CHRIST CHURCH MADISON DAILY DEVOTIONAL SEPTEMBER-DECEMBER Concerning this Devotional Tool

This particular liturgy for Daily Devotions is adapted from the Angli- can Church of North America’s 2019 Book of Common Prayer (BCP), which is based on ancient texts and Scriptures. Christ Church Madison has formatted the liturgy so that it may be used by individuals, couples, or households. We have greatly condensed it to be as simple as possible, but if you’d like to use the full Daily Office liturgy from the BCP, you can order one, or find a free online PDF atbcp2019.anglicanchurch.net. May this guide to Daily Devotions be helpful in creating rhythms of Scripture reading and prayer in your daily life, and therefore grow your knowledge and love of Jesus Christ.

A few notes to keep in mind: • What do the asterisks mean? Lines of prayer and verses of Scrip- ture are sometimes split in half by an asterisk. When praying with a group, this is where lines may be split and read alternately. • Daily Office Lectionary. If followed year round, this reading plan from the BCP will lead readers through most of the the Old Tes- tament once and most of the the New Testament twice. We will update this quarterly. The lectionary is not to be seen as an assignment, but as a resource. You could choose to read one passage a day, or you could read a different reading at each meal, or you could read them all at once. Also, feel free to replace this with your own reading plan. • 60-Day Psalter. For any day, the psalms appointed may be reduced in number according to your circumstance. • Why the Apocrypha? You’ll find additional books included in the Lectionary readings. These are Jewish books written during the time between the Old and New Testaments. In the Anglican tradition, we do not hold these texts to be Scripture; therefore, they cannot be used to establish doctrine. However, the 39 Articles state they can be used for spiritual edification. If you don’t have access to the Apocrypha feel free to skip or replace these readings. • What is a Collect? A collect is a simple prayer with a particular struc- ture that summarizes or “collects” the previous prayers into one. • The symbol † designates an optional abbreviation of the lesson. You may read just the listed verses rather than the entire chapter. How to Pray with Scripture

Sometimes it can be hard to read the Bible by yourself. It’s easy to get distracted, or not understand a passage at first glance, but the Church is here to help. Lectio Divina is a time-tested way of studying a passage of Scripture that dates all the way back to the 6th century. Translated as “divine reading”, this method involves inviting the Holy Spirit to bring different aspects of a passage into focus as we read it sever- al times. Like the Daily Office Lectionary,Lectio Divina is a helpful resource to be used insofar as it helps you engage with Scripture. You may decide to only use it for one reading, or a portion of one reading, or once a week, or none at all. Whatever the case, we pray it helps you delight in the Holy Scripture.

Using Lectio Divina

QUIET/SILENCIO: Sit quietly to calm distractions (1-3 minutes).

READ/LECTIO: Read the passage through out loud, simply listen- ing to the words of scripture. Then, pause for 1-3 minutes.

REFLECT/MEDITATIO: Read the passage through a second time, and spend 1-3 minutes reflecting on the question: What in the pas- sage touches my life today? In your journal, write down a portion of the passage that stands out most vividly.

RESPOND/ORATIO: Read the passage a third time, and reflect on the question: What is God inviting me to receive or do in response to the Scripture? (1-3 minutes)

LISTEN/CONTEMPLATIO: After the fourth and final reading, ask nothing: simply rest in the presence of the Lord and write down the thoughts and insights that come to mind. Listen for any personal words the Lord is saying.

A Liturgy for Daily Devotions

OPENING PRAYER Psalm 51

Open my lips, O Lord, * and my mouth shall proclaim your praise. Create in me a clean heart, O God, * and renew a right spirit within me. Cast me not away from your presence * and take not your holy Spirit from me. Give me the joy of your saving help again * and sustain me with your bountiful Spirit. Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: * as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

DAILY OFFICE LECTIONARY See the chart on the next few pages.

Reader: The Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God.

A period of silence may follow. A hymn may be sung; the Apostles Creed may be said. Prayers may be offered for ourselves and others.

THE LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. THE COLLECT One of the following may be used.

A Collect for the Acceptance of Prayer Heavenly Father, you have promised to hear what we ask in the Name of your Son: Accept and fulfill our petitions, we pray, not as we ask in our ignorance, nor as we deserve in our sinfulness, but as you know and love us in your Son Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

A Collect for Quiet Confidence O God of peace, who has taught us that in returning and rest we shall be saved, in quietness and in confidence shall be our strength: By the might of your Spirit lift us, we pray you, to your presence, where we may be still and know that you are God; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

A Collect for Seeking God Teach me to seek you, and as I seek you, show yourself to me; for I can- not seek you unless you show me how, and I will never find you unless you show yourself to me. Let me seek you by desiring you, and desire you by seeking you; let me find you by loving you, and love you in finding you. Amen.

A Collect for Mission Lord Jesus Christ, you stretched out your arms of love on the hard wood of the cross that everyone might come within the reach of your saving embrace: So clothe us in your Spirit that we, reaching forth our hands in love, may bring those who do not know you to the knowledge and love of you; for the honor of your Name. Amen.

A Collect for Guidance Heavenly Father, in you we live and move and have our being: We humbly pray you so to guide and govern us by your Holy Spirit, that in all the cares and occupations of our life we may not forget you, but may remember that we are ever walking in your sight; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen 60 Day Psalter
