Descendants of GEORGE KIDD

Generation 1

1. GEORGE KIDD-1[1] was born about 1750.

Notes for GEORGE KIDD: General Notes: Information based on research conducted by Franklin Kidd, late of Shelford England. It was obtained from Ryan Kidd through James Kidd, copy in the Prokasy library. The birthyear is an estimate.

In Monart, Templeshambo Parish, Commissioners Index Volume 70, p. 2405 there is a record indicating that George Kidd had made a claim for cash, hats, and wool and household goods on November 16, 1798. These claims were for losses caused by rebels in the Wexford rising of 1798. The claim was rejected.

GEORGE KIDD and unknown spouse married. They had the following children:

2. i. GEORGE KIDD[2] was born about 1780 in Carnew, County Wicklow, Ireland. He married ELIZABETH HAWKINS on 06 Aug 1821 in Templeshambo, County Wexford, Ireland[3]. He died in 1862.

Generation 2

2. GEORGE KIDD-2 (GEORGE-1)[2] was born about 1780 in Carnew, County Wicklow, Ireland. He died in 1862.

Notes for GEORGE KIDD: General Notes: George was a farmer (stated on the marriage certificate of his son Joseph). At the time of his marriage to Elizabeth, he was living in Ballycanew, County Wexford.

ELIZABETH HAWKINS[4] was born about 1797 in Aughathlappa, County Wexford, Ireland. She died on 13 Jan 1852.

GEORGE KIDD and ELIZABETH HAWKINS were married on 06 Aug 1821 in Templeshambo, County Wexford, Ireland[3]. They had the following children:

3. i. JOSEPH KIDD[2] was born about 1823 in Monart Parish, County Wexford, Ireland[5]. He married MARY WHEELOCK on 01 Dec 1847 in St. Nicholas Without, Dublin, Ireland[6]. He died on 27 Jan 1891 in Lakewood, Cuyahoga County, Ohio[7].

ii. Alice Kidd[8]. She married Henry Bustard on 30 May 1848 in St. Werburgh, Dublin, Ireland.

Notes for Alice Kidd: General Notes: Alice was a servant of Dubnlin Castle.

Generation 3

3. JOSEPH KIDD-3 (GEORGE-2, GEORGE-1)[2] was born about 1823 in Monart Parish, County Wexford, Ireland[5]. He died on 27 Jan 1891 in Lakewood, Cuyahoga County, Ohio[7].

Notes for JOSEPH KIDD: General Notes: Page 1 of 32 Saturday, March 24, 2012 6:06:14 PM Descendants of GEORGE KIDD

Generation 3 (con't) General Notes: Joseph held in tenancy about 65 acres of land (total valuation of land and buildings 28 pounds, 10 shillings) in Aughathlappa, Monart Parish, Barony of Scarwalsh, County Wexford in 1853 (From Griffiths Valuation of 1850, p. 114, courtesy Leslie Boxwell). According to baptism records in the Killane Register, Joseph was "of Cairn" in 1860. Based on ship manifest records (James Kidd Email of March 2, 2004), the family came from Liverpool, England on the City of Washington and arrived in New York on November 27, 1866. The manifest lists Joseph as James. Whether James is an alternative (or middle) name for Joseph, or is a relative coming over with the family after Joseph had already arrived is an open quesiton, though the fact that there was no James Kidd living in Ohio who was in the age range of 41 to 60 at the time of the 1870 census suggests that 'James' is 'Joseph.'

Joseph and his family were living in Rockport Township at the time of the 1870 census and apparently lived there from about 1865 to 1891. At his death (of typhoid pneumonia) Joseph was living at 289 Viaduct in Cleveland.

MARY WHEELOCK daughter of ISAAC WHEELOCK and CATHERINE BOXWELL[9] was born on 21 May 1827 in Killurin, County Wexford, Ireland[10]. She died on 20 Sep 1902 in Lakewood, Cuyahoga County, Ohio[7].

Notes for MARY WHEELOCK: General Notes: Mary was living with Christopher and Mary Ann Malle (her son-in-law and daughter) at the time of her death. She died of typhoid pneumonia.

JOSEPH KIDD and MARY WHEELOCK were married on 01 Dec 1847 in St. Nicholas Without, Dublin, Ireland[6]. They had the following children:

i. George A. Kidd[9] was born in Oct [11]. He married Jennie A. Terbrack between 1881-1882 in Cuyahoga County, Ohio[11, 12]. He died on 10 Jan 1916 in West Park, Cuyahoga County, Ohio[13].

Notes for George A. Kidd: General Notes: George served as a servant in the household of George W. Chaplin in his younger years and lived at 189 Franklin Avenue in Cleveland. At the time of the 1870 census he was living in the Chaplin household at 191 Euclid Avenue. He was naturalized on September 26, 1872 (Naturalization Record, p. 324, Court of Common Pleas record, Cuyahoga County) and declared the he immigrated to the US in December 1866. He subsequently became a landscaper/grading contractor, and was so listed in the 1900 and 1910 censuses. The couple, who apparently had no surviving children, lived in Rockport Hamlet in 1900 and in Westpark Township in 1910.

4. ii. Isaac Kidd[14] was born on 20 Feb 1849 in County Wexford, Ireland[15, 16]. He married Jemima Campbell in 1883 in Cuyahoga County, Ohio. He died on 07 Dec 1912 in Cleveland, Cuyahoga County, Ohio[15].

iii. Elizabeth Kidd[8] was born on 22 Mar 1853 in Killane, County Wexford, Ireland[17]. She died on 11 Dec 1853 in Killane, County Wexford, Ireland[17].

viii. Kate Kidd[27] was born in 1863 in Ireland. She died in 1865 in Ireland.

Generation 4

4. Isaac Kidd-4 (JOSEPH-3, GEORGE-2, GEORGE-1)[14] was born on 20 Feb 1849 in County Wexford, Ireland[15, 16]. He died on 07 Dec 1912 in Cleveland, Cuyahoga County, Ohio[15].

Notes for Isaac Kidd: General Notes: According to the 1880 census, Isaac was a servant in the household of Samuel Mather, who was an industrialist behind the Cleveland Iron Mining company and who, with others, controlled the Mark Hanna Co. and Pickands Mather and Co. which, between them, dominated the ore trade on the Great Lakes. Isaac, between 1900 and 1912 was a wholesale liquor merchant on Cleveland's west side. By 1900 he lived at 105 Birch, in Cleveland. He was naturalized September 26, 1872 (Court of Common Pleas, Cuyahoga County). At the time of his death he was living at 1830 W. 50th st, Cleveland.

Jemima Campbell[28, 29] was born in Dec 1859 in Canada[30]. She died on 14 Oct 1943 in Stuart, Martin County, Florida.

Notes for Jemima Campbell: General Notes: Though her father's given name is unknown at this point (February, 2000) her father built the Campbell Block near the Central Viaduct in Cleveland. It's at the western terminus of the Detroit Superior Bridge (source: Jim A. Kidd, file in Prokasy Library).

Isaac Kidd and Jemima Campbell were married in 1883 in Cuyahoga County, Ohio. They had the following children:

8. i. Isaac Campbell Kidd[29] was born on 24 Mar 1884 in Cleveland, Cuyahoga County, Ohio[31]. He married Inez Nellie Gilmore on 29 Apr 1911 in Cuyahoga County, Ohio. He died on 07 Dec 1941 in Pearl Harbor, Honolulu, Hawaii.

9. ii. Archibald Nicholson Kidd[28] was born on 13 Oct 1885 in Cleveland, Cuyahoga County, Ohio[32]. He married Ellen Jane Sanders before 1908. He died before 20 Jun 1951 in Cleveland, Cuyahoga County, Ohio[33].

Page 3 of 32 Saturday, March 24, 2012 6:06:14 PM Descendants of GEORGE KIDD

Generation 4 (con't)

10. iii. Minnie Rebecca Kidd[34] was born on 06 Jul 1890 in Cleveland, Cuyahoga County, Ohio[35]. She married Arthur Henry Chappelka in 1917. She died in Dec 1965 in Stuart, Martin County, Florida.

11. iv. Alexander Campbell Kidd[28] was born on 14 Dec 1895 in Cleveland, Cuyahoga County, Ohio[36]. He married Charlotte Harriett Melcher between 1919-1920[37]. He died on 03 Dec 1971 in East Orange, Essex County, New Jersey[36, 38].

5. SAMUEL L. KIDD-4 (JOSEPH-3, GEORGE-2, GEORGE-1)[9] was born on 05 Jan 1855 in Ireland[18]. He died on 31 May 1930 in Geneva, Ashtabula County, Ohio[20].

Notes for SAMUEL L. KIDD: General Notes: From census data: The family lived at 48 Bolivar Road in 1889, Turney Road in 1900; on East 105th Street in 1910 and lived at 10210 Woodland Avenue in 1920. Samuel came to this country in 1864 or 1865 (there is a discrepancy in years reported in census records). The Cleveland City Directory of 1879 lists him as a coachman for J. F. Rhodes, Inc, a job he had at least through 1882. During that time he was living at 6 Whitman on the west side Cleveland. The census records state that his father was born in Ireland and his mother was born in Scotland, though marriage records make it likely that his parents were married in Killinick, Wexford, Ireland. He was a teamster in 1900. In the 1905 Cleveland rural mail directory the following is stated: "Kidd Samuel L. r.f.d. 1, Fairmount, 2;m [miles], Cleveland Heights Village, occupation poultry breeder, Irish tenant, Mrs. Mary E., Grace M., Joseph S., Christopher M., Oliver C., Alice M." He was listed as a contractor in 1910. By 1930 the couple was living on Maple Avenue, Geneva, Ohio, and they were living there at the time of his death. (Living next door to them were Loring and Minnie Tuttle. Minnie was the mother of William Prokasy who married Samuel's daughter Grace.) Though the death record for Samuel Kidd indicates that he was born January 5, 1860, this is not correct as the 1870 census record gives him an age of 15. Samuel died of a cerebral embolism. It is probable that his birth date was January 5, 1855 (the 1930 census lists him as age 76), and that date has been used (note that Ryan Kidd's file indicates that he was born in 1849, the same year as Isaac). From James A. Kidd (file in Prokasy Library): Samuel operated a livery stable and worked as a teamster from 1900-1920.

MARY ELIZABETH SHALER daughter of Jane S. Shaler was born on 13 Sep 1865 in Utica, Oneida County, New York[39]. She died on 17 Jan 1942 in Geneva, Ashtabula County, Ohio[40, 41].

Notes for MARY ELIZABETH SHALER: General Notes: Mary reports in the 1910 and 1920 US censuses that her father was born in France and that her mother was born in Connecticut. The Census lists her as the same age as Samuel, though the Cleveland Press obituary states that she was 76 at the time of her death. Samuel's age has been differently reported, and he was probably born in 1855.

Mary's background is not clear. Based on research done by James A. Kidd (file in Prokasy Library), her step-mother was Jane S. Shaler who, at the time of the 1870 census for Lowville, NY, lived in Lowville and worked as a housekeeper. Mary was then five years old, but was not living with Jane which suggests that the adoption was after 1870. According to the the records of the Trinity Parish of Lowville, NY., Mary was baptised on September 24, 1882 and was the adopted daughter of Jane S. Shaler. In the same month and year that Mary and Samuel's first child (Grace) was born, Mary received a letter from Henry Tod. It was clearly a very close and warm letter, suggesting a close relationship and may well have something to do with Mary's biological parents.

vi. Alice Mabel Kidd[28] was born on 07 Sep 1902 in Cleveland, Cuyahoga County, Ohio[48]. She died on 22 Jun 1912 in Cleveland, Cuyahoga County, Ohio[49].

16. vii. Irene K. Kidd[28] was born on 30 May 1907 in Cleveland, Cuyahoga County, Ohio. She died on 01 Jul 1990 in Youngstown, Mahoning County, Ohio.

17. viii. Earl Garnet Kidd[28] was born on 20 Sep 1910 in Cleveland, Cuyahoga County, Ohio[36]. He married Louise Henrietta Hedwig Maier on 08 May 1937 in Cleveland, Cuyahoga County, Ohio[50]. He died on 27 Jan 1974 in Eustis, Lake County, Florida[36, 51].

Dena Tabrock was born in 1859[52]. She died on 25 Dec 1885 in East Rockport, Cuyahoga County, Ohio[53].

Notes for Dena Tabrock: General Notes: Dena died of consumption at age 26.

SAMUEL L. KIDD and Dena Tabrock were married on 06 Jul 1881 in Cleveland, Cuyahoga County, Ohio[54]. They had no children.

6. Elizabeth Kidd-4 (JOSEPH-3, GEORGE-2, GEORGE-1)[9] was born before 28 Mar 1856 in Killane, County Wexford, Ireland[21]. She died on 25 Sep 1940 in Lakewood, Cuyahoga County, Ohio[23].

Notes for Elizabeth Kidd: General Notes: The 1900 census has Elizabeth born August 1864. However, the 1870 census for her father does not list such an Elizabeth, but rather one born in the 1850's. She was living with her daughter, Florence, Page 5 of 32 Saturday, March 24, 2012 6:06:14 PM Descendants of GEORGE KIDD

Generation 4 (con't) list such an Elizabeth, but rather one born in the 1850's. She was living with her daughter, Florence, at the time of the 1930 census.

George T. Porter was born in Jan 1852 in Ohio. He died before Feb 1920 in Cuyahoga County, Ohio.

Notes for George T. Porter: General Notes: Name obtained from marriage record and from Mary Kidd Porter's obituary. He apparently had died by 1920, as his wife was a widow living with her daughter and son-in-law at the time of the 1920 census. He, a salesman, and his family were living on Lake Boulevard in Cleveland, OH, in 1900.

George T. Porter and Elizabeth Kidd were married on 22 Jan 1883 in Cuyahoga County, Ohio[22]. They had the following children:

18. i. Florence Porter[55] was born in Oct 1889 in Ohio. She married Alvie Costello between 1911-1912[56].

7. Mary Ann Kidd-4 (JOSEPH-3, GEORGE-2, GEORGE-1)[9] was born on 12 Jul 1858 in Ireland[25]. She died on 21 Jan 1950 in Lakewood, Cuyahoga County, Ohio[23].

Notes for Mary Ann Kidd: General Notes: Mary Ann wrote the following letter (courtesy of Ryan and James Kidd), which was found by a Reverend Ruddell while searching the registers of Killane, Templeshambo and Templudigan. It was very useful in providing information about the family.

Letter Postmarked Cleveland Ohio, 7 August 1938, Letter Text:

Dear Sir, You will do me a great favor if you will kindly send me the date of my birth and the date when I was baptized and my sister Elizabeth and the date of her birth too. she used to go to Sunday school in you church when she was a little girl. Maile P.S. My name was Mary Anne Kidd

Her obituary: "Maile, Mary A., wife of the late Christopher R. Maile; beloved mother of Mrs. Alice M. Benes, Mrs. Frank H. Robinson, grandmother of Frank L. Robinson, Mrs. V. A. Kuhlman and Howard T. Benes, and two great-grandchildren; residence, 1372 Bunts Rd.; passed away Jan. 21." (Cleveland Press, January 23, 1950)

MRS. CHRISTOPHER MAILE, 89, RECALLS HORSEBACK TRIPS TO POST OFFICE LAKEWOOD POST -- August 16, 1947 By Margaret Manor Butler

When Mary Kidd Maile was an infant in 1859, her parents, Joseph and Mary Kidd, crossed the ocean from County Wexford, Ireland, to settle in Cleveland. They lived for a short time on Case avenue (E. 40th St.) before purchasing a farm on Riverside and Munn roads.

Although Mary was too young to remember anything about the old country, there is a bit of Ireland in her blarney, a sparkle in her very blue eyes and a youthful lilt to her head. It was a joy to talk with her, and I still feel unconvinced that she was 89 years old on July 12. Her equally vivacious daughter, Page 6 of 32 Saturday, March 24, 2012 6:06:14 PM Descendants of GEORGE KIDD

Generation 4 (con't) and I still feel unconvinced that she was 89 years old on July 12. Her equally vivacious daughter, Alice (Mrs. J.H. Benes), who also looks years younger than [page torn] chatted with us, recal-[page torn]-dents her mother ha-[page torn] years past, and remem-[page torn] own gay school days [page torn] East Rockport school [page torn]-ren road.

All of Mary's schooling [page torn] place in a little red brick [page torn] house on Lorain avenue, east of Riverside. She remembered her teachers as two sisters, Mary and Cary Brown.

Church played an important part in her life. She walked from Munn road to Detroit and Grace avenue to the little mission Episcopal Church of the Ascension, never missing a Sunday, even when the snow was knee deep. There was excitement in her neighborhood when evangelists erected a Tabernacle at Kamms Corners, and folks came from miles around to sing hymns and hear testimonies. After her marriage, her religious devotion shifted to Lakewood Methodist church where she became active in a number of circles. The Maile family contributed all the brick for the first two Methodist churches built prior to the present one on Detroit and Summit.

She recalled with a chuckle some of the lively incidents she and her seven brothers and sisters had on their farm. Only a short time ago she stood under the identical apple tree on Warren road to whose sheltering branches she had fled after an argument with one of her brothers. She remembered the long intellectual discussions her father had with Obadiah Munn, who lived across the road and for whom Munn road was named.

Most vivid of all her recollections were her trips to Johnson's Post Office on Detroit at Belle ave. As a child her daily chore was to go for the mail on her large white spirited Kentucky horse. She created quite a stir as she galloped along Riverside and down Detroit avenue, her fair skin and light brown hair framing her neat figure in tight black bodice and flowing black skirt. She seldom looked to the right or left either, intent on her errand or perhaps absorbed in a dram of galloping knights in armor. Someone always rushed out with the mail to hand to Mary Kidd, for it was well known that once atop her spirited steed she stayed there until he deposited her at her own picket fence with the extra step to climb down.

As she grew older and more sedate, the white horse pulled the carriage in which she rode on her daily trips to the Post Office. For many months Christopher Maile watched from his doorway as she rode by, and he vowed that she was the girl he intended to marry, although he had not yet been properly introduced. And true to his vow, he did marry her before she was 18.

Christopher's father, William R. Maile, one of the first trustees of the hamlet, was also the only brickmaker. His yard and kiln were near the Nickle Plate in back of the old homestead, a brick house still standing on Detroit between Brockley and Cranford. Mr. Maile also owned a lot of property, and when a short street near Riverside was opened, it was named Maile after him.

Besides their son, the William Maile's had three daughters, Nellie (Mrs. Sidney Goss), Hattie (Mrs. U.B. Hird) and Lulu (Mrs. Jay Cannon).

After his marriage, Christopher followed in his father's footsteps by establishing a brick yard of his own on the south side of Hilliard near Elmwood. Mrs. Maile told me of how they dug the clay out of the ground, moulded it into bricks, baked them in the kilns and when cool, piled them neatly in the yard. "And I will never forget one day," she added, "when I was the only one at home and there was a hurry up call for a load of bricks. Well, I was troubled for a while, but decided it had to be done, so with the help of the driver I loaded one thousand bricks on the wagon. No one was ever wearier than I that night."

The brick yard was for many years a happy memory for Lakewood youth, for in winter the pit was filled with water which froze for ideal skating. Almost as soon as school was out, gay figures dotted the ice pond and more than one romance started at Maile's.

Sadness came early to the family when six year old William was killed in a fall from the brick wagon,

Page 7 of 32 Saturday, March 24, 2012 6:06:14 PM Descendants of GEORGE KIDD

Generation 4 (con't) Sadness came early to the family when six year old William was killed in a fall from the brick wagon, where he had climbed for a ride. Besides Alice Benes who lives with her mother, Mrs. Maile has another daughter, Lulu May (Mrs. Edward Robinson), and three grandchildren, Howard Benes, June and Frank Robinson. Her nephew, Rear Admiral Isaac Kidd, was the famous hero of Pearl Harbor.

Active for years in many welfare organizations, Mrs. Maile has cut her activities to her friends and her one favorite club, the "Oh Be Joyfuls" to which she has belonged for 60 years.

Mrs. Maile lives at 1372 Bunts.

Christopher R. Maile was born on 24 Jan 1862 in Lakewood, Cuyahoga County, Ohio[57]. He died on 13 Feb 1923 in Lakewood, Cuyahoga County, Ohio[58].

Notes for Christopher R. Maile: General Notes: The couple was living at 1426 Lauderdale Avenue, Lakewood, when he died. He was a brickmaker by profession.

Generation 5

8. Isaac Campbell Kidd-5 (Isaac-4, JOSEPH-3, GEORGE-2, GEORGE-1)[29] was born on 24 Mar 1884 in Cleveland, Cuyahoga County, Ohio[31]. He died on 07 Dec 1941 in Pearl Harbor, Honolulu, Hawaii.

Notes for Isaac Campbell Kidd: General Notes: Rear Admiral in the US. Navy; Graduate of Annapolis; Flagship was the Arizona; he died when the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor December 7, 1941 and was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor.

He was appointed to the Naval Academy from Ohio in 1902 and after graduation in 1906 served on the USS Columbia and served in the 1906 Panama expedition. He then served on the USS New Jersey, which cruised around the world and on the USS North Dakota until 1911. On February 3, 1940 he reported as chief of staff as aid, Commander of battleships, battle force, and was in command of the battleship division of the Pacific fleet at the time of his death. (Source: James A. Kidd, file in Prokasy Library).

The USS Arizona was initially struck by torpedoes during the first wave of Japanese attackers, followed by bomb hits scored by high altitude bombers. A direct hit on the Arizona's boat deck between the No. 4 and No. 6 guns tore open the Arizona like a can, another went into the No. 4 turret. The resulting fires could not be fought because there was no water pressure. (As the Arizona settled on the bottom, she ruptured an underground water pipe.) She was hit by another high altitude bomb at approximately 8:10 A.M., near the No. 2 turret. It ignited the forward magazines, a gigantic explosion occurred, sealing the Page 8 of 32 Saturday, March 24, 2012 6:06:14 PM Descendants of GEORGE KIDD

Generation 5 (con't) explosion occurred, sealing the doom of over 1,000 crewmen. The force of the explosion blew Commander Cassin Young, Captain of the repair ship Vestal (AR-4) off the ship and into the harbor. He swam back to his ship. The Arizona took nine minutes to sink.

The Arizona's Captain, Franklin Van Valkenburg, as well as Rear Admiral Isaac Kidd, Commander of Battleship Divison One were among the 1,177 killed.

Inez Nellie Gilmore[28] was born on 08 Nov 1887[36]. She died in May 1978 in Norfolk, Norfolk County, Virginia[36].

Isaac Campbell Kidd and Inez Nellie Gilmore were married on 29 Apr 1911 in Cuyahoga County, Ohio. They had the following children:

Kidd, was killed on board his flagship, the battleship ARIZONA, during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. Admiral Kidd, senior, was posthumously awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor. Following his commissioning, Ensign Kidd remained at the Academy until May 1942 as Company Officer for Reserve Officers, Assistant Wrestling Coach, Assistant Football Coach, and Executive Officer of the V-5 Physical Instructors Classes.

In May 1952, he assumed command of the destroyer-minesweeper ELLYSON. While deployed in ELLYSON to the Mediterranean, he commanded all of the U.S. mine forces in the Sixth Fleet.
