www.hellocharlie.com.au 3 Introduction

Sunshine. It’s life giving, yet dangerous. The combination of 246 sunny days per year, our love of the outdoors and the large percentage of fair skinned people here in Australia means we still have one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world.

We get asked a lot of questions about sunscreen here at Hello Charlie. Understandable, really, as we’re pretty big around here on getting rid of toxic chemicals in our skincare. You’ll often hear me saying that one of the ways to cut down on unnecessary chemicals in your skincare is to simply cut down on the amount of skincare products that you use. However, sunscreen isn’t one of these. You can get away without using moisturiser, or shampoo, but if you live in Australia, you simply can’t get away without using sunscreen.

In the years since I’ve been doing this sunscreen cheat sheet, not a lot of new sunscreens with natural ingredients have come on the market. This is partly because it’s pretty tricky to release a new sunscreen in Australia, thanks to the very strict standards set by the Therapeutic Goods Administration, which regulates sunscreens here.

Before you start browsing the sunscreens, there’s a couple of things you need to know:

1.TGA regulations ’t require manufacturers to list ingredients on products with a therapeutic purpose (as sunscreens prevent cancer, they fall into this category).

2.The TGA regulates sunscreens, but not cosmetics with sunscreen ingredients.

So if you’re looking for a product that’s not listed here, it may be because the manufacturer hasn’t listed the ingredients, which makes it very hard to review. Or it may be that the product isn’t a sunscreen at all, but is a cosmetic with sunscreen ingredients. (There’s more info about that here).

I’ll be releasing a ‘cosmetics with SPF’ cheat sheet soon, but in the meantime, have a look at the ingredients you should avoid in sunscreens. And then read on to find out which natural sunscreens I recommend, and which ones I don’t!

www.hellocharlie.com.au 4 Sunscreen ingredients are divided into active and inactive ingredients. Active ingredients are the ones that protect you from the sun. Inactive ingredients are things like moisturisers, fragrances and preservatives.

I’ve got a whole article on the blog about the ingredients that you should look out for in sunscreens, but here’s a quick list:

Active ingredients to avoid: Oxybenzone Octinoxate Homosalate Octisalate Octocrylene Benzophenone-4 Benzophenone-8 Menthyl anthranilate PABA Padimate O Trolamine salicylate

Inactive ingredients to avoid: Phthalates Parabens PEGs Fragrances Synthetic colours Problematic preservatives, including Methylisothiazolinone Retinyl palmitate (Vitamin A palmitate)

www.hellocharlie.com.au 5 Out of the 25 sunscreens that I’ve reviewed, here’s the ones that I actually recommend. I’ve listed them in alphabetical order for you:

www.hellocharlie.com.au 6 ABC Arbonne Baby Care Broad Spectrum Sunscreen SPF 30

Ingredients: C12-15 Alkyl Benzoate, Calendula Officinalis Flower Extract, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Cetyl Alcohol, Cetyl Dimethicone, Chamomilla Recutita (Matricaria) Flower Extract, Chlorphenesin, Coco- Caprylate, Copernicia Cerifera (Carnauba) Wax, Dicaprylyl Carbonate, Euphorbia Cerifera (Candelilla) Wax, Glycerin, Magnesium Sulfate, Phenoxyethanol, Polyglyceryl-2 Dipolyhydroxystearate, Polyglyceryl-4 Isostearate, Silica Dimethyl Silylate, Sodium Chloride, Stearic Acid, Tapioca Starch, Tocopheryl Acetate, Triethoxycaprylylsilane, Water.

EWG Skin Deep Rating: not listed

Cost: 177ml for $44.00

Comments: There are a couple of ingredients I’m not keen on here. Phenoxyethanol is an irritant, and a potential neurotoxin, so I prefer to avoid it. There’s also dimethicone in this. It doesn’t score high in EWG, but I know that many of you prefer to avoid silicones, so I’m giving you the heads up. Otherwise, this would score low in EWG.

www.hellocharlie.com.au 7 Arbonne Liquid Sunshine Mineral Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 30 For Face

Ingredients: Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Extract, C12- 15 Alkyl Benzoate, Camellia Sinensis Leaf Extract, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Cetyl Dimethicone, Chlorphenesin, Citric Acid, Dicaprylyl Carbonate, Glycerin, Jojoba Esters, Leontopodium Alpinum Extract, Methicone, Myristic Acid, Palmitic Acid, Phenoxyethanol, Polyglyceryl-2 Dipolyhydroxystearate, Polyglyceryl-4 Isostearate, Polyhydroxystearic Acid, Potassium Sorbate, Silica, Sodium Benzoate, Sodium Chloride, Squalane, Stearic Acid, Tocopheryl Acetate, Triethoxycaprylylsilane, Vitis Vinifera (Grape) Seed Extract, Water.

EWG Skin Deep Rating: not listed

Cost: 52g for $52.00

Comments: Similar to the baby sunscreen, there’s phenoxyethanol and methicone in this. It wouldn’t score high in EWG, but again, it’s a heads up for anyone who wants to avoid these.

www.hellocharlie.com.au 8 Eco Logical Face Sunscreen SPF 30+

Ingredients: Active Ingredients: Zinc Oxide 20%. Inactive ingredients: Purified Water (Aqua), Isoamyl Laurate, Capric/Caprylic Triglyceride, Sorbitan Stearate, Sucrose Cocoate, Caprylyl Glycol, Cetearyl Alcohol, Cetearyl Glucoside, Hydroxypropyl Starch Phosphate, Glyceryl Isostearate, Polyhydroxystearic Acid, Xanthan Gum, Cucumis Sativus (Cucumber) Seed Extract*, Rosa Canina (Rosehips) Seed Oil*, Camellia Sinensis (Green Tea) Extract*. *Certified Organic

EWG Skin Deep Rating: not listed

Cost: 65g for $19.95

Comments: More good ingredients, and great sun protection. The face version has a somewhat lighter formula than the body version, and it doesn’t irritate sensitive facial skin. It’s too thick to wear under makeup, but that’s not what it’s designed for. Great for sensitive skin if you’re outdoors all day.

www.hellocharlie.com.au 9 ECO Logical Body Sunscreen SPF 30+

Ingredients: Active ingredients: Zinc Oxide 22%.

Inactive ingredients: Capric/Caprylic Triglyceride, Vitis Vinifera (Grape) Seed Oil, Silicon Dioxide, Cera Alba (Beeswax), Butyrospermum Parkii Seed (Shea) Butter, Euphorbia Antisyphilitica (Candelilla) Wax, Glyceryl Isostearate, Polyhydroxystearic Acid, Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba), Cucumis Sativus (Cucumber) Seed Extract, Rosa Canina (Rosehips) Seed Oil, Camellia Sinensis (Green Tea) Extract.

EWG Skin Deep Rating: not listed

Cost: 100g for $19.95

Comments: As with the baby sunscreen, these are great ingredients (although slightly different to the baby one), and a fabulous sunscreen. I use and recommend this.

www.hellocharlie.com.au 10 ECO Logical Baby Sunscreen SPF 30+

Ingredients: Active ingredients: Zinc Oxide 22%. Inactive ingredients: Capric/Caprylic Triglyceride, Vitis Vinifera (Grape) Seed Oil, Silicon Dioxide, Cera Alba (Beeswax), Butyrospermum Parkii Seed (Shea) Butter, Euphorbia Antisyphilitica (Candelilla) Wax, Glyceryl Isostearate, Polyhydroxystearic Acid, Simmondsia Chinensia (Jojoba), Cucumis Sativus (Cucumber) Seed Extract, Persea Gratissima (Avocado), Rosa Canina (Rosehips) Seed Oil, Carota Sativa (Carrot) Oil, Botswellia Carterii (Frankincense), Camella Sinensis (Green Tea) Leaf Extract.

EWG Skin Deep Rating: not listed

Cost: 100g for $19.95

Comments: Excellent ingredients, great sunscreen. A Hello Charlie bestseller, and rightly so.

www.hellocharlie.com.au 11 Eco Tan Natural Coconut Sunscreen SPF30 - Untinted

Ingredients: Active ingredient: Zinc Oxide 220mg/g; Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride; Vitis Vinifera (Grape) Seed Oil; Silica; Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Butter; Hydrophobically Modified Natural Polymer; Euphorbia Cerifera Cera (Plant Wax); Cera Alba (Beeswax); Parfum (Natural Coconut Fragrance); Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil; Tocopherol (Vitamin E); Carthamus Tinctorius Seed (Safflower) Oil; Cucumis Sativus Fruit (Cucumber) Extract; Vegetable Glycerin; Aqua; Camellia Sinensis Leaf Extract; Rosa Canina (Rosehip) Oil.

EWG Skin Deep Rating: not listed

Cost: 150ml for $29.95

Comments: This is another good sunscreen, good ingredients and a good amount of zinc for sun protection. I’d prefer not to have the coconut fragrance, but it is natural, and otherwise there’s nothing to argue with in this. I’ve used and like this.

www.hellocharlie.com.au 12 Eco by Sonya Natural Sunscreen

Ingredients: Actives: Zinc Oxide 220mg/g. Inactives: Rosa Canina (Rose Hip) Fruit Oil, Simmondsia Chinensis, (Jojoba) Seed Oil, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Vitis Vinifera (Grape) Seed Oil, Aqua, Tocopherol (Vitamin E), Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Butter, Euphorbia Cerifera (Candelilla) Cera, Glyceryl Isostearate, Polyhydroxystearic Acid, Carthamus Tinctorius (Safflower) Seed Oil, Cucumis Sativus (Cucumber) Fruit Extract, Glycerin, Camellia Sinensis (Green Tea) Leaf Extract, Silica, Cera Alba (Beeswax), Aluminum Starch Octenylsuccinate (naturally derived from Corn Starch)

EWG Skin Deep Rating: not listed

Cost: 150ml for $29.95

Comments: Brand new to the market, I haven’t had a chance to use this yet, but the ingredients are great.

www.hellocharlie.com.au 13 Graham’s Natural Sunclear Sunscreen SPF 30+

Ingredients: Microfine Zinc Oxide, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Rosehip Oil, Grape Seed Oil, Shea Butter, Sesame Seed Oil, Vitamin E, Vegetable Oils

EWG Skin Deep Rating: not listed

Cost: 50g for $14.95

Comments: The ingredients in this are great. Nothing to be concerned about here.

www.hellocharlie.com.au 14 Little Innoscents Natural Sunscreen SPF30+

Ingredients: Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Grape Vine (Vitis Vinifera) Seed Oil, Zinc Oxide, Silica, Shea (Butyrospermum Parkii) Butter, Aluminum Starch Octenylsuccinate Salt, Candelilla (Euphorbia Cerifera Cera) Wax, Bees (Cera Alba) Wax, Jojoba (Simmondsia Chinensis Seed) Oil, Tocopherol (vitamin E), Green Tea (Camellia Sinensis) Leaf Extract, Safflower (Carthamus Tinctorius) Seed Oil, Cucumber (Cucumis Sativus) Fruit Extract, Glycerin, Rosehip (Rosa Canina) Fruit Oil.

EWG Skin Deep Rating: not listed

Cost: 100g for $19.95

Comments: Another good list of ingredients with zinc oxide as broad spectrum protection. The aluminium starch octenysuccinate is the only one you might question, as there are contamination concerns. But it’s a low concern, and I’m happy with this sunscreen. This would probably score a 1 on EWG. I’ve used and recommend this.

www.hellocharlie.com.au 15 Little Urchin Natural Sunscreen

Ingredients: Active: Zinc Oxide. 22%. Inactive: Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Grape Vine (Vitis Vinifera) Seed Oil, Silica, Shea (Butyrospermum Parkii) Butter, Candelilla (Euphorbia Cerifera Cera) Wax, Bees (Cera Alba ) Wax, Jojoba (Simmondsia Chinensis Seed) Oil, Vitamin E (Tocopherol), Aqua, Green Tea (Camellia Sinensis) Leaf Extract, Aluminum Starch Octenylsuccinate, Safflower (Carthamus Tinctorius) Seed Oil, Cucumber (Cucumis Sativus) Fruit Extract, Glycerin, Rosehip (Rosa Canina) Fruit Oil.

EWG Skin Deep Rating: not listed

Cost: 100g for $24.95

Comments: The ingredients list is good. The aluminium starch octenysuccinate is the only one you might question, as there are contamination concerns. But it’s a low concern, and I’m still happy with this sunscreen. It would probably score a 1 on EWG. I’ve used this and like it. My children like the fact that it’s non greasy, and if that’s what it takes to get them to wear a natural sunscreen, I’m happy.

www.hellocharlie.com.au 16 Milk & Co Protect me+ SPF30+ Sunscreen

Ingredients: Zinc Oxide 220MG/G, Sorbic Acid, Phenoxyethanol, Benzyl Alcohol

EWG Skin Deep Rating: not listed

Cost: 150ml for $24.95

Comments: This isn’t a full ingredients listing, and Milk declined to provide me with the full list. Fair enough, they’re within their rights to do that under Australian law, but if they won’t disclose, we won’t buy. From the minimal ingredients that are disclosed, that benzyl alcohol is not recommended for infant skin, phenoxyethanol is an irritant and potential neurotoxin, and sorbic acid is a potential allergen. So I wouldn’t recommend this.

www.hellocharlie.com.au 17 Modere Sunscreen SPF 50+

Ingredients: Zinc Oxide, Methylene Bis- Benzotriazolyl Tetramethylbutylphenol, Bemotrizinol, 4-Methylbenzylidene Camphor, Phenoxyethanol, 1,2-Hexanediol, Caprylyl Glycol.

EWG Skin Deep Rating: 3 Moderate Hazard

Cost: 125mL for $19.90

Comments: There’s a couple of ingredients in this that I’m not super keen on. There’s phenoxyethanol, and there’s also 4- methylbenzylidene camphor. The EU suspects that this one is an endocrine disrupter, and EWG gives it a score of 7. There are better choices, so I’d pick something else.

www.hellocharlie.com.au 18 Moo Goo Natural Sunscreen SPF 40

Ingredients: Water, Zinc Oxide, Jojoba Oil, Galactoarabinan, Beeswax, Coco Caprylate, Sorbitan Olivate, Lecithin, Polyglyceryl-2 Dipolyhydroxystearate, Cetyl Phosphate, Polyglyceryl- 3 Polyricinoleate, Oleic Acid, Glycerin, Sodium Chloride (salt)

EWG Skin Deep Rating: not listed

Cost: 120g for $19.90

Comments: Another good ingredients list and a nice high percentage of zinc oxide for broad spectrum protection. Nothing to be concerned about here.

www.hellocharlie.com.au 19 Natural Instinct Natural Kids Sunscreen

Ingredients: Zinc Oxide 220 mg/g. Inactive ingredients: Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Vitis Vinifera (Grape seed) Seed Oil, Silica, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Butter, Aluminum Starch Octenylsuccinate, Euphorbia Cerifera Cera (Candelilla wax), Cera Alba, Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, Tocopherol (Vitamin E), Carthamus Tinctorius (safflower) Seed Oil, Cucumis Sativus (Cucumber) Fruit Extract, Glycerin, Water (Aqua), Camellia Sinensis Leaf (Green tea) Extract, Rosa Canina (Rosehip) Fruit Oil.

EWG Skin Deep Rating: not listed

Cost: 100g for $15.95

Comments: Another good ingredients list. The aluminium starch octenysuccinate is the only one you might question, as there are contamination concerns. But it’s a low concern, and I’m still happy with this sunscreen. It would probably score a 1 in EWG.

www.hellocharlie.com.au 20 Natural Instinct Invisible Natural Sunscreen

Ingredients: Zinc Oxide 220 mg/g. Inactive ingredients: Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Vitis Vinifera (Grape seed) Seed Oil, Silica, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Butter, Aluminum Starch Octenylsuccinate , Euphorbia Cerifera Cera (Candelilla wax), Cera Alba, Glyceryl Isostearate, Polyhydroxystearic acid, Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, Tocopherol (Vitamin E), Carthamus Tinctorius (Safflower) Seed Oil, Cucumis Sativus (Cucumber) Fruit Extract, Glycerin, Aqua, Camellia Sinensis Leaf (Green tea) Extract, Rosa Canina (Rosehip) Fruit Oil.

EWG Skin Deep Rating: not listed

Cost: 100g for $15.95

Comments: Again, a good ingredients list, with the same comments on the aluminium starch octenysuccinate as before. It is a low concern, and I’ve used and like this sunscreen. Doesn’t go on white, it’s much clearer than the others, hence the ‘invisible’ in the name. It would probably score a 1 in EWG.

www.hellocharlie.com.au 21 Natural Instinct Tinted Face Sunscreen

Ingredients: Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Vitis Vinifera (Grape seed) Seed Oil, Silica, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Butter, Aluminum Starch Octenylsuccinate , Euphorbia Cerifera Cera (Candelilla wax) , Cera Alba, Glyceryl Isostearate, Polyhydroxystearic acid, Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, Tocopherol (Vitamin E), Carthamus Tinctorius (Safflower) Seed Oil, Cucumis Sativus (Cucumber) Fruit Extract, Glycerin, Aqua, Camellia Sinensis Leaf (Green tea) Extract, Rosa Canina (Rosehip) Fruit Oil, CI 77492, CI 77491,CI 77499.

EWG Skin Deep Rating: 1 Low Hazard

Cost: 50g for $11.95

Comments: Another good natural sunscreen from Natural Instinct. This one is tinted so that you don’t have ‘ghost face’ when you’re at the beach all day! As I mentioned in the kids sunscreen for this brand, the aluminium starch octenysuccinate is the only ingredient that you might question, but this scores a 2 in EWG, and the whole product scores a 1.

www.hellocharlie.com.au 22 Simple As That Natural Sunscreen Lotion SPF30+

Ingredients: Active Ingredients: Zinc Oxide, Inactive Ingredients: Aqua, Isoamyl Laurate, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Cetearyl Alcohol, Fragrance, Glycerin, Hydroxypropyl Starch Phosphate, Sorbitan Stearate, Glyceryl Isostearate, Xanthan Gum, Rubus Idaeus Seed Oil, Cetearyl Glucoside, Polyhydroxystearic Acid, Sucrose Cocoate, Rosa Canina Fruit Oil, Carthamus Tinctorius Seed Oil, Cucumis Sativus Fruit Extract, Camellia Sinensis Leaf Extract

EWG Skin Deep Rating: not listed

Cost: 100ml for $29.95

Comments: A fairly new one to the Australian market. The ingredients are good (the fragrance is natural), and this performs really well. I’m impressed with this! It’s non greasy, and great to wear under makeup.

www.hellocharlie.com.au 23 Soleo Organics All Natural Sunscreen - SPF30+

EWG Skin Deep Rating: 1 Low Hazard

Cost: 150g for $39.95

Comments: Another good ingredients list. I personally find this one a little greasy, but it’s really moisturising and offers great sun protection. The straightforward UV Natural sunscreen version of this, and the sport version of this brand have very similar ingredients, and they’re just as good.

www.hellocharlie.com.au 31 Disclaimer: I started Hello Charlie because I was concerned about some of the products that I was using on myself and my children. I’m no chemist, I’m just a mum who does plenty of research on products before I use them and before I’ll stock them at Hello Charlie. Lots of customers and friends ask me about products that I’d recommend, and what they should be looking for when buying for their own families. These guides are the results of my research and reading. I’d love to hear from you if you’ve read differently, or have opinions or great products that you’d like to share. Teaching yourself about better choices for our families and our environment is a journey, and I’d love for you to join me on it! If you’d like to share this information with other parents, please feel free to do so. However, please bear in mind the time that it takes for me to do this research, and do the right thing by attributing this article back to me here at Hello Charlie. Thanks! Vanessa xx
