It’s life giving, yet dangerous. The combination of 246 sunny days per year, our love of the outdoors and the large percentage of fair skinned people here in Australia means we still have one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world. We get asked a lot of questions about sunscreen here at Hello Charlie. Understandable, really, as we’re pretty big around here on getting rid of toxic chemicals in our skincare. You’ll often hear me saying that one of the ways to cut down on unnecessary chemicals in your skincare is to simply cut down on the amount of skincare products that you use. However, sunscreen isn’t one of these. You can get away without using moisturiser, or shampoo, but if you live in Australia, you simply can’t get away without using sunscreen. In the years since I’ve been doing this sunscreen cheat sheet, not a lot of new sunscreens with natural ingredients have come on the market. This is partly because it’s pretty tricky to release a new sunscreen in Australia, thanks to the very strict standards set by the Therapeutic Goods Administration, which regulates sunscreens here. Before you start browsing the sunscreens, there’s a couple of things you need to know: 1.TGA regulations don’t require manufacturers to list ingredients on products with a therapeutic purpose (as sunscreens prevent cancer, they fall into this category). 2.The TGA regulates sunscreens, but not cosmetics with sunscreen ingredients. So if you’re looking for a product that’s not listed here, it may be because the manufacturer hasn’t listed the ingredients, which makes it very hard to review. Or it may be that the product isn’t a sunscreen at all, but is a cosmetic with sunscreen ingredients. (There’s more info about that here). I’ll be releasing a ‘cosmetics with SPF’ cheat sheet soon, but in the meantime, have a look at the ingredients you should avoid in sunscreens. And then read on to find out which natural sunscreens I recommend, and which ones I don’t! www.hellocharlie.com.au 4 Sunscreen ingredients are divided into active and inactive ingredients. Active ingredients are the ones that protect you from the sun. Inactive ingredients are things like moisturisers, fragrances and preservatives. I’ve got a whole article on the blog about the ingredients that you should look out for in sunscreens, but here’s a quick list: Active ingredients to avoid: Oxybenzone Octinoxate Homosalate Octisalate Octocrylene Benzophenone-4 Benzophenone-8 Menthyl anthranilate PABA Padimate O Trolamine salicylate Inactive ingredients to avoid: Phthalates Parabens PEGs Fragrances Synthetic colours Problematic preservatives, including Methylisothiazolinone Retinyl palmitate (Vitamin A palmitate) www.hellocharlie.com.au 5 Out of the 25 sunscreens that I’ve reviewed, here’s the ones that I actually recommend. EWG Skin Deep Rating: not listed Cost: 177ml for $44.00 Comments: There are a couple of ingredients I’m not keen on here. Phenoxyethanol is an irritant, and a potential neurotoxin, so I prefer to avoid it. There’s also dimethicone in this. It doesn’t score high in EWG, but I know that many of you prefer to avoid silicones, so I’m giving you the heads up. Otherwise, this would score low in EWG. www.hellocharlie.com.au 7 Arbonne Liquid Sunshine Mineral Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 30 For Face Ingredients: Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Extract, C12- 15 Alkyl Benzoate, Camellia Sinensis Leaf Extract, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Cetyl Dimethicone, Chlorphenesin, Citric Acid, Dicaprylyl Carbonate, Glycerin, Jojoba Esters, Leontopodium Alpinum Extract, Methicone, Myristic Acid, Palmitic Acid, Phenoxyethanol, Polyglyceryl-2 Dipolyhydroxystearate, Polyglyceryl-4 Isostearate, Polyhydroxystearic Acid, Potassium Sorbate, Silica, Sodium Benzoate, Sodium Chloride, Squalane, Stearic Acid, Tocopheryl Acetate, Triethoxycaprylylsilane, Vitis Vinifera (Grape) Seed Extract, Water. EWG Skin Deep Rating: not listed Cost: 52g for $52.00 Comments: Similar to the baby sunscreen, there’s phenoxyethanol and methicone in this. It wouldn’t score high in EWG, but again, it’s a heads up for anyone who wants to avoid these. www.hellocharlie.com.au 8 Eco Logical Face Sunscreen SPF 30+ Ingredients: Active Ingredients: Zinc Oxide 20%. Inactive ingredients: Purified Water (Aqua), Isoamyl Laurate, Capric/Caprylic Triglyceride, Sorbitan Stearate, Sucrose Cocoate, Caprylyl Glycol, Cetearyl Alcohol, Cetearyl Glucoside, Hydroxypropyl Starch Phosphate, Glyceryl Isostearate, Polyhydroxystearic Acid, Xanthan Gum, Cucumis Sativus (Cucumber) Seed Extract*, Rosa Canina (Rosehips) Seed Oil*, Camellia Sinensis (Green Tea) Extract*. *Certified Organic EWG Skin Deep Rating: not listed Cost: 65g for $19.95 Comments: More good ingredients, and great sun protection. The face version has a somewhat lighter formula than the body version, and it doesn’t irritate sensitive facial skin. It’s too thick to wear under makeup, but that’s not what it’s designed for. Great for sensitive skin if you’re outdoors all day. www.hellocharlie.com.au 9 ECO Logical Body Sunscreen SPF 30+ Ingredients: Active ingredients: Zinc Oxide 22%. Inactive ingredients: Capric/Caprylic Triglyceride, Vitis Vinifera (Grape) Seed Oil, Silicon Dioxide, Cera Alba (Beeswax), Butyrospermum Parkii Seed (Shea) Butter, Euphorbia Antisyphilitica (Candelilla) Wax, Glyceryl Isostearate, Polyhydroxystearic Acid, Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba), Cucumis Sativus (Cucumber) Seed Extract, Rosa Canina (Rosehips) Seed Oil, Camellia Sinensis (Green Tea) Extract. EWG Skin Deep Rating: not listed Cost: 100g for $19.95 Comments: As with the baby sunscreen, these are great ingredients (although slightly different to the baby one), and a fabulous sunscreen. I use and recommend this. www.hellocharlie.com.au 10 ECO Logical Baby Sunscreen SPF 30+ Ingredients: Active ingredients: Zinc Oxide 22%.
