Piccadilly Books JULY 2018 So You Think You've Got It Bad? A Kid's Life in Ancient Egypt Chae Strathie, illustrated by Marisa Morea

A hilarious and fascinating look at what life was like for a child in ancient Egypt.

Description A kid's life in ancient Egypt might sound like fun with all the cool pyramids and glorious sunny weather, but actually it was rather tough! In this hilarious book, written by award-winning author Chae Strathie, children will learn exactly how difficult life really was, from dodging Deathstalker scorpions and cleaning up cow dung, to fetching water from the well, eating roast hedgehog and being slammed in the stocks for being naughty at school! Probably the first book about ancient Egypt that involves bubble wrap and skateboards!

About the Author Chae Strathie is an award-winning children's author and journalist who grew up in a tiny village surrounded by a forest in Scotland, which probably explains a lot. His first attempt at professional writing was creating a comic at the age of seven. He sold two copies and made a total of four pence. A regular at major book festivals, Chae has toured the length and breadth of the UK and visited schools as far afield as Romania, reading his stories, acting the goat and singing silly songs about worm ice cream and beard-growing. He lives by the sea in Fife with his wife, three annoying cats and a very old goldfish called Lazarus.

Marisa Morea is a freelance illustrator based in Madrid, Spain. She lived in Barcelona for a couple of years and she graduated in a MA Illustration at Eina School in Barcelona in 2009. After a few years working as an Art Director in several advertising agencies, Marisa decided to quit and try as a full-time illustrator. So far, she's worked with many international clients from the United States, Australia, UK, France and Singapore.

In her spare time, Marisa is an Asthanga yogi and a classic cinema lover. She also goes crazy for music and enjoys creating covers of her favourite songs on the guitar.

Nosy Crow JULY 2018 Spike: The Hedgehog Who Lost His Prickles Jeanne Willis, illustrated by arvis

Whoever heard of a hedgehog without prickles?

Description Spike, a little hedgehog, has always had impressive prickles. But one morning, after a particularly scary dream, he wakes up completely bare! Oh no! Feeling very embarrassed, he goes in search of something to cover himself, from a paper lampshade to a tea cup to a very stinky sock. But nothing stops the other animals giggling at him. Poor Spike! Then he discovers a big bunch of balloons, which takes him across the world and ends in a very satisfying POP! and a very prickly party.

About the Author Jeanne Willis wrote her first book when she was five - a slim volume about cats written in pencil and stitched together with a painfully blunt needle so that it looked like a 'real' book. After that, there was no turning back. Having been fired from her Saturday job - selling cowboy boots on the Kings Road - for chewing gum, and after a brief career as a reptile vet's assistant, she worked as a copywriter and had her first picture book published at the age of 21 (which she wrote whilst pretending to be busy creating adverts for cognac).

She has since written over 300 books and has won several awards, which are arranged in the attic where she works, along with her collection of caterpillars, pink-toed tarantula skins and live locusts. Jeanne has a keen interest in Natural History and has lost count of the number of species featured in her books, including everything from slugs to sloths. She is currently into corvids - especially Nosy Crows.

Jarvis is the illustrator of Poles Apart and I'm In Charge. He did lots of different jobs before creating his first children's book, including work as a bingo caller, a bouncy- painter, a record-sleeve designer and an animation director. He's always doodled characters, and thinks that everything he's done in the past has helped make him a better children's picture book illustrator and writer ... Maybe not the bingo calling...

Jarvis wants the books he creates to be very personal, and particularly loves the nature of children's books, what they can Price: $24.99 ISBN: 9781788002059 do and how they can be kept and loved as little treasures. The final, hilarious story in the whodunit comedy that will keep you guessing until the last page.

Description 'A funny, realistic teen crime caper. This book sings.' Jesse Andrews, author of ME AND EARL AND THE DYING GIRL (praise for TROUBLE IS A FRIEND OF MINE)

Now that Digby's back in town, he's plunged Zoe (and their Scooby Gang of friend/enemy/perfect rich girl Sloane, nerd- tastic genius Felix, and genuine good-guy, aw-shucks handsome Henry) back into the deep end on the hunt for his kidnapped sister. He's got a lead, but it involves doing a deal with the scion of a wildly rich, powerful family, not to mention committing treason. Now that Zoe and Digby are officially together, she's definitely up for whatever closure this new caper might offer, even though this mystery will come with a twist neither expected.

Description 'A funny, realistic teen crime caper. This book sings.' Jesse Andrews, author of Me and Earl and the Dying Girl (praise for Trouble is a Friend of Mine)

Now that Digby has left town, she's finally built a regular high school life for herself. She's dating Miles; she knows girls she considers friends; she's learning to enjoy being normal and semi-popular. Which of course is when Digby comes back: He's got a new lead on his missing sister and he needs Zoe's help. Frances Lincoln Children's JULY 2018 The Great Big Book of Families Mary Hoffman, illustrated by Ros Asquith

Celebrating the family in all its wonderful diversity.

Description What is a family? Once, it was said to be a father, mother, boy, girl, cat and dog living in a house with a garden. But as times have changed, families have changed too, and now there are almost as many kinds of families as colours of the rainbow - from a mum and dad or single parent to two mums or two dads, from a mixed-race family to children with different mums and dads, from families with a disabled member to those with a mum or dad in prison. Mary Hoffman takes a look through children's eyes at the wide varieties of family life: from homes, food, ways of celebrating, schools and holidays to getting around, jobs and housework, from extended families, languages and hobbies to pets and family trees - and she concludes that, for most people, their own family is the best one of all! With Ros Asquith's delightful pictures, this book takes a fresh, optimistic look at families of today.

Wide Eyed Editions JULY 2018 Child I Steve Tasane

An extraordinary novella with echoes of The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas and The Road; set in an otherworldly plain with hints of magical realism.

Description A group of undocumented children with letters for names, are stuck living in a refugee camp, with stories to tell but no papers to prove them. As they try to forge a new family amongst themselves, they also long to keep memories of their old identities alive.

Will they be heard and believed? And what will happen to them if they aren't?

About the Author I am the son of a refugee, but that is not the reason why I wrote Child I.

When I was a child I was a recipient of free school dinners, and charity bags full of toys and suchlike at Christmastime. We were a charity case and I had a foreign-sounding name - Tasane - and difficulty speaking English well. But in some ways, the worst thing of all, was that my father then deserted me and my three brothers, and my mother. We were a broken home. I hated being a 'broken' child.

I grew up intensely envious of my friends who had a father. I grew up feeling the same otherness that my father must have felt as a refugee arriving in the UK.

Child I is not my story. But it draws together the links between my own shattered upbringing and that of young refugee children growing up in today's crisis-defined world. Nothing has really changed. We just want to belong. We just want to not be hungry. We just want to be able to laugh and play. We want to be.

And that is why I wrote Child I.

Description Identical twins Sonja and Charlotte are musical prodigies with extraordinary powers. Born on All-Hallows-Eve, the girls could play music before they could walk. Soon, ominous Enforcers come after them, and Charlotte and Sonja must embark on a perilous journey through enchanted lands in hopes of unlocking the secrets of their mysterious past.

'Charming . . . The lavishly illustrated fable of twin orphans growing up in a travelling circus in what Malouf calls a 'futuristic Dickensian world' was inspired by personal touchstones ranging from Charlotte Brontë to August Sander to her superstitious grandmother who believed in fortune-telling, and reflects Malouf's distinctive sense of style, which seems vaguely late Victorian but ultimately unmoored to a time or place.'
