They have high commercial value coupled with increasing global production and trade. Sea cucumbers, informally named as bêche-de-mer, or gamat, have long been used for food and folk medicine in the communities of Asia and Middle East. Nutritionally, sea cucumbers have an impressive profile of valuable nutrients such as Vitamin A, Vitamin B1 (thiamine), Vitamin B2 (riboflavin), Vitamin B3 (niacin), and minerals, especially calcium, magnesium, iron and zinc. A number of unique biological and pharmacological activities including anti-angiogenic, anticancer, anticoagulant, anti-hypertension, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antioxidant, antithrombotic, antitumor and wound healing have been ascribed to various species of sea cucumbers. Therapeutic properties and medicinal benefits of sea cucumbers can be linked to the presence of a wide array of bioactives especially triterpene glycosides (saponins), chondroitin sulfates, glycosaminoglycan (GAGs), sulfated polysaccharides, sterols (glycosides and sulfates), phenolics, cerberosides, lectins, peptides, glycoprotein, glycosphingolipids and essential fatty acids. -

Pacunski2 1 Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife, Point Whitney Shellfish Laboratory, 1000 Point Whitney Road, Brinnon, WA 98320, USA 2 Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife, Olympia, WA, USA Although the sea cucumber Parastichopus californicus has been commercially exploited in the eastern Pacific since the 1970s, stock assessment has been hampered by a lack of life history data typically used in age- or size-struc- tured models. Likewise, the lack of a long time series of catch-effort data reflecting ÔequilibriumÕ conditions has precluded the use of many classic surplus production models. We present a simple surplus production model for Parastichopus which relies on a time series of catch and biomass estimates in the San Juan Islands. Harvestable bio- mass was estimated in two consecutive years with an underwater video method, systematically sampling along the shoreline at depths up to 40 m. Additional biomass estimates were made using dive survey data and a Leslie declining catch-per-effort technique. An independent dive survey biomass estimate which related observed declines in sea cucumber density to known catch came within 10 per cent of the corresponding video estimate. We fit a Schaefer surplus production model to these biomass estimates and the known catch during a 5-year period. -

University of Durban-Westville, Private Bag X54001, Durban, 4000 Republic of South Africa Received 8 November 1990; accepted 3 May 1991 The southern African dendrochirotid holothurians of the family Cucumariidae (sensu Pawson & Fell, 1965) are revised and a new genus Pseudoaslia is erected to accommodate Cucumaria tetracentriophora Heding, 1938, which possesses a combination of slender forked rods and four-holed knobbed buttons as body wall deposits. In addition, Pentacta squamosa Cherbonnier, 1970 is declared a synonym of Ocnus capensis (rheel, 1886); Cucumaria rigidapeda Cherbonnier, 1952 and C. corbula Cherbonnier, 1953 are referred respectively to the genera Trachythyone and Ocnus; and Pseudoco/ochirus violaceus Theel, 1886 and a specimen tentatively referred to as Trachythyone parva (Ludwig, 1875) are recorded for the first time from southern Africa. These changes result in the total number of cucumariid holothurians now known from southern Africa to 10 genera and 18 species. All species are keyed, briefly described andlor discussed, and their local distributions mapped. Three new cucumariid holothurians, Pseudocnus sentus, Squamocnus niveus and Squamoc- nus luteus, are described from Stewart Island and Fiordland. Five New Zealand and Australian cucumariid species, previously referred to the European genus Ocnus Forbes and Goodsir, are assigned to other genera. Squamocnus brevidentis (Hutton) is a new combination. Australoc- nus and Psolidocnus are new genera, and Australocnus calcareus (Dendy), Australocnus occiduus (O’Loughlin and O’Hara), Psolidocnus amokurae (Mortensen), Psolidocnus farquhari (Mortensen) and Psolidocnus sacculus (Pawson) are new combinations. Ocnus brev- identis var. carnleyensis (Dendy) is not recognised. The status of a syntype of Squamocnus brevidentis (Hutton) is discussed. A neotype is established for Australocnus calcareus (Dendy). Trachythyone bollonsi (Mortensen) is synonymised with Psolidiella nigra Mortensen. The southern Australian Plesiocolochirus ignavus (Ludwig) is reported from New Zealand. S. brevidentis and S. niveus sp. nov. are brood-protecting. A key is provided for the New Zealand species of Cucumariidae.
