Charles Balic Charles Balic Charles Balic (Croatian: Karlo Balić; 9 December 1899 - 15 April 1977) was a Croatian Franciscan Mariologist. Friar Charles Balić was a famous Theologian, specializing in the figure and works of John Duns Scotus, and Rector of the Pontifical University Antonianum of Rome. He was the founder of the Pontifical Academy of Mary[1] and President of the International Scotistic Commission. He was the principal redactor in the editing of the chapter VIII of the Lumen gentium with “De Beata” redaction.[2] He has been important for the ecumenical mariology.[3] Balic is considered as one of the top representative of the "Marian movement" in the 20th century: his appointment was conclusive for the proclamation of the dogma of the assumption.[4] 1 Biography Mariological Congress Successively, he was sent to Louvain from where he re- ceived a Doctorate for a thesis on Franciscan Mariology of the 13th and 14th centuries. Returning to Croatia, he served as Lecturer in his Province until 1933, when he was sent to Rome to begin teaching in the new Pontifical Athenaeum Antonianum, where he gave his Inaugural Class, which was to become the beginning of his career. He later became the Rector Magnificus and had the Our Lady of the Assumption hall built. Antonio Piolanti recalls Balić as “a titan of a man, built almost on an abyss of contrasts - a great soul of unlim- ited horizons and immense desires. A type of coinci- dentia oppositorum was easily detected in the vigorous spiritual physiognomy of this worthy son of strong and gentle Croatia: the heart of a child and Hieronymic im- petus, the tenderness of a mother and authoritativeness of a leader, acute and penetrating intelligence, resolute and fiery determination, warm generosity and Dantesque indignation”.[5] 2 President of International Scotis- tic Commission Carlo Balic Karlo Balić was born in the village of Katuni near He was entrusted with the International Scotistic Com- Šestanovac, Croatia. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Gregory Peter XV Cardinal Agagianian is perhaps one of the best known of the non-American Cardinals. He has become familiar to Amer ican Catholic and non-Catholic readers because of the publicity given to his appointment to succeed Cardinal Stritch as Pro-prefect of the Sacred Congregation of the Faith in June, 1958. At this time and during the period following the death of the late Pius XII, he was considered by many observers as one of the most likely "candidates" for the Papacy. His two trips to the United States in 1954 and in May of this past year have served to bring him to the attention of the American public. Born in the Russian Caucasus sixty-five years ago, Cardinal Agagianian grew up in what is now Russian Georgia.

Jelly: Introduction to Chapter 8 THE THEOLOGICAL CONTEXT OF AND INTRODUCTION TO CHAPTER 8 OF Lumen Gentium Although this paper presents both history and theology, it is intended to be primarily theological. Its principal purpose is to provide a theological interpretation of the main events that led to the text of chapter 8 of Lumen Gentium (LG), the Dogmatic Constitution on the Church, which was issued November 21, 1964, as well as a commentary upon the introduction or preface to that chapter on Mary (LG 52-54). 1 The teaching of Vatican Council II on marian doctrine and devotion is more extensive than what is contained in chapter 8 of LG since there are many references to Mary in other conciliar documents.2 Our chief con cern, however, is to concentrate upon the text of the marian schema in the broader context of the real life situations that his torically influenced its composition as a part of the schema on the Church." 1 The translation of the text of chapter 8 of LG used in this paper is that which appears in this volume of Marian Studies and was done by F.

Fehlner: Franciscan School and the Coredemption THE FRANCISCAN MAmoLOGICAL ScHOOL AND THE COREDEMPTIVE MOVEMENT Fr. Peter Fehlner, EL * Many years ago, during a casual conversation, Fr. Juniper Carol, founder of the Mariological Society of America, men tioned to me the three crusades, during the half century between 1927 and 1977, of Fr. Charles Balle, the indefatigable promoter of Mary Immaculate and of the subtle Marian Doctor, Bl.John Duns Scotus. These crusades were 1) the anti-debitist, linked to the promotion of the Immaculate Conception in the speculative realm, 2) the coredemptive, and 3) the assumptionist.1 The first, although now attracting little attention from the ologians, surely deserves more, since its objective is to counter tendencies, still very much alive in the Church and among var ious groups of theologians, to minimize the essential difference between preservative and liberative redemption, and so the crucial practical import of the dogma.

  • FR. GIUSEPPE QUADRIO Theology Teacher and Master of Life
FR. GIUSEPPE QUADRIO Theology Teacher and Master of Life Translation by John Rasor of Remo Bracchi (ed.), Don Giuseppe Quadrio: Docente di Teologia e Maestro di Vita (Rome, LAS 1989), pp. 9-22. These are the proceedings of a 1989 symposium on Fr. Quadrio at the Salesian Pontifical University in Rome. Presentation Fr. Giuseppe Quadrio spent the last fourteen years of his brief and intensive life as a teacher of dogmatic theology in the Theology Department of what was then the Salesian Pontifical Athenaeum of Turin (now Salesian Pontifical University in Rome). He was also chairman of the Department (from 1954 to 1959), up to the time his illness forced his retirement. Teaching theology was the main job given him, and he consecrated his best energies to that, with great seriousness and dedication, bringing to fruition what he had matured in the years of preparation for this task. But more than an assignment or a duty, he always saw a privileged and unique mission. He pushed himself to make an authentic existential synthesis of study, teaching and life; of his study and his life; of theological investigation and contemporary reality; of its problems and challenges. For the students, this was – as numerous testimonies demonstrate – the most important and eloquent lesson of Fr. Quadrio: doing theology with gaze turned with constant attention to those hearing the doctrine, to the students in front of him as well as those far off, but no less important, men of today with their conditionings and culture. He succeeded above all in “doing theology” in the crucible of his own life.

„Szkotyzm należy do znaczących fenomenów w Kościele i kulturze także XX wieku. Obfitość studiów szczegółowych oraz inicjatyw edytorskich poświęconych Gigantowi z Duns wybitnie utrudnia życie adeptom szkotyzmu. Kośla dokonał dzieła olbrzymiego i niesłychanie pożytecznego.

JUNIPER B. CAROL, O.F.M. (1911-1990) Name: Kozack, Jessica Catherine University of Dayton Advisor: Dr. William L. Portier This study analyzes the work of the American Mariologist Fr. Juniper B. Carol O.F.M. (1911-1990) in light of his historical and theological context. Carol’s work focused primarily on the Coredemption, which he studied before Vatican II, and the primacy of Christ, which he studied after the Council. Carol’s work significantly influenced international Mariology and provides an example of how one Mariologist responded to the theological developments that occurred after Vatican II. Carol’s work demonstrates the influence of his Franciscan heritage, in both his pre- Conciliar discussion of Mary’s mediation and Coredemption and his post-Conciliar discussion of the debitum peccati, the preservative redemption, and the predestination and primacy of Christ.
