EAP Development Continues in Mackay The 2008 Australian Country Cricket Championships (ACCC) were held in Mackay, Queensland from 6- 17 January 2008. In the fifth year of parti cipation in the ACCC, the ICC East Asia-Pacific (EAP) Development Program’s representative team again benefited enormously from the experience of competing in Australia’s premier competition for country-based players. An integral component of the EAP High Performance Program, the ACCC provides the region’s elite players with the opportunity to experience multi-day cricket, natural turf wickets and high quality opposition. The EAP team was again selected following a two-week program held in November at Cricket Australia’s Centre of Excellence. While several players returned from previous campaigns, this year’s team took on a fresh look with four emerging players selected for their first ACCC. EAP star players John Ovia (right) and Dunu Eliaba (left). Disappointingly, only three of the five scheduled matches were completed, with heavy rain intervening during the second week of the tournament. Both Queensland and New South Wales remained undefeated however it was the latter, with greater bonus points, who were ultimately crowned Champions. Despite not recording a victory, the EAP team was again competitive and produced some exciting cricket at various stages throughout the tournament. In particular, the development of some of the region’s younger players was encouraging and should provide a lasting foundation for higher performance upon their return to home countries and ICC World Cricket League events. Dunu Eliaba (Cook Islands) and John Ovia (Papua New Guinea) were both rewarded for high quality performances with Australian Country XI selection. The latter recorded his first ACCC century with 119 not out against host Queensland. Unfortunately, the feature match between the Australian Country XI and Queensland Bulls was abandoned due to wet weather. Rising all-rounder Andrew Mansale (Vanuatu) also had an excellent tournament while 19-year-old pace bowler Jacob Mado (Papua New Guinea) showed ple nty of promise and finished the tournament as the team’s leading wicket-taker. www.icc-eap-cricket.com News Flash – February 2008 Australian Country Cricket Championships - Match Summaries Round 1 vs. Western Australia EAP 10/218 (Ovia 75) and 0/40 lost to WA 10/265 (Mado 3/37, Amini 3/51) EAP’s Andrew Mansale is dismissed.
