Judith Hermann som er født i 1970, i tidligere Vest-Berlin, har mastergrad i tysk og filosofi. Hun ble akseptert ved Berliner Journalistenschule , og dro under utdannelsen til New York hvor hun skrev for den tyskspråklige avisa Aufbau. I USA begynte hennes arbeid med de første skjønnlitterære tekstene. Tilbake i Berlin jobbet hun en kort stund som free-lance journalist før hun mottok Alfred- Döblin -stipendet fra Akademie der Künste i 1997. I 1998 debuterte Hermann med novellesamlingen Sommerhaus, später som består av ni korte tekster. Samlingen høstet strålende kritikker og flere litterære priser, deriblant den prestisjetunge Kleist-prisen. Den ble oversatt til 17 språk og fikk enorm mediedekning i Tyskland. -

International Multidisciplinary Research Journal - ISSN 2424-7073 Gender & Women’s Studies - Volume 1, Issue No.1 (July 2019): Pages 51-55 ©ICRD Publication Seeing the Body in Karen Duve’s This Is Not a Love Song Sayaka Oki Doshisha University, Kyoto, Japan Abstract Karen Duve’s novel This Is Not a Love Song is named after a song by Public Image Ltd whose lead singer was Johnny Rotten. It develops intertextual elements related to canonical literature as well as popular culture. The final scene in the novel where Anne and Peter stare at each other in Peter’s home is based on a scene from Goethe’s The Sorrows of Young Werther (1774). Duve’s novel describes this literary scene in connection with the 1996 UEFA European Football Championship in which the English footballer Gareth Southgate famously missed a penalty1. This is an example of the way in which the novel is constructed of a mosaic of high and low cultural citations2. The aim of this literary structure is to overcome a gendered dichotomy. This literary approach shows the influence of Leslie A. Fiedler’s essay Cross the Border—Close the Gap3 (1972), which had a big impact on contemporary literature of the 21st century in Germany. The present study analyzes Karen Duve’s novel, focusing on the aspect of considering gender gaps from post-feminist critical discussions of “bodies and seeing.” It should be asked how the image of Anne’s body is created and in which ways female subjectivity is established in the novel. In this context, it should be especially pointed out that Duve’s novel describes this condition from a humorous literary perspective, in contrast to Goethe’s Werther that has a tragic ending. -

Echoes and Oscillations: Poetics, Public Intellectualism, and Contemporary Literature in the Work of Juli Zeh by Lars Richter A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Germanic Languages, Literatures and Linguistics Department of Modern Languages and Cultural Studies University of Alberta © Lars Richter, 2016 Abstract Since the publication of her debut novel in 2001, German author Juli Zeh has established herself as an important figure within the landscape of contemporary German-language literature. Echoes and Oscillations: Poetics, Public Intellectualism, and Contemporary Literature in the Work of Juli Zeh examines the work of Juli Zeh with respect to how her poetological positions, her work as a public intellectual and the incorporation of modes of realistic writing in her narratives result in an interplay between diegetic and non-diegetic realities that, in turn, have an impact on the question of what role literature can play in the present cultural landscape of Germany and beyond. Through the analysis of Zeh’s poetological writings and her work as public intellectual, Echoes and Oscillations defines Zeh as a politically committed author who revives the long- standing model of author as public intellectual and transports it into the twenty-first century. The analysis of selected novels with respect to echoes of traditions of realistic writing from German literary history leads to a re-conceptualization of the term ‘contemporary German-language literature.’ Exemplified through Zeh’s texts, the dissertation proposes a model that regards contemporary literature as being embedded in, being mindful of, and commenting on their time via the tight interconnection between sociopolitical discourses and her fictional and nonfictional work.
