    Checklist of the Spider Wasps (Hymenoptera: Pompilidae) of British Columbia Scott Russell Spencer Entomological Collection Beaty Biodiversity Museum, UBC Vancouver, B.C. The family Pompilidae is a cosmopolitan group of some 5000 species of wasps which prey almost exclusively on spiders, giving rise to their common name - the spider wasps. While morphologically monotonous (Evans 1951b), these species range in size from a few millimetres long to among the largest of all hymenopterans; genus Pepsis, the tarantula hawks may reach up to 64 mm long in some tropical species (Vardy 2000). B.C.'s largest pompilid, Calopompilus pyrrhomelas, reaches a more modest body length of 19 mm among specimens held in our collection. In North America, pompilids are known primarily from hot, arid areas, although some species are known from the Yukon Territories and at least one species can overwinter above the snowline in the Colorado mountains (Evans 1997). In most species, the females hunt, attack, and paralyse spiders before laying one egg on (or more rarely, inside) the spider. Prey preferences in Pompilidae are generally based on size, but some groups are known to specialize, such as genus Ageniella on jumping spiders (Araneae: Salticidae) and Tachypompilus on wolf spiders (Araneae: Lycosidae) (Evans 1953). The paralysed host is then deposited in a burrow, which may have been appropriated from the spider, but is typically prepared before hunting from existing structures such as natural crevices, beetle tunnels, or cells belonging to other solitary wasps. While most pompilids follow this general pattern of behaviour, in the Nearctic region wasps of the genus Evagetes and the subfamily Ceropalinae exhibit cleptoparasitism (Evans 1953).

    “I want to tell you about an experience I recently had with a Canadian icon. As you may know, the masterwork of sculptor, Bill Reid, stands in the courtyard of the Canadian Embassy directly across Pennsylvania Avenue from the U.S. Capitol building in Washington. The Spirit of Haida Gwaii is a 6 meter long black bronze sculpture of a dugout canoe loaded with many of the creatures that figure prominently in Haida mythology – Raven, Grizzly Bear, Eagle, Wolf, Beaver, Frog, Mouse as well as several figures that shift between the human and animal worlds. A Shaman holds a staff upright and gazes deep into the voyage ahead. Tucked along one side and helping with the paddling is a small human figure the artist calls, the Ancient Reluctant Conscript. For three days, morning and night, I passed this spiritually luminous creation on my walk to and from the Washington Convention Center. I had long known of this sculpture, but had never seen it, and did not know it was here at the seat of overweening human empire, bearing witness to an entirely different way of being in the world. I was stunned … and spent increasing lengths of time in its presence as the days went by. “Presence” is the right word. By the last night it came to me again, full force: This commonwealth of life, this voyage of the great canoe is a sacred journey. Solidarity is the key. Right relationship is the guide. Economic adaptation that enhances life’s commonwealth and advances the sacred journey is our moral assignment and ethical responsibility.

Starr 1,* 1 Department of Life Sciences, University of the West Indies, St Augustine, Trinidad and Tobago; [email protected] 2 San Fernando East Secondary School, Pleasantville, Trinidad and Tobago * Correspondence: [email protected] Simple Summary: Both solitary and social wasps have a fully functional venom apparatus and can deliver painful stings, which they do in self-defense. However, solitary wasps sting in subduing prey, while social wasps do so in defense of the colony. The structure of the stinger is remarkably uniform across the large family that comprises both solitary and social species. The most notable source of variation is in the number and strength of barbs at the tips of the slender sting lancets that penetrate the wound in stinging. These are more numerous and robust in New World social species with very large colonies, so that in stinging human skin they often cannot be withdrawn, leading to sting autotomy, which is fatal to the wasp. This phenomenon is well-known from honey bees. Abstract: The physical features of the stinger are compared in 51 species of vespid wasps: 4 eumenines and zethines, 2 stenogastrines, 16 independent-founding polistines, 13 swarm-founding New World polistines, and 16 vespines. The overall structure of the stinger is remarkably uniform within the family.
