1976-This was a very happy moment for young John Nebus (c) of South Amboy, who is congratulated by St. Mary’s Pastor Rev. James McConnell (l) and John Durnye, owner of the South Amboy Roller Skating Arena, for getting the top-value pledges in a Skate-A-Thon, which was conducted by Mr. Durnye for the church building fund. Durnye donated prizes for those St. Mary’s students who had the largest pledges towards the renovation of the church. The total raised was $1,400, and Nebus was #1 in pledges and had his choice of prizes, and he selected the 10-speed bike pictured here. Barbara Wojtaszek was second highest and won a transistor radio, while Joseph Szraga was third in pledges and received roller skating speed wheels. Under existing law, a CATV subscriber is to notify the CATV company, the Office of Cable Television, or other designated complaint officer of service outage to receive a credit rebate. “As of right now, cable TV subscribers may call their company and request a rebate or credit for the time they have gone without service due to an outage,” said Coughlin (D- Middlesex). “Many residents take the time to inquire about a rebate; however, others may not have the time or even know they can call to receive a credit to their account. “With this bill, we ensure residents get the credit or rebate due to them -- in the event an outage interrupts their service for a substantial period of time – without any undue stress.” The bill (A-3260) amends existing law to provide that a cable television company is to issue, within 30 days of a subscriber’s CATV service outage, a credit or rebate or any other form of compensation deemed appropriate by the cable company for a subscriber’s cable television service outage, regardless of whether the subscriber notifies the CATV company, the Office of Cable television or notifies the CATV company, the Office of Cable Television, or other designated complaint officer of the service outage. The bill was approved by the Assembly Telecommunications and Utilities Committee. It now awaits further consideration by the Assembly Speaker. Tulip, 2 lip By Rev. Exercise Can Lower The Rate Of Depression in the Elderly Maintaining a regular exercise program can help lower the risk of depression in the elderly. Men and women who reduce their level of physical activity over an eight year period were more likely to suffer from depression than individuals who maintain or increase their level of activity the research noted. According to the authors, “active physical exercise is associated with better mental health”. In a study published in Preventive Medicine, Paine Lampenen and colleagues with the University of Finland, compared exercise and depression in 663 people aged 65 years and older. Researchers interviewed individuals 65 years and older. They were initially interviewed and then again eight years later. Exercise was divided into three types: necessary chores only, regular walking, and strenuous exercise. Results show that individuals tended to decrease their level of physical activity as they aged. This trend appeared to increase the likelihood of becoming depressed regardless of socioeconomic factors or health status. Only 30% of those who engaged in strenuous physical activity from the beginning kept up their level. These people reported fewer depressive symptoms at both ends of the study. On the other hand, individuals who become less active over time were more depressed. The old Chiropractic adage, states “if you don’t use it you lose it” as always an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Vincent Lee is standing tall and proud as he salutes the colors that were presented by American Legion Post #211 for a flag presentation held on May 20th at the Arleth Elementary School in Sayreville. The school students were treated to an explanation about America’s flag, what it stands for, and represents to our country, and they in turn had some ideas about what the flag means to them. To hear them read their comments was very special and original. It sounded and looks like America’s future will be in good hands. Great job students and Post 211 Honor Guard!
