The 2019 Sydney International champion hit winners on four match points before falling to Daniel Evans in singles. He returned in doubles and saved four more alongside Nick Kyrgios to clinch the tie 18-16 in a match tiebreak. • De Minaur is scheduled to face Rafael Nadal for the third time. The 20-year-old Aussie suffered identical 6-1 6-2 6-4 losses to Nadal in the third round at 2018 Wimbledon and the 2019 Australian Open. De Minaur bids to become the youngest player to defeat Nadal while he is World No. 1 since Kyrgios, 19, at 2014 Wimbledon. • Nadal, who fell to David Goffin on Friday, has not suffered consecutive losses since October 2016. The left- handed Spaniard lost to Grigor Dimitrov in the 2016 Beijing quarter-finals and Viktor Troicki in his opener at 2016 Shanghai five days later. Nadal has never suffered back-to-back losses in 206 weeks as the World No. 1. • Kyrgios and World No. 10 Roberto Bautista Agut are undefeated at the ATP Cup entering their match-up. Kyrgios is 3-0 in singles and 1-0 in doubles, while Bautista Agut has swept four matches and eight sets in singles. The 29th-ranked Kyrgios seeks his second Top-10 win at the ATP Cup and the 22nd of his career. • Kyrgios’ 56 aces in singles at the ATP Cup are the most among the 53 players who’ve competed in singles. Those free points are benefitting more than himself and his team. Every ace served at the ATP Cup equals a $100 donation from the ATP Tour and Tennis Australia to the Australian Red Cross bushfire disaster relief and recovery efforts. Through eight days of play, 1,226 aces have been served and $122,600 will be donated. • In a tweet on 2 January, Kyrgios pledged to personally donate $200 for every ace that he hits. Kyrgios’ personal donation is up to $11,800, which includes three aces from his dramatic doubles win in Thursday’s quarter-finals. • Neither Australia nor Spain has lost an ATP Cup doubles match. Pablo Carreno Busta is 4-0 for Team Spain. • During the first semi-final, World No. 5 Daniil Medvedev seeks his third straight head-to-head win over No. 2 Novak Djokovic. If Medvedev repeats his Monte-Carlo and Cincinnati wins, he will be the sixth player to sweep the Serbian three times in a row and the first since Nadal at Roland Garros, Montreal and the US Open in 2013. • Medvedev is one of 41 active players to have met Djokovic at least five times (2-3). All 41 have losing records. • Djokovic vs. Medvedev is the first match between Top-5 singles players at the ATP Cup. Another will occur in the final if Team Spain advances. Four of the Top 5 players competed across Sydney, Brisbane and Perth. • Serbian No. 2 Dusan Lajovic is 2-0 against Russian No. 2 Karen Khachanov with two 6-3 6-2 wins on clay. • Khachanov, Medvedev and Djokovic are each 4-0 in singles matches at the ATP Cup. Following singles, Khachanov and Medvedev (1-1 in doubles) are scheduled to meet Djokovic and Troicki (1-0 in doubles). • Three of the four captains in the semi-finals are former World No. 1s: Lleyton Hewitt of Australia (singles), Marat Safin of Russia (singles) and Nenad Zimonjic of Serbia (doubles). The odd man out is Spanish captain Francisco Roig, who earned career-high rankings of No. 60 in singles and No. 23 in doubles during the 1990s. Western & Southern Open Partners Embrace Unique 2020 Tournament CINCINNATI (Aug. 6, 2020) – Numerous Western & Southern Open partners will remain involved with the tournament in 2020 during it’s one-year staging at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York. Due to circumstances brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic, the Western & Southern Open will be held Aug. 20-28 at the same venue that will host the US Open beginning Aug. 31. The ATP Masters 1000 and WTA Premier 5 Western & Southern Open will be the first combined tournament hosting players from both circuits at a single venue since the tours suspended play in early March. While the venue will be different this year, a number of facets of the tournament will remain the same, starting with the name. Cincinnati-based Western & Southern Financial Group returns as title sponsor for a 19th year, marking the longest-running active naming rights relationship with a North American tennis tournament. The traditional Western & Southern backwall branding will be just one of the familiar aspects of the on-court presentation this year, particularly on the NTC’s Grandstand which will serve as the primary show court. As with 2019, a Porsche serve speed display and Rolex clock will be featured on the court. Player benches will once again be furnished by Mobisport and will be placed behind Cintas mats near drink coolers provided by BODYARMOR. Emirates will have net signage during the ATP Tour matches. LED screens will rotate sponsor signage on the side walls of the Grandstand while Motorola will be featured on LED boards on the side of the umpire’s chair.

TENNIS STUDY GUIDE HISTORY Mary Outerbridge is credited with bringing tennis to America in the mid-1870’s by introducing it to the Staten Island Cricket and Baseball Club. In 1880 the United States Lawn Tennis Association (USLTA) was established, Lawn was dropped from the name in the 1970’s and now go by (USTA). Tennis began as a lawn sport, but later clay, asphalt and concrete became more standard surfaces. The four most prestigious World tennis tournaments include: the U.S. Open, Australian Open, French Open, and Wimbledon . In 1988, tennis became an official medal sport. Tennis can be played year round, is low in cost, and needs only two or four players; it is also suitable for all age groups as well as both sexes. EQUIPMENT The only equipment needed to play tennis consists of a racket, a can of balls, court shoes and clothing that permits easy movement. The most important tip for beginners to remember is to find a racket with the right grip. The net hangs 42 inches high at each post and 36 inches high at the center. RULES The game starts when one person serves from anywhere behind the baseline to the right of the center mark and to the left of the doubles sideline. The server has two chances to serve legally into the diagonal service court. Failure to serve into the court or making a serving fault results in a point for the opponents. The same server continues to alternate serving courts until the game is finished, and then the opponent serves.

The ANZ Bank Tennis Development Program continues in 14 nations and the calendar of ITF W orld Junior Circuit events in the region provides opportunities for players to take their first steps on the international stage. Our ITF development officer Dan O‘Connell, assisted by an enthusiastic group of OTF development officers, has been instrumental in continuing the grassroots development of tennis. The various activities are covered in depth elsewhere in this report. After two earlier attempts to move forward with resurfacing the courts at the regional tennis centre in Lautoka, the project finally got underway in May 2008. The RTC is the focal point of tennis development in the Pacific, hosting our biggest junior events as well as being home to the ITF Regional Training Centre.
