The Scottish Highlanders of old were fearsome warriors. Their primary enemies, the English, knew of the tactics that the Scots used in battle and were intimidated. The most feared battlefield attack tactic of the Highlanders – “the Highland Charge” – TOYOTA was the doom of many an Englishman. SCION 210 N. JEFFERSON ST. The charge required a high degree of commitment from the Scots since the men were 272-3244 rushing at full speed into the English defensive line. Speed was essential to the 1-888-561-8030 charge, so the Highlanders preferred to employ the charge downhill and over firm ground. They ran forward in clusters of a dozen (often blood relatives) which formed CULLENS a larger wedge-shaped pattern. Upon reaching striking distance, the Highlander would attempt to block the opponent’s sword or bayonet point with a shield while SUPPLY & lunging to deliver a savage blow with his own sword. Each Englishman was faced ENGINE SERVICE head-on with a Scot wielding a large shield and a huge upraised sword. The charge was nearly unstoppable.

The only way to stop the Highland Charge was to put personal safety aside and 910 E. Jackson St. protect the man next to you. Each Englishman would pivot slightly to his right and Dublin • 272-4353 thrust his bayonet at the Scot attacking the man next to him. With the Scotsman’s arm upraised, he was vulnerable from that position. The difficulty was to trust the man to your left with your life while you were tending to the man to your right. There can be no “every man for himself” on this battlefield.

We are in the midst of the greatest battle ever. Our enemy is fierce and clever. As the souls of the lost hang in the balance, our Commander calls for us to put aside our own FARM & GARDEN passions and care for our fellow soldiers of the cross. Wars are won this way just as FARM & GARDEN kingdoms are built. God calls us to unity. Satan trembles at a unified Christian army. 803 E. Continued from 1a birthday. When this happened it changed that day and really the rest of our lives. “As a country, I think we’re more diligent,” he added. “We re- alize that the enemies off of our shores can reach us. We have to be a world player not an island onto ourselves. … It was a time where we forgot about our politi- cal differences, religious differ- ences and sports rivalries. Foot- ball was not No. 1 back then. Our country and families were.” Clements and his twin sister Merle Waldrep, were born on the same day. He said both were turning 55. Clements was working in his office when he heard about the attacks. He didn’t have a televi- sion but was told about what had happened in New York. “I went to the internet to try to get on some news agency site but the internet had crashed,” Clements said. “My wife kept me informed at home by watching TV.” Clements didn’t see anything about the terrorist attacks until he went home at noon. Clements and his son-in-law formed Clements and Keen in- surance, opening in October of 2001. Clements remembers the way people in the community and the country came together after 9-11. “It was a time of great patrio- tism,” Clements said. “It was sig- nificant to me that our church at- tendance across the nation im- proved immediately.Of course six months to 12 months later, things went back to normal. But (9-11) did get the attention of all of us and created that new sense of patriotism. It would be good on this 10th anniversary, if we could renew that patriotism.” Clements, who was elected to the Laurens County Board of Ed- ucation in 2003, said people should celebrate the fact that there hasn’t been another attack since that day. He credits the policies put into place by Presi- dent George W. Bush and that were carried on by President Barack Obama as a reason why other attacks haven’t happened. “We hope it will continue,” Clements said. This Sunday, Clements and his sister will celebrate their 65th birthday. They’ve celebrated it every year since that tragic day 10 years ago. “We’re going to celebrate it,” he said. “But the events of that day will be in our minds I’m sure.” Saturday, September 10, 2011 The Courier Herald Section B
