  • This Is England: Growing up in Thatcher's Britain
This is England: Growing Up in Thatcher’s Britain David Buckingham This essay is part of a larger project, Growing Up Modern: Childhood, Youth and Popular Culture Since 1945. More information about the project, and illustrated versions of all the essays can be found at: https://davidbuckingham.net/growing-up-modern/. In a pivotal scene in Shane Meadows’ 2006 film This is England, the skinhead Combo, recently released from prison, summons the other members of his erstwhile gang. In a blistering speech, he attempts to recruit them to the cause of the extreme right- wing political party, the National Front. Discovering that the youngest member, Shaun, had a father who was killed in the Falklands War, he explodes: That’s what this nation has been built on, proud men. Proud fucking warriors! Two thousand years this little tiny fucking island has been raped and pillaged, by people… two fucking world wars! Men have laid down their lives for this. For this… and for what? So people can stick their fucking flag in the ground and say yeah! This is England. And this is England, and this is England. As he says these last words, Combo gestures first to the ground, then to his heart and finally to his head. England, he claims, is not just a physical place, a country: it also lives in our hearts, and in our minds. In a later scene, when Combo brings his ‘troops’ (as he calls them) to attend a National Front meeting, it is clear how this resurgent idea of England is being taken up in the interests of violent racism.

News Release Wednesday 4 October 2017 NATIONAL PORTRAIT GALLERY ACQUIRES PHOTOGRAPHS OF JAKE BUGG AND VICKY McCLURE AFTER NOTTINGHAM STUDENTS CHAMPION LOCAL HEROES Generously supported by the Palley Family and in partnership with Nottingham Contemporary (from left): Carl Froch by Sam Holden, 2013 © www.samholdenagency.com; Jake Bugg by Julian Broad, 2013 © Julian Broad/ National Portrait Gallery, London Vicky McClure by Dieter Brandenburg, 2011 © Dieter Brandenburg; Viv Anderson by Bob Thomas, 1984 © Bob Thomas/National Portrait Gallery, London The National Portrait Gallery has acquired portraits of Nottingham icons Vicky McClure, Jake Bugg, Viv Anderson and Eric Irons after they were identified by young people in Clifton, Nottingham as figures missing from its Collections. The recommendations for acquiring the portraits were made by 22 GCSE photography students from Farnborough Academy, Clifton, Nottingham, who were invited to the Gallery in London to research its Collection of portraits of Nottingham-based personalities. The Gallery then acquired the four photographs which are displayed there for the first time alongside the students’ own work inspired by its Collections from today Wednesday 4 October 2017. The students were particularly keen for a portrait of the singer Jake Bugg as he attended the Farnborough Academy and his family still live in Clifton. The photograph of Bugg by Julian Broad is on display alongside a portrait of Line of Duty actor Vicky McClure by Dieter Brandenburg. McClure, who found fame in the films by Nottingham Director Shane Meadows’s A Room for Romeo Brass and This Is England, was born in Wollaton, attended Fernwood School and lives in Nottingham with the writer and director Johnny Owen.

THE DISASTER ARTIST PRELIMINARY PRESS NOTES World Premiere Toronto International Film Festival 2017 Publicity Contacts Catherine Simmonds Kate Parkes 416-583-5800 x 2003 416-583-5800 x 2009 [email protected] [email protected] TRT 98 MINS | RATED R | USA | ENGLISH | COLOR SYNOPSIS With The Disaster Artist, James Franco transforms the tragicomic true-story of aspiring filmmaker and infamous Hollywood outsider Tommy Wiseau—an artist whose passion was as sincere as his methods were questionable—into a celebration of friendship, artistic expression, and dreams pursued against insurmountable odds. Based on Greg Sestero’s best-selling tell-all about the making of Tommy’s cult- classic disasterpiece The Room (“The Greatest Bad Movie Ever Made”), The Disaster Artist is a hilarious and welcome reminder that there is more than one way to become a legend—and no limit to what you can achieve when you have absolutely no idea what you’re doing. ABOUT THE PRODUCTION In 2003, an independent filmmaker launched himself into the business out of nowhere with one of the worst movies ever made—The Room, a torrid romantic melodrama about a love triangle gone awry that was written, directed, and produced by Tommy Wiseau. This enigmatic figure with dyed-black hair, bearing an impenetrable foreign accent, became infamous in Hollywood after erecting a billboard on Highland Avenue promoting his bizarre $6 million vanity project. On the billboard was a close-up of Wiseau’s tough-guy demeanor, replete with a sunken eyelid and a misspelled tagline promising “Tennessee Williams-level drama.” Premiering on two screens in Southern California and abruptly disappearing after grossing a paltry $1800 in two weeks, The Room gained new life in the years to come through midnight screenings and word of mouth.
