Benjamin Britten: art song, a synthesis of words and music — issues and approaches to text-setting Paul Higgins The clarity of verbal expression evident throughout Benjamin Britten’s (1913-1976) art songs serves to highlight the central role which the setting of pre-existing written poetic texts occupies in his compositional process and in the aesthetic appreciation of his interpretation. For Britten, text acts initially as a source of musical imagination, but it also provides the composer with a framework with which to express musically his selected, literary-based ideas. To place Britten’s contribution against the backdrop of an important musicological debate, it is necessary to clarify a number of key issues. Firstly, text-setting is often loosely perceived as the composition of music of a pre-existing written text, yet in Britten this approach has been expanded to incorporate the process whereby music and text are simultaneously generated. A good example of this is Britten’s close collaboration with W.H. Auden in the song cycle Our Hunting Fathers op.8 (1936),1 in which Auden not only wrote two poems but also selected and modernised three other poems, specifically for Britten to set to music. Secondly, that text-setting is a broader concern than the activity of mere text underlay and is significant to all text-based vocal music: its study also involves syntactic and semantic considerations. Syntactic concerns make reference to the musical response of the work to the structure of the source text, at both the level of overall form, and sentence and word patterns. -

Winner of the Nikolai Rubinstein Piano Competition and a pupil of Maria João Pires and Dmitri Alexeev, award-winning Russian-British pianist and conductor Petr Limonov frequently performs across Europe and the UK, having collaborated with, among others, Boris Berezovsky, Maria João Pires, Nicola Benedetti, Laura van der Heijden, Jennifer Pike, Leonard Elschenbroich, Natalie Clein and Van Kujik Quartet. He has recorded for Decca, Onyx Classics, Chandos and Champs Hill labels; the “1948” album, recorded with Laura van der Heijden, received the “Edison Klassiek” award in 2018 and the BBC “Newcomer of the Year” award in 2019. Petr’s notable appearances include La Roque d’Antheron festival (Boris Berezovsky’s Carte Blanche, broadcast by radio France Musique), Wigmore Hall, Cadogan Hall, Kings Place, St Martin-in-the-Fields, Southbank Cen- tre, the Great Hall of Moscow Conservatory, a recital in The Duke’s Hall for HRH Prince Charles, iTunes Festival, TV appearances for BBC Proms Extra, Podium Witteman and broadcasts for BBC Radio 3 and “Culture” TV channel (Russia). In 2017, his arrangement of the Auld Lang Syne (from Nicola Benedetti’s “Homecoming” album, Decca, 2014) was performed in the Albert Hall at the BBC Proms. His repertoire stretches from Orlando Gib- bons to Arvo Pärt. Born in Moscow, Petr started playing the piano at the age of 5. A year later he entered the prestigious Moscow Central Music School, where he studied under the guidance of Siavush Gadjiev, Valery Piasetsky and, later, Andrei Pisarev. After winning First Prize at the Nikolai Rubin- stein International Piano Competition in Paris he started giving con- certs throughout Europe and Russia, supported by the Vladimir Spivakov International Foundation. -

Obituary notices will be found on other pages, but the loss of our founder-President, Sir Adrian Boult, is something we all feel keenly. His encouragement meant a great deal to us, particularly in the difficult early years. Abroad too his peissing was noted with very great regret. The New York Times carried a long obituary by Edivard Rothstein spread across three columns. A member in Toronto tells us that at the end of a concert in the new Toronto concert hall the con ductor, Andrew Davis, turned to the audience and informed them of Sir ^ Adrian's death. He then conducted the orchestra in tribute in the slow movement of Elgar's Serenade for Strings. -
