Reviewed by Juan Francisco Salazar — University of Western Sydney John Pilger has made over 50 films since his 1970 documentary debut “The Quiet Mutiny” where he reported the disillusion of American troops from the front line in Vietnam. Since then, he has reported on some of the most daring conflicts of our time including the aftermath of Pol Pot’s regime in “Cambodia Year Zero: the Silent Death of Cambodia”; his work in “East Timor and Palestine”; and his Australian Bicentenary trilogy where he exposed the hidden realities of Aboriginal Australia: “The Secret Country” (1983), “The Last Dream” (1988) and “Welcome to Australia” (1999). Pilger has received several prestigious journalism awards as well as television documentary awards such as the 2004 Royal Television Society Best Documentary award for his film on the story of the expulsion of the Chagos Islanders in “Stealing a Nation”, and the 2008 Best Documentary prize at the One World Awards for his film “The War On Democracy”. John Pilger’s leitmotif can be summarized in his own words: “It is not enough for journalists to see themselves as mere messengers without understanding the hidden agendas of the message and myths that surround it.” Throughout his work spanning four decades, it is clear that for him there is more to the message than just the medium. And this is certainly the case in his latest film, “The War You Don’t Se”. As with many – if not most – of his oeuvre, Pilger’s films ought to be compulsory viewing among high school and university students.

Kramsch Senior Lecturer Department of Human Geography Maastricht, the Netherlands, March 2009 Abstract In this Master thesis Venezuela’s internal and external policy under President Hugo Chávez has been analysed to determine to what extent it is are explained by respectively the Marxist theories of state, and critical geopolitics. The internal policy has been assessed by measuring the degree of state transformation with the help of eight indicators selected from Marxist theories of state, such as the work of Bob Jessop. The study of the external policy has been twofold, with practical geopolitics, focusing on the government’s own policy, and discourse analysis, examining President Chávez’ discourse, serving as the theoretical background. In the final chapter it has been argued that in Venezuela has is a very limited degree of state transformation or institutional and structural reforms, and that despite some promising and positive developments that set out Venezuela in the region, society and the state and its bureaucracies suffer from corruption, financial waste, inefficiency, extreme social and political polarisation, a certain degree of conflict of interests and a lack of institutionalisation of new laws and regulations. The degree of organising of the chavistas is still limited and suffers from several flaws, but elections have given the government a strong mandate for change.

They occupied 97 schools in Bogotá alone. 2,000 teachers set out on foot from the extremities of Colombia, gathering support on their way to the capital city where they led a monster 200,000 strong demonstration on 30 May. Their mass support has forced the government to negotiate with teachersʼ union FECODE. The teachers want a guarantee that the passing of a law to change how spending is transferred to the regions will not be used to camou- fl age cuts. Higher education is in even deeper turmoil. The economic viability of public universities is threatened by a new law that will make each institu- tion liable for its pension liabilities, rather than drawing pensions from a central fund. This World Bank approved ʻdecentralisationʼ policy is a central plank of Uribe governmentʼs misnamed National Development Plan, and the cuts also threaten water supplies and health services.
