Born in 1673 in France, Saint Louis de Montfort is best known for his devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary. As a seminary student he lived among the very poor in Paris and preached about the Gospel to them. He was ordained as a priest in 1700 and worked in a parish even though he wished to travel to North America to become a missionary. He longed to become a preacher so he joined the Dominicans, who were known for their preaching and for their devotion to the Rosary. He founded groups dedicated to the Rosary and led retreats inspired by a devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary. Pope Clement XI appointed him as an Apostolic Missionary in France and he travelled throughout France preaching parish missions and leading retreats. He then founded the Company of Mary and the Daughters of Wisdom. During his travels he found time to write his well-known books: True Devotion to Mary, The Secret of Mary, and the Secret of the Rosary. His preaching was not always well received; in fact, he was poisoned on one occasion and his health deteriorated. He died at the age of only 43 while preaching his final mission. 1. For the vast majority of people fail to know this secret or else only know it superficially. If such a priest really understands this secret, he will say the Rosary each day and will encourage others to say it.

The word “rosary” means “rose garden,” “garland,” “bouquet of roses.” Pagans, whose ritual of devotion to their gods included crowning their idols with roses, turned their hatred for the true God to persecution of Christians. To repudiate their practice, many Christian virgins went to their martyrdom dressed in their finest and wearing a crown of roses which the brethren later gathered and used in their prayer. An old legend tells of a youth praying the Rosary; as each Hail Mary left his lips and Our Lady gathered them, they became rose buds which she then wove into a crown for her own head.

    The Rosary, The Prayer That Will Bind You to Me Forever The 61st Anniversary of Our Lady of America October is the month of the Holy Rosary and this year marks the 100th anniversary of the apparitions at Fatima. It was on the 13th of October, 1917, that Our Lady told the three shepherd children who she was: “I am the Lady of the Rosary.” In the previous months she had urged them to pray the rosary often and with great devotion to honor her Immaculate Heart and to pray for the conversion of sinners and for world peace. The October 13th visit was the last official visit at which time Our Lady performed the promised miracle so people would believe, the miracle of the sun. For some time the sun danced in the sky with a brilliance of color like an exploding rainbow, zigzagging and swirling like a gigantic fire-wheel before it plummeted toward earth and then returned to its proper place in the sky. Many thought it was the end of the world and fell on their knees in contrition, begging for God’s mercy. While the people watched the sun the children beheld the mysteries of the rosary in a tableaux in the sky, first the Holy Family in the Joyful mysteries, then Our Lord carrying His cross and Our Lady of Sorrows for the Sorrowful mysteries, but only Lucia saw Our Lady of Mount Carmel, holding out the brown scapular, for the glorious mysteries. This year also marks the 61st anniversary of the apparitions of Our Lady to Sister Mildred Mary Neuzil in which she identified herself, “I am Our Lady of America,” and called on America to be the nation dedicated to her purity.
