader Peter through the love and forgiveness of our savior Jesus Christ.

8 Lesson Guide Getting Things Started (optional)

Welcome: Invite each student to your circle as they arrive. Once everyone is there then welcome the group back to Ignite Small Groups.

Highs and Lows: (optional) Invite each student to share their highs and lows from the previous two weeks. Pay special attention to what they say and consider praying especially for some of their lows during the prayer later in the session.

GETTING STARTED:

Say Something Like: What name were you called when you were in serious trouble with one of your parents? For me it was Stephen Coffey Terry - my WHOLE name meant that there was thunder coming.

Names by which we are called add significance and weight to the impending encounter and even the relationship. Your parent is inferring - “Child which I gave this name - you are in for it now!” or “Child I gave you this name and only by the grace of God will you be keeping it”

ASK:

1. Go around the circle and share what name your parent/s would call you when you were in big trouble. 2. Now what name or nickname would they call you when everything was good - or they were especially loving or proud of you? For me it was Stevie - or honeybug - even my dad called me that. Ugg…

Say Something Like: In this lesson we are going to take a closer look at the relationship between Jesus and Peter. Peter who was originally named Simon. Jesus would change his name and he would change Peter.

Let’s first figure out who Peter is. Teaching Points

ASK:

1. What do we know about Peter? Let’s make a list of everything we know about him. Who is he - where is he from - who is his family - and what did he do for a living? (Simon Peter is from Galilee - He is a fisherman - He is the brother of Andrew - another disciple of Jesus - He is married and his mother in law lives with him. Jesus seems to favor him for leadership.) 2. What kind of person is Simon? (Impulsive - Headstrong - Brash - Quick to act and judge - Courageous)

Say Something Like: Tonight we are going to look more closely at 3 of the important stories of Peter and his relationship with Jesus. These stories are:

1. Jesus Calls Peter to “Follow Him” 2. Peter Confesses that Jesus is the Messiah and Then Is Tested 3. Peter Denies Jesus and Is Forgiven and Restored

9 Jesus and Peter: From Simon to Peter We will learn these important truths:

1. That when Jesus calls us to follow him we are asked to make him a priority and leave everything behind. 2. That no matter where our faith is Jesus still loves us and invites us to go deeper. 3. That Jesus restores us no matter what our sin is through his death and resurrection 4. We are called - loved - forgiven - and sent out to the world

READ: Luke 5:1-11 - Jesus Calls Peter

VIDEO: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=60YCt10Zgyo

ASK: Let's explore this passage and story more deeply...

1. What does Jesus do when he sees Simon Peter's boat at the water's edge while he had been teaching the crowd? (Vss. 2 & 3 - He gets into SImon Peter's boat to teach more to the crowd). 2. Why do you think he decided to get into Simon's boat? (So he could be heard by more of the crowd - or - because he wanted to engage Simon Peter.) 3. After teaching Jesus tells Simon Peter to go out further into the sea so they can fish. What is Simon Peter's response? (vs 5 - He tells Jesus that they had been fishing all night and that there were no fish to be caught. But that he would do it because Jesus asked.) 4. Why do you think SImon Peter said YES to fishing more with Jesus in his boat? (Maybe because Jesus had showed authority in his teaching. Or that Simon Peter was curious and wanted to spend more time with Jesus.) 5. What did Simon Peter say and do after they caught so many fish? (vss. 8 & 9 - He tells Jesus to go because he is not worthy because he is a sinful man. He obviously can see that Jesus is a holy man.) 6. Jesus then told Peter to not be afraid and that from now on Simon Peter will be - what did Simon Peter do? (vs. 11 - so they pulled their boats onto shore, left everything and followed him".)

Say Something Like: Jesus comes to Simon Peter in his everyday life and circumstance. He then lets him witness and listen to his teaching. Then he performs a powerful action that further convinces Simon Peter that Jesus speaks with authority - through word and deed. Finally, Jesus invites him to follow him. What does Peter do? He leaves everything behind and goes with Jesus. He doesn't know what the future lies ahead but he listens to Jesus anyway. Very courageous.

READ: Matthew 16:13-20 - Peter Confesses Who Jesus Is

VIDEO: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nsdKAG1EoSI

ASK:

1. Jesus asks his disciples who the people say that he is. What were their answers? (vss. 13 & 14 - John the Baptist - Elijah - one of the prophets.) 2. What was the answer that Simon Peter gives when asked "Who do you say that I am" by Jesus? (vs. 16 - You are the Christ, the son of the living God".) 3. How did Jesus respond to Peter's declaration and confession? (vss. 17-19 - Jesus blessed him and then changed his name to Peter (Petros) and said that he would build his church upon him. He would give him the keys of heaven and he would have powers on earth.)

Say Something Like: So Simon, the simple fisherman, becomes Peter, the rock and leader upon whom the future church will be built. Jesus shows great trust in Peter to declare him to be blessed. Yet Simon Peter had

10 Jesus and Peter: From Simon to Peter already showed Jesus that he can be fearful and full of doubt.)

READ: Matthew 14: 22-32

Say Something Like: Jesus comes to the disciples during the storm to show them his saving power. Peter - as Peter does - got so excited and filled with wonder that he decided to go out onto the water with Jesus. Jesus tells him not to fear - and Peter tells him to call him onto the water. Peter starts to walk on the water but then becomes afraid and sinks.

ASK:

Why do you think Peter became afraid and sank? (He started to doubt. His faith was not strong enough to overcome his fear.)

Say Something Like: Here we are reminded how human Peter is and how frail and young his faith is. Within a couple of chapters Peter makes his declaration that Jesus is the Christ, the . While Peter is with him he has heard great teaching and witnessed healings and . His faith is strengthened because of his closeness to Jesus.

If our faith is full of doubt or fear or seems weak, by getting closer to Jesus and his word we too can strengthen and deepen our faith. We just must be willing to get welcome Jesus into our daily lives and follow his word and example.

Let's take a look at one more story.

READ: Luke 22: 54-62 - Peter Denies Jesus

Say Something Like: We all know this scene very well. Peter denies Jesus after Jesus is arrested and taken to Pilate. Peter follows the soldiers from a distance and then while waiting by a fire he is recognized. This is the same Peter who boldly walked on water - who professed that Jesus was the Christ - the son of God - who courageously fought with the soldiers who tried to arrest Jesus.

ASK:

Why did Peter deny Jesus? (fear for himself)

Say Something Like: We constantly deny Christ when we sin. Sometimes we can have the best of intentions or can be deeply devoted and seeking to follow God, only to ﬔnd ourselves faltering as Christ’s witnesses.

Pause to Re﬒ect: (Allow for some silent re﬒ection on each of the statements below. Read them slowly and pause between statements. If your group is willing to share, take the time to do so.)

1. Think of a time when you denied Christ out of fear of what others might think or say about you. 2. Think of a time when “the rooster crowed” in your life - when you were aware of your sin or mistakes. 3. How do you feel when you fail or sin or deny Jesus?

Say Something Like: And now for the REST OF THE STORY...

Jesus is tried - tortured - put on a cross - and killed. But death had no grip on him and he rose again after three days.

11 Jesus and Peter: From Simon to Peter Peter and John come to the tomb after Mary tells the disciples that Jesus is risen. And in John 21 Jesus appears to the disciples when they are fishing. Again Jesus uses Peter's boat to reveal himself to Peter and the others.

VIDEO: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EhoFEuw2GPA

Say Something Like: Peter is fully restored dispite his weak faith and denials. Jesus offers him GRACE through his life - death - and resurrection. And He gives us this same grace.

Through the stories of Peter and his unique relationship with Jesus we know these truths:

1. That when Jesus calls us to follow him we are asked to make him a priority and leave everything behind. 2. That no matter where our faith is Jesus still loves us and invites us to go deeper. 3. That Jesus restores us no matter how sinful we are through Grace. 4. And because of this grace we are called to go out into the world to love and serve in Jesus' name! Summary
