Premised on the notion that mediated politics is now understood “in new ways by new voices” (Jones, 2005: 4), and appropriating what McNair (2003) calls a “chaos theory” of journalism sociology, this thesis explores how two different contemporary Australian political television programs (Sunrise and The Chaser’s War on Everything) are viewed, understood, and used by audiences. In analysing these programs from textual, industry and audience perspectives, this thesis argues that journalism has been largely thought about in overly simplistic binary terms which have failed to reflect the reality of audiences’ news consumption patterns. The findings of this thesis suggest that both ‘soft’ infotainment (Sunrise) and ‘frivolous’ satire (The Chaser’s War on Everything) are used by audiences in intricate ways as sources of political information, and thus these TV programs (and those like them) should be seen as legitimate and valuable forms of public knowledge production. -
Captain's Report
CAPTAIN’S REPORT This could become a rainfall report rather the Captain’s Report however rainfall does have a direct impact on our golf course from a play perspective as well as turf management. Cyclone Marcia certainly delivered the rainfall that was predicted with 199mm falling over the weekend. I have attached photographs of the Ladies 6th Hole (19th Hole) where there appears to be a river emerging from the front of the green, the 12th green approach with the water level lapping the edge of the green and the 18th creek where it cuts in front of the Ladies tee. Luckily we didn’t receive the associated winds so there was little damage to the vegetation around the golf course. Tree work does however continue, the Arborist and tree gang have been busy too carrying out work around the golf course with the removal of dead wood and unsafe trees. Unfortunately the Casuarina cunninghamiana, commonly known as She Oak, located on the right hand side of the 9th fairway 90 metres from the centre of the green, was badly damaged by lightning during the storm event in January and is one of the trees that has been lost. This will be replaced with another Casuarina to maintain the theme and some history. Interesting to note, Casuarina species were planted on the front nine as distance markers while Melaleuca leucadendra (Weeping Paperbark) were planted on the back nine as distance markers. Originally, the golf course was built for a Japanese company so the trees indicate ‘yardage’ … Single specimens are located 100yards (90 metres) from the centre of the green, where there are two trees they are located 150 yards (135 metres) from the centre of the green. -

Through case studies which showcase the various approaches to networked online news journalism, each media model is examined in terms of its own social, political and economic milieu, through a detailed look at well-known exemplars of each. The research is framed by the continuing expectation that journalism in democratic societies has a key role in ensuring citizens are informed and engaged with public affairs. The thesis finds that the use of the World Wide Web by the general population has impacted on the politics, technologies and tools of journalism in three main ways. First, it has enabled more people to share more information about more events and issues in the world than was possible before its general use. -

Natasha Exelby leaves Ten breakfast show Wake Up Date November 20, 2013 Megan Levy and Madeleine Heffernan Sydney Morning Herald Natasha Exelby is leaving her role as co-host of Network Ten's new breakfast television program Wake Up less than three weeks after the show's launch. Adam Boland, the director of morning television at the network, announced the 30-year-old's departure on Wednesday morning, saying that "chemistry is everything at breakfast and, right now, I don't think the balance is correct. It's up to producers to fix those things." He said Exelby would remain with Network Ten's News division, while Wake Up would continue to be hosted by Natarsha Belling and James Mathison. "I rate Natasha, Natarsha and James extremely highly individually, otherwise they wouldn't have been there in the first place," Boland said in a statement. "I also saw genuine spark during show rehearsals, but sometimes, that doesn't translate on air. That is nobody's fault, except mine. "Natasha is a dear friend. She is also genuinely talented and will remain a key part of Ten into the future." Exelby grew up near Kingaroy in Queensland, where parents Russell and Wendy Exelby still live. "She's been in touch," Mr Exelby said, when contacted by Fairfax Media. "She's fine, and keen to move on with her life." It is the latest blow for the television program, which only launched on November 4. Experts had predicted that Wake Up's arrival could be costly for the Seven and Nine shows, with Seven cementing its lead recently after parachuting in Samantha Armytage as Sunrise co-host. -

When we were down the hole one day, I remember tapping Brant on the shoulder and asking him if he thought we’d make the front page of The [Launceston] Examiner, our local paper. Then we get out and Oprah wants to interview us! Todd Russell1 I would like my life to settle down and to be normal again … Before we could go outside and there would be no cameras on us but now cameras follow Dad and everyone wants his autograph … And I wish the media would mind its business because they say things that are not true. Maddison Russell (Todd Russell’s daughter, from a writing competition)2 — Introduction By the time this article sees print, the events at Beaconsfield, Tasmania will have joined a backlog of similar news moments, largely unremembered by all but those who were personally affected by what happened there. Yet for fourteen days in mid-2006 this small mining town became, like so many places before it, ‘the network executive’s best friend’3 and an indication of a significant change in the way television news is reported and packaged in Australia. At 9.23 pm, on 25 April (Anzac Day), a rockfall at the Beaconsfield gold mine killed miner Larry Knight (his body was recovered two days later). On 30 April, two miners—Todd Russell and Brant Webb—were discovered to still be alive one kilometre underground.
